- I think we are many who like paeonies - especially for romantic gardens and cottage gardens. It’s such a great and easy plant. Today I show you how I grow them. I’m talking about paeonies as companion plants in the borders with roses and perennials and show how we plant tubers in the autumn.
I’m showing:
Paeonia ‘Kansas’
Paeonia ‘Edulis Superba’
Rose de Rescht
Paeonia ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’
Paeonia ‘Nippon Beauty’
Paeonia ‘Miss America’
Paeonia ‘Honey Gold’
Paeonia ‘Bowl of beauty’
Pimpinella rosea
Paeonia suffruticosa
Paeonia lutea
Paeonia ‘Do Tell’
Paeonia ‘White Charm’
Paeonia ‘Peter Brand’
Paeonia ‘Buckeye Belle’
Paeonia ‘Sarah Bernhardt'
My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

I could listen to you talk about flowers for hours
I love how your face is permanently in smile-mode! Makes me so happy and you’re a breath of fresh air, Claus! Thank you for showing us all the beauty!!
I can only imagine the joy, the colors, the textures and the scent strolling through Claus' garden!
I too am a lover of peonies. I have four that are the same variety as yours. To me a peony and a rose are a match made in heaven. Throw in a clematis and the three flowers together are a real showstopper. I also have a love of lilies and daylilies. I love your garden Claus. It is absolutely beautiful. God bless
You have the most soothing and delightful voice. Your love and passion for your garden vibrates straight from your heart. Thank you for sharing the delight and wonderment of nature and its beauty.
I'm so glad iv found you.. you make me so happy... I could watch you all day... Debra from England x
The peonies are gorgeous and beautiful, your garden is stunning…it’s like heaven 😍💐🌸
Claus, such a wonderful and beautiful assortment of peonies. 😍
I love the pinks of roses and peonies. Stunning, Claus 🌸💕🌸
What a beautiful garden. Just a joy to see such beautiful colors.
Your garden is stunning, I am going to try Peonies this year, love the ‘Nippon Beauty’.
Claus! I wish I was in your magnificent garden! Incredible Beauty. I would be in that garden every minute of Summer sunlight, since Denmark Summers have only a few hours of darkness a night one of my favorite things about your country ❤️☀️☀️☀️
English garden style is the best!!!
Dreaming about the border like this one😍
Laura from Garden Answer was correct - You & your gardens are awesome.
I live in Canada (zone 3) and we have to plant our paeonies a little deeper as the winter temps can plummet to -35C and colder. They have glorious blooms that get so heavy they topple over. I often leave the blooms on the plant too long. The pink variety I grow gets sun bleached then finally shed their petals. It is quite a clean up.
Stunning. Thank you for naming the peonies Claus. You have convinced me to buy some 😊.
Such an interesting collection of peonies. They are my all time favorites 😍
Beautiful! I am very happy that you put the names up for the varieties at the end. I inherited a peony when I moved to my house 25 years ago. It is thriving and puts out a tremendous number of blooms. I never knew the variety. Now I think it’s the Sarah Bernhardt. Thank you for solving the mystery for me.
Lovely😍😍😍
Your garden is so pretty. Thanks for sharing it Claus.
Thanks for sharing your experiencie! I didn't know that peonies tuber's have to be planted 2 cm depth ☺️ greetings from Chile!
BEAUTIFUL Claus! I love Bowl Of Beauty! ❤ Linda in Vancouver 🇨🇦
I do agree Claus, you always look so happy showing and sharing your garden and then giving instructions of planting and caring. It is such a pleasure to watch and your helping gardeners, it was nice of you mentioning them, giving them credit as all this cannot be managed by one person. May you be blessed for many years working and enjoying all the various plants.
So beautiful! Your garden is amazing Claus.

What a magnificent show of Peonies. Each one is beautiful in its own right, you couldn't choose a favourite among them. I love the way you have tucked them inside borders and that they still shine!
I cant imagine how it feels like living in a such beautiful and amazing place surrounded by garden. You have an amazing garden and you are a grate advisor. Thank you
I bought over 12 and planted them upside down only 2 survived. 😂 Clare Austin , Davids daughter sells specialty Peonies. They cost a lot some , but live for up to 100 years old .
My favorite flower 🌸 🙌🏻
Glorious garden thank you for sharing
You have a very beautiful garden 🌼 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much 😊
cheers me up no end to watch this gentleman and his delightful garden
I’ll take one of each variety! They are beautiful and one of our most favorites but we haven’t had much luck. Thank you for explaining how far you bury the tubers. That explains why we only had leaves and no flowers. After seeing your gardens and all the varieties, my husband and I are inspired. Thank you so much for sharing with us 💕
I am jealous with ur garden😍
A man of few words but many beautiful flowers….🥰
Wow beautiful garden 🌷👌
Your peony garden is stunning. Peonies are my favorite flower.

