I wouldn’t mind that, if the singing actually helped tell the story and wasn’t just there for no reason….
I still like the concept it just wasnt done well.
In my opinion, this film didn't need a sequel, much less being a musical. I'll be surprised if it does well at the box office

This one isn't surprising; Joker wasn't very good.
I somewhat agree. I loved dune part 2 and D&W and the wild robot and these were my most anticipated films this year. But films like this or megalopolis whether I was excited for them or not which I wasn’t really aren’t doing well unfortunately. Of course furiousa was great but didn’t do well and transformers one I thought would suck but it’s fantastic but it’s still struggling. So it’s a mish mosh year as far as that goes for me personally.
i think you mean "wild robot" substance has only made 11 million in its first week. wild robot opened at 53 mill...big difference.
Joker wasnt a very good movie, but it was buoyed by Joaquin. The only good bits were ripped off from Scorcese. This movie was just a complete mess and misuse of Lady Gaga lol
The Substance is my current pick for best film of the year. It won't win Oscars probably, cause those old men tend to hate gore, but I hope I'm wrong.

I was so confused in the run up to release about why the director and cast were so set on trying to pretend it wasn't a musical. If you didn't want it to be a musical, why did you make it a musical?!?

Phillips is not a great director. There's no reason to think he could pull this off. At least that's what I thought going into the cinema. I was right!

The Hangover 2 wasn't that bad. I loved the monk, the monkey, Stu having s*x with a trans person...
I never ever let critical and audience reception determine if I'm going to see a movie. But after how much I loved the first Joker, and after that I heard this movie takes place in a courtroom mixed in with musical numbers that don't even feel passionate about being musical numbers, this sequel just sounds like a huge mistake and I won't be paying to watch this in a theater at all. I'll catch it on HBOMax sometime when it is free.
If I waste money it ruins my day and I won't pay to see this when the trailers were so boring
Go watch Anora, The Brutalist, The Fall or the Subtance instead. Much better films worth your time and money

Interesting how Phoenix's main competition during the 2019/2020 award season was Adam Driver as Driver has been in so many duds lately and now joins Phoenix as the stars of the two biggest turds of 2024.
I really really enjoyed this movie a lot, but I can see why other people wouldn't. It didn't really feel aimless to me. I thought Gaga was given enough to do but don't really wanna discuss here without spoiling her part of the story. Definitely agree with the take overall now that this likely wont be in Best Picture. I genuinely think Gaga could still get in the supporting category, especially if some critics groups pull her up:

Other than Joaquin Phoenix the only other actor I can think of reprising their oscar winning role is Anthony Hopkins
Bing Crosby reprised his Oscar winning Father O’Malley from GOING MY WAY for the sequel THE BELLS OF ST. MARY a year later.
Lecter as played by Hopkins is closer to caricature than real life. I prefer Brian Cox in the role.
I should have looked down because I just wrote a whole rant about the "Hannibal" movie as someone who the "Hannibal" novel is one of my favorite novels of all time.

Lady Gaga is basically the only reason I've been waiting for this movie to come out, and it's sucn a disappointment we don't have that much of her in it. Especially given the fact that the trailer and the whole marketing campaign focused on both of them as lead characters. Planning to see it this weekend anyway. Hope it will be good anyway, but the chances are low now.

I am so bummed at the amount of bad reviews I've seen. I was so looking forward to this movie. I'll still see it, but with much lower expectations
Honestly the negative reviews are odd to me because it is a very enjoyable movie. It's bonkers and crazy but I think that is the point. It feels like bandwagon hate to me. It is well crafted and a big swing but I think a lot of people just are not going to "get it"

I agree with Ryan. Came out of the cinema puzzled by the negative reviews - I thought it was very well crafted and acted. It goes to deeper aspects when discussing Fleck v. Joker and the musical sequences surface the conflict IMO
I know a lot of people compared Lady GaGa to Madonna, especially at the start of her career. There’s one thing GaGa definitely has over Madonna, though: at least she can act. Even in the worst movies she’s in, you can tell she’s at least trying. Madonna’s best acting in her career seems to be more accidental than anything.
They both made duds tho but at least Madonna doesn't destroy beloved IPs

One, from what I'm reading, the problems with Harley's character in this aren't GaGa's fault, but more the script not really giving her a lot to work with. GaGa is a good actress, but even the greats can't do much if the scripts and direction they're given don't help them.
Two, I read somewhere that, if Batman and Robin had been a hit, Joel Schumacher's intended follow-up would've included Madonna as Harley Quinn. Not sure how true that would've been, but it's something to think about!

