I think that the average person looking into going the trike route for increased exercise will really appreciate this video. I myself am considering an e assistance trike not to make the ride any easier, but I would like to travel a lot farther from home and also a lot more time on my trike. Again Thank You for trying to give the people looking into purchasing a trike a video that I think will help them out greatly.
The whole video was great! But what I thought was the absolute best part was the ending. A trike helps you be able to get back out and have fun, and be able to keep you active and strong. I had knee replacement surgeries last year. One of my goals of therapy was to be able to ride a bicycle again. My husband ordered a quad, I ordered and am now riding a trike. We both have opted to get power assist. I didn't know it when I ordered it, but Wow!, what a game changer that has made for me! I am so much safer with a trike over a bike. I am out riding and strengthening my legs and when I need some help with inclines I have it and that makes the ride so much more enjoyable. The price I feel is definitely worth it and I am going to get my money's worth! :)
You did a great job describing why these trikes cost more than a traditional bike. Everything was spot on. Especially pointing out the difference in quantities between trikes and bicycles. There is a big difference between making thousands of a product a year versus millions a year. If you divide the cost of the engineer's design, for example, by a few thousand trikes and add it to the cost of the product it will cost noticeably more than if you spread it out across millions of trikes. That being said, I still can't bring myself to buy a trike for the price of a used car...I'm just too much of a cheapskate. Maybe I'm just making excuses to start another project and build my own. 😅
Thank for the explanation. I knew about the lack of economics of scale, but I did not know about every type of trike needed special machinery. Thank God I have a handy general bike mechanic only 500 meters/ 550 yards from my house. Who can fix my trikes, dispite not being trained for trikes.
I more thing buyers of trikes need to know is that they arent as easy to transport like bikes are....plus you can't take them on a bus or train and they have to be disassembled and boxed to go on a plane or boxed and shipped by ground...and if e assist they have even more issues to deal with to travel with.

I'm getting an XLbike box from shipbikes that's 72x14x32 to box up my disassembled gekko 26 to take on plane to Seattle with my gear and folding burley trailer to do the ACA pacific coast route. Wanted to take amtrak but bike box can't be heavier then 50lbs.
In the Netherlands we got a whole bunch more dead cyclist last year. Mainly old people falling off their e-bikes. They ride more often and longer distances at a higher age. It wouldn't be a bad idea for them get a recumbent trike instead of a funny helmet that will only do more harm than good. But recumbents never got popular. First they are expensive. I won't even mention trikes with e-assist! And we may be bicycle country number one in the world, but the Dutch bare also very conservative when it comes to cycling. There is a Dutch saying. "Act normal, then you are crazy enough". That is different in the USA. The typical American wants to stand out from the crowd, to be special. Where the american cyclist wears bright colors, the Dutch show up in gray and brown sweaters. So it is almost impossible to promote recumbent trikes for old folks as a 'safety bike' on which you can tour all day. Maybe it would help if they could buy one for something like €700 locally? The problem is you need to sell a lot to have any profit. And that is why you only find expensive models and only in recumbent bike shops.
I just bought the cheapest Trike I could find here in Canada. What a laugh when you say $1500.00😝😝😝😝 The cheapest trike on the market here in Canada is the Performer JC70 and not at the internet list price of US$1,965. That happens to be FOB Tiawan. The actual price was $3326.00 Canadian from Renu Cycle in Leduc Alberta. Now he did have a sale on in February and a discount if you where willing to put it together yourself. Feb sale $500 off. Assemble it yourself for a further saving of $200. And add on that miserable GST tax we have and the total I paid was $2730.00 Now mind you the bike is a Racing Trike so I am going to really enjoy that but it has zero suspension, it doesn't fold and I am 72 years old so I will need some helpers added to get out of the thing. But that is the cheapest one can get a Trike in Canada.
Now that I am a couple of months into riding my Performer JC 70 My GetUps are getting really good. It has become a lot easier getting out of the trike. Good exercise.
There are many, most of the ones that have good gearing or a motor, and that is comfortable on longer rides. Like the Catrike 559 and Dumont, or the Terratrike Gran Tourismo and the ICE Adventure, just a few that would work for touring.
6:27 I am convinced that the traditional bike seat is bad for a mans goodies - can you imagine a 125 lb. trunk resting on (crushing) the arteries that supply blood to the male organ. A recumbent bike seat is the only alternative.
In reality one can buy a superb trike in the US for $3-4000. Catrike and others fall into that range. The cost is truly irrelevant ! Play golf and join a club for $10k per year. Play once a week for $75 and spend $4000 every year….year after year. Spend the money on a quality trike once and get many years of an incredibly useful exercise. It doesn’t cost me $50-100 to take my trike out for a ride. One can shop for a used trike on many sites online and eventually find one at a fair resale price. As far as transporting them…..I have a great Hitchrider rack on the back of my Toyota …it cost a few hundred bucks and I load my trike on it in 30 seconds. You can also slide them into any SUV or get a folding trike go in any sedan. Cost is really not a deterrent unless you buy one and never use it.
