I installed the SmittyBuilt version on my TJ. Very similar design. I used large black zip ties from Harbor Freight instead of the hose clamps .They hold well, there are no sharp edges, and the black looks good without having to worry about electric tape goo from the heat of the sun.
Haha that's exactly right. Sadly that seems to be a common theme on TJs. That slight change halfway through production must be too subtle for manufacturers
Nice video. I've been thinking about getting one of these, and you answered all of my questions and more. Now I'll buy one with confidence. Thank you for doing it and the close ups.
@@justinfaloon9639 no problem! Always love to hear the videos are helping people and honestly that is one of better bang for your buck upgrades I've done. I always use it and anything that gets you more storage in a TJ is good.
@WheelinWithWally the extra storage is nice and will be useful, but I have my CB and switch box on the left side of the dash. I need a spot for my GMRS radio. I can mount it nicely and out of sight more up top. "I think" lol.
@@justinfaloon9639 that's my plan in my gladiator with the over head molle panel I just installed in it. Should work nicely. Check out gear keeper on Amazon to hold your mic. It's self retracting
@WheelinWithWally good call. I tried a retractable in my last TJ with my CB mounted in the middle of my dash and I didn't like it. The radio being mounted above would be a lot better for a retractable. No having to reach forward with a big snap back. Great call. Consider your idea stolen, lol.
I bought this same one and I took a knife for a slot for hose clamp to attach to roll bar and hide hose clamp. And ion the front I did the reverse like you did but it does stick up higher. I will reinstall the front like yours.👍. I did trim the 1 inch returns on the roll bar but I just used snips to cut it. Can’t wait to see what you got for rear tailgate.
I bought something similar from Molle Platform Solutions a few years ago for my JK. My lazy ass has yet to install it, lol. Looking forward to your upcoming adventure! I drive to Colorado and Utah every year from Indiana. Horrible drive but a great trip!
Haha I understand that! Sometimes I collect parts for awhile and then get motivated months later to finally dive into it. Yeah the trip is fantastic but driving two 12 hour days in row in that TJ is brutal. It also doesn't help that the whole trip is also driving. I think new seats are on my to do list when I get back.
@@richardmetz honestly it's pretty good. I've never had anything fall off while on a trail. I don't have a ton of weight in them but the small duffle bag I use for camera gear gets a little heavy and even it stays up there.

I didn't think about getting some large zip ties. That's not a bad idea!
One can't have too much storage in a TJ. When mislead by manufacturers we must adapt and overcome. 👍🏻

I’ve been looking online but I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right part. I need the tie down that goes in the center of the windshield.

Nice well done video
Thank you!
hey man , Nice video, I'm thinking about getting this same one, but how strong is that velcro? , your things don't fall down while offroading?

@@WheelinWithWally thanks man 👌
@@richardmetz no problem!
i assume its no problem, but can you still put the soft top with that insert on without any modifications?
Yeah no problem at all
@@WheelinWithWally awesome! Thanks! I'm thinking of making one.
Is there any space available above the plate after installation?do you know is the install can be modified to create more space above the plate?
There is a little bit of space above it yes but not a whole lot. I'm not sure you could change much to get more space.
@@WheelinWithWally thank you