@@gabbyb7347 that’s a lot of blame to put on one actor, though. GaGa didn’t write her dialogue or her scenes, she just acted them as she was told. Saying GaGa will be known as an IP killer for her performance in this is like blaming Arnold Schwarzenegger for the failure of Batman and Robin. Yea, his performance as Mr. Freeze was criticized, what with the ice puns and all, but he didn’t write that dialogue. He just acted as he was told. Same with GaGa here.
Also, on the point that all of Madonna’s movies were original, non-IP stuff: she was in the Dick Tracy movie (which was hyped up as a major upcoming blockbuster, but didn’t do well in the end and is barely remembered today) and Die Another Day (which is often considered the worst James Bond movie, and caused that franchise to need a reboot afterwards). Madonna wasn’t the blame for either of those either, but even still.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember at some of the first test screenings - people were saying lee was in it too much and was the main character more than joker was. I imagine they decided to cut some of her scenes but went overboard! I'm really disappointed this movie isn't going to be good , been looking forward to it for years!
This is truly the Folly of Two.
More than a disappointing sequel, to me is a case of a wholly unnecessary one. Although the presence of Lady Gaga made me believe in the possibility of an interesting new story, the idea that a sequel was an error never left me.
I think fans wanted more than Harley. Perhaps a play on Bruce Wayne or even another villain. The trailer does nothing for me and, I suspect, won't do much for most. Loved the first one - a true work of art. Derivative in the best way.

Hearing that Gaga isn't in it much and is basically but on the backburner for most of it is really disappointing. Like you said you have Lady Gaga and they don't utilize her and her talents is inexcusable. Also I love musicals but this sounds more like Nine than Chicago. I hope Gaga has at least one musical showstopper. I guess Ill see.
The fact that it is a dark story does not mean it cannot be a good musical with well blended music parts. Take Dancer in the dark for example.
Or Hadestown.
Lady Gaga is not a good actress, i'm sorry. she tries to lose herself in her roles, but i've never been blown away by a performance. in all the clips i've seen of her in the film, she's not embodying anything remotely Harley . Can't hold a candle to Margot ... AN ACTUALLY GOOD CRAZY TALENTED ACTRESS. she was a bad choice.

Phillips acknowledges that characters like Joker have consequence, because you do have the followers who aren’t just cosplaying for fun, like Lee, but will seriously misunderstood and “take the joke too far” so to speak. Playing a “Joker” creates a Joker. You become part of a cycle of violence and unrest. And it’s not cool. You don’t go out a legend, or a hero. You’re forgotten on a cold floor. So. Don’t admire people like this. Don’t act like this. That’s why Phillips doesn’t even really show the new Joker. He doesn’t want to give the kid “a moment” or treat him as special or important. He’s not the heir but the conclusion. A period rather than an exclamation point. "As a man, I'm flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed; but as a symbol...as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting." - Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Instead of saying, "I'm like, 'How did we...'", just say it from the outset. "How did we..."
This feels like a joke on the audience. Right? When part 1 came out they were all “it’s not a glorification of violence and mental health it’s not a rally cry for incels” but it was both of those things. So maybe Phoenix and Phillips said “lets just take the money and stick it to em”
Maybe they’re saving the all of Gaga’s scenes for the Harley Quin spin off movie? 😂