Your garden is absolutely beautiful. I enjoy watching your videos. Do you have a video on planting peonies in pots? I planted some in beautiful Ernst three years ago and they haven’t bloom yet. Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾
Beautiful flowers....I love it..😙😙😙
I like that the matching shirt to today's theme flower! Nice touch.
How beautiful 😍🌸🌷🌳❤️🙏🏻
Another great episode Claus. I'm amazed at how much information you pack into a short video without sounding rushed or unclear . Thanks for showing the footage from autumn. Seeing the simple, underlying structure of the beds really helped me to understand the layers of complexity the mixed planting brings. Hello Birthe.
Lovely and Lovely....
Thank you so much for sharing your collections of Beautiful Flowers....
Have a wonderful week...Claus Dalby.
I love love love the cottage boarder!! What joy you must feel in the beautiful gardens you have!! 💕💕

Your Arden is lovely. I’m enjoying your videos very much.
Dear Claus! Such a beautiful display. I hope you might try to source 'Red Charm'.. a stunning deep red bomb type.. truly a wonder!! Thank you so much for sharing your stunning gardens with us.
Beautiful peonies, I have a really old one that was my grandfathers , I could. Listen to you all day 😊
Just love peonies. Your garden is magnificent. This video makes me want to plant more and more.
One question for you though, how much sun do the tree peonies need? Do they need to be on the edge of the woodland border or can they handle a bit more shade?
Your garden is so beautiful it depresses me! One could never hope to attain such splendour. 😥
I love paeonies! They always bloomed here in Southern Ontario on June 12, my parents’ wedding anniversary❤️
So beautiful.
I grew up in Regina Saskatchewan Canada and the plant I saw the most growing up is peonies. Next to that was our province flower tiger lily. Boy, I was sheltered from so much beauty when it comes to flowers/plants/trees etc. You are a blessing Claus.
Wowso beutiful flowiirs

The joy u show is contagious.. beautiful and look forward to seeing you soon!!
Great peonies... even though I don't have any of yours. Amazing varieties!
I hope I can write this thought properly. One of the the things that I so love about your gardens is that, although you do a lot of repetition, although you have color palettes, your gardens never look too "safe," or, too "tasteful," if you know what I mean. I was watching this video thinking about that a bit and trying to figure out why. I think one of the reasons, at least as far as bloom colors, is that, within a color, your modulations are actually quite exciting. There are shades of the same hue, yes, but also slight clashes here and there as well. "Clashes" in the best sense, I mean, where you have, say, a warmer tone of a color next to a cooler tone. To me, that, in addition of course to dozens of other elements that you master, is extremely exciting. You're not doing this idea with, say, the loudness that Great Dixter does it. No, you are doing it in your more gentle way. Against the soothing elements of the more straight forward repetitions, it's thrilling. I hope this makes some sense.
EDIT: I thought I'd rewatch the video to see if I could find an example of what I'm trying to describe so that it's not so abstract. At 2:28 are the deep pink peonies. They are next to a paler pink rose -- same hue (more or less) but, in color terms, less saturation. But then the small single petal flowers in the front (don't know their name), is really a different hue, a cooler hue leaning more toward violet. And then, if I'm reading the image correctly, on the left and a bit in the distance, is what appears to be a redder peony. May be just be the way the camera is picking up the color there? But as it reads, it's a perfect example of what I am talking about -- a warmer, deeper almost red pink -- helping to activate all the other versions of pink.
Thank you SO much
Absolutely stunning peonies! Love your garden !💕
Wow so beautiful, i love those tree peonies!!!!
Beautiful! I love your videos and I appreciate you saying and demonstrating the planting. Thankyou from Canada.

So beautiful, your garden is dreamy.
Your peonies are gorgeous and your soil is even better! Soooo wish I had your soil! I’m stuck with heavy clay soil. South USA
What a lovely garden! Thank you for sharing.
Claus, I like how you pronounce the word peonies , in a certain British TV gardening show they repeatedly say “peenis” , which is hilarious 😂
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your garden and knowledge!
I love your Roman-looking folly so much & your urns too! Do you ever open your garden to the public?
I enjoy your garden very much. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I don't have any peonies yet, but I think I will plant some this fall, they look fantastic in your garden Claus! I now know what companions to put them with :)
