I have the even older non Ai 55/1.2 and got decent results with it on the D800. If you know its limits, you can still produce photos of a special character. I am Olympus shooter since a few years, but looking for a used Z6 to give my vintage Nikkor collection a new life.
Your vids are a beacon of light each and every time... You cheer me up. Nice review. The Z lens seems to outperform the F-AIS. Which was to be expected, judging the size differences (and both being Nikon). The new lens definitely has a harder contrast. Which I like a lot. I wish I one time could watch the milky way, as it is 'normal' to you. I always see clouds, or an orange haze, when looking up.
Why does nobody ever mention that Nikon Z lenses are horrendously bigger than their F-AIS counterparts. Why can't Nikon make "normal" sized Z lenses? Nikon Z cameras are not that much bigger than a 35mm Nikon SLR.
Yes, it seems the compromise Nikon have made to make next generation affordable high quality lenses (auto focus or manual focus) is size. I suspect its easier and less expensive to make lenses larger to get the quality. That's why my preference is having 2 35mm camera systems, Nikon F/Z and Leica M.
Yes, the S lenses eschew size considerations for the sake of quality but don't forget the compact 40mm and 28mm primes on the Z - cheap and still very good quality! I have the 24-50mm Z too. It doesn't compare to the larger primes but I managed to pick one up second hand recently very cheaply and it's still definitely worth it.
I do love the 50mm 1.2 Ais. Small, light, butter focus ring, metal construction, monster bokeh, what else you need. It is a gem.
👍
I just have that 50 mm F 1.2 ai-s lens and I am just starting to use it. I appreciate your excellent presentation and thank you very much. RS. Canada
Glad it was helpful!

The 55mm f1.2 vintage AI or AIS is on my shopping list also.

If you have an issue with the loose control ring, try a rubber band and that is how I tame it to control +/-EV.
Good suggestion

I like the Z 50 1.2 but I don’t think it is 4x better if you go as a ROI
👍
I love the Z lens, but it is not 4x better than the vintage IMO
It is if you are a pixelpeeper.