I did not like Joker. I didn't like it when I saw it opening weekend. I even gave it another chance and watched it at home. That movie just does not work for me. The only interest I had in this sequel was the appearance of Gaga and the chance to give a fresh take on Harley. I am sad to hear Gaga isn't given enough to do here.
I am waiting for a Gaga to be cast as Liza Minnelli and or Judy Garland so she can win her Oscar. A dual Liza/Judy role would be even better where she is playing mother and daughter across time in some sort of musical/drama hybrid. Liza's memoir is coming in the next few years so an adaptation could be ripe.
Overall, 2024 has been such a let down for me with movies. So far, Dune 2 is my favorite movie of the year.
Amazing how consistent all these RUclips reviews are on this movie. I did not care for the first and will not see this sequel.
For me personally I usually find Joaquin as an actor to be overwrought.
He plays a great villain though (gladiator) - him and that joffrey guy from GoT have to be 2 of the easiest to despise villians of all time.
He's an actor that's very dependent on his collaborating director to bring put the best in him.
I think his best performance was as Freddie Quell in 'The Master'.
I always have flash backs of Joaquin playing the main villain 🦹♀️ in Gladiator,he’s an outstanding talent.❤
I'm one of those people, who liked the first Joker, but I always disagreed with the idea of making Joker seem a musical, which was an unnecessary thing. So, if you feel like watching a movie at cinema, don't invest your money on Joker: Folie á Deux.
Anthony Hopkins won best actor for playing Hannibal Lecter, and he reprised that role twice.

I said either you gonna love it or hate it. I thought they would have great chemistry because Gaga and Joaquin are both quirky and off beat. Great accessment!
From now on, 'It's a Joker 2' will become accepted shorthanded for any awful film.

It's uneven, and some dialogue are too simplistic, the structure is not perfect. But I still admired it. It's bold and emotional. Fillips never plays it safe here. This movie, like the first one, manages to wake sth primal in you: primal anger and primal lust. I truly believe it will have a cult following.
Is it so difficult to learn how to pronounce a French title?
A few musical numbers would’ve been great , but there were more in the first 30min than they should’ve had in the whole film!!

I really liked it. It was different in it own way and a good way.
I think it's a good way to create a new level of the character away from the same of the 1st part or it would be a repeat.
The music and songs are mainly the crazy sound in his head and I see it a really new way to show his mental issues.

So sad to hear this about Joker: Folie a Deux. I was really looking forward to Lady Gaga's performance. Not sure how I feel about this being a musical. It seems very discordant with the original Joker's vision. I'll have to go see it just to feel the jarring confusion at the director's choices.
And here I am still sitting here 5 years later wondering how the first film made so much money because it was super mediocre.

Y'all I'm sorry....Actually I'm not. The first Joker was not good. I get that it's its own story/universe....But not good....Nominations does not a great film make. We all know the academy is bogus for their nominations and snubs half the time....And admit it- we all knew from the moment they announced this was a musical (and then sort of retracted that...) we knew this would not be good....This is my shocked face:🙂
I really didn’t even care for the first Joker that much, and this being such a drastic departure from that movie’s more grounded, gritty tone (one of the few things I thought really worked about that movie, along with Phoenix’ performance) is a horrible movie..

@MidnightIsolde I think more was done with her. In this film, she didn't really care about Joker. She cared about the image and what he represented. When he said that would be no more, she was done, and walked out on him.
So everybody hates this film, and from the dry explanation of what happens, I hated it too! But then this one guy gave it a review that totally changed my interpretation. Folie A Deux has meaning on multiple layers. Remember the 1st movie? Things werent as they seem? The choices everybody thinks are dumb choice were purposeful and are red herrings. The movie is only being criticized as a musical and court room film with a crappy final act. But what if thats just a camoflauge? What if the film ONLY works subliminally, and has NO meaning on the surface. The courtroom and musical dynamic isnt suppose to be a rich courtroom and musical film its just a tool to communicate symbolically. Think....What is the subliminal message? If the movie is suppose to be shit on the surface, what is the point underneath? They wasted Lady Gaga, do you have a hint as to why they used her like they did and how it correlates with the subliminal meaning and the very title of the film?

In her music and her acting, Lady Gaga always seems to be a caricature of the role she’s playing. In the Harlequine album, she’s giving us a cartoon version of jazz. In Hause of Gucci, she gave us a cartoon version of the character. We can all see how much work she puts in. We can all see how passionate she is about her work. And she’s been successful beyond measure. So clearly her strategy is working. I just don’t ever connect with her work because of how forced and cartoonish it always feels.
Maybe its a YOU problem she is an incredible once in a generation talent

She is far better than mid i mean she is no meryl streep but she can ACT n had potential here. why are u mad at him for giving her props n I promise you he is not the only one, many people loved her in this film n were disappointed by how todd was incapable of writing a complex woman.
