The "Fox Body" 5.0 Mustangs of the 1987 to 1993 period are just now beginning to get awareness from the mass audience. Us owners always knew we had a great car, great aftermarket, even magazines devoted to them. One of the things that people don't realize is the stunning value these cars had, the bang for the buck. Mine is a 1988. I bought it brand new, literally off the showroom floor, at Burch Ford in La Habra, California. I really liked the GTs since they started getting serious with them in 1982. I was not a fan of the louvers on the taillights and faux ground effects of my era GTs (for those that don't remember, this is when jet boys were putting goofy plastic slotted overlays on top of their existing tail lights, a fad that thankfully died). However, I was looking for a nice used one when the owner of the dealership made me a deal I could not refuse on a brand new GT. I paid $14,700 for it. For the next several years, this was my commuter car. I put 190,000 miles on it before I retired it as my driver, I still have it and it has 201,000 miles on it. During that time, I had the following thing done on it, almost all of it I did myself: Many many oil changes, because I wanted to preserve the engine, one radiator, one heater core, three alternators, a fuel injector, a number of brake jobs, one alignment (not much to set on these cars), one rubber bushing replaced, one clutch replacement, one shift quadrant replacement, one in-tank fuel pump replacement. That is it. It never broke, it never let me down. The heads and not even the valve covers have ever been off. It still has great pull. The 5 speed is a great transmission on this car, there are no bendy linkages, the shifter/stick screws right onto a stub coming out of the transmission. This car carried me through heavy storms, winds, 113 degree heat for weeks on end; I brought computer and server spares with me when I was a technician. When my hot water heater gave up, I got another one at Sears, put down some old carpeting in the back of the trunk, wired the hatch down on the part of the water heater box sticking out the back, and drove it home that way. The brakes are not super great, an upgrade to bigger discs or four whee discs may be a good option for those interested. It has power everything except seats, but even those have a power lumbar support. I got so much use out of this car and when friends were going through car after car every few years, I just kept going and the car was paid for after 48 months--I had no car payments for over a decade. It was the best money I ever spent, and the best value of anything I have purchased, besides my house. Grab a good one while you can if interested.
I can't believe you didn't say anything about the map light that looks like an articulated flashlight mounted above the rear view mirror. That is definitely something you never see in modern cars.
the blinker slowing down is because there isnt enough voltage getting to it when the rpms drop too low, either from too much wiring and/or too thin of wire. it might have been like that from the factory or age might have done its work on the grounds. on my truck everything electrical would dim or slowdown below about 1k rpms, fixed the headlights with a relay and just deal with the slower wipers and blower motor.
Known as the Ford Fox platform, it was used for 15 years until 1993 and many models of vehicles built on it. The platform name became part of a nickname that got so popular for the Mustangs built on it during that time, that they are still often referred to as, The Fox Body's.
The dash reminds me of the late 80s/early 90s Tempo. Biggest differences being buttons instead of knobs on the sides of the instrument hood and the windshield starting higher up.
@2:07 can confirm this quirk lasted into the early SN95s as well and scared the crap out of me for the first few months of owning the car - thought I was already going to be sinking a few grand into a new trans. Nope, that's just how the AOD/AODE likes to be sometimes.
My '86 Foxbody had the "Mustang" taken off the trunk lid and doesn't say "Mustang" anywhere else on the car. A parking ticket attendant wrote down for make and model of the car "Ford 5.8" on the ticket looking at the fender emblems (the car has a 351W swap) since she had no idea what kind of car it was.
I've noticed RC sometimes turns the wheel by shuffling his hands instead of the over-hand; seems a bit awkward and stiff, I always heard the over-hand wheel turn was smoother and "better"/more relaxed and casual. edit: @ 9:37 he turns with both shuffle and over-hand cross
I’m not really that tall, I’m 6’1”, but I drove one of these in high school/college from time to time (in the 90’s) and I never noticed the driving position to be a problem at all.
My first car was a black 1990 LX 5.0 with 5 speed manual, I saved up for 2 years working at the local car wash in order to buy it. My dad hated that car because I got 2 tickets in it within the first month of driving it lol. They certainly are very fun cars to drive. Also the dead light switch was there for the Mustang GT, it would have been the switch to turn on the fog lights for them. I suspect that the car you're driving is a LX because my car had the same dead switch, anyways cool video!
Had a 1990 5.0 LX Hatchback for 8 years. It was a 5-speed though and you really haven't driven a foxbody Mustang unless you've driven it with a manual transmission.
The fox body mustangs were built off the Ford fairmont platform from 1979 to 1993 not the Falcon. The Ford Falcon built mustangs were built from 1964 and a half to 1973.
You need to drive a non POS Fox Body. I know, i know good luck finding one nowadays that hasn't been ragged on. But if you find a below 120k mileage stick shift stock foxbody 5.0 your view will sway a little bit. Not drastically but enough to put a smile on your face.
they have seat rails for the seats to go further back. I had them installed in a fox body I had. not for me. but for a friend that would borrow it every now and then.
a friend had an auto and manual swapped it and then bought another auto fox with very low miles like 32k and swapped everytging from his manual over, even the manual trans
604h22a Awesome! I like the 4 eyed mustangs better but I will admit I was looking for an 88 McLaren before I went for the Ford. A lot of guys prefer the 87-93's.
604h22a I daily drive my triple black 86 GT convertible I bought in june . But I also have an 04 Sebring Touring convertible. Not bad for still in high school?
I once had a 1990 Mustang LX 5.0 coupe. It had a 2.73 final drive (4 spd OD auto) w/o limited slip. Terrible to drive in winter precip, especially icy roads. With the tall gearing, it was slow off of the line but responsive once it got going. It actually got decent highway mpg. I always used 89 octane (mid-grade) gas. Reliability was never a strong point of the cars but when they ran, they were relatively fun to drive.
I usually fill it with 87 because I only get pinging at WOT. Also I don't beat the crap out of it on a daily basis because it's my daily, and usually drive like a grandpa. lol
Sam D Media that pinging is a problem even if you don't hear it. you'll get detonation, long before you hear it. plus if you get detonation at WOT I'm almost certain you get it under any sort of acceleration on a warm day. it takes 2 seconds to adjust the timing dude.
I love your videos guys but, Mr Regular I've noticed that you start cars and throw it into gear and go right away. It would be much better for the car if you started it when you got in to give it time to warm up a bit or start. You could do this when asking about adjusting the seat. But idk it might already be warm I don't know what goes on before the video starts. Thanks for reading and love the videos
Connor Kendrigan it's better to drive than let a car idle to warm up, just drive conservatively. For example shift to stay under 3k rpm. It will reach operating temp quicker too.
Jake2 I agree to a point (eg if it's VERY cold outside I would let it idle for a few mins) but I don't like the practice of starting an engine and immediately throwing it into gear. You should start it and wait for the revs to stabilise before putting a load on the engine.
His blinker relay is dying. That's why it's so loud and voltage-sensitive. The blank below the headlight switch is for GT foglights. The lights were great. The switches were hilariously bad (one of the first things to disappear from the junkyards). Ford rammed too many amps through the switchpack, and after a few years, the headlight and foglight switches would overheat, and start working again when they cooled down. For months, I couldn't figure out why cars kept pulling off the road when I came up behind them. Turns out that my lights were flashing on-and-off, and out of sync - exactly like the Fox-body that the Reading cops used to drive to goad people into racing with them.
I have replaced my headlight switch, like, 5 times--with new or used ones! Someone should get their engineering degree revoked for THAT! Same with the ignition switch.
Give it up. I used 2 junkyard units and one brand new one before I just wired the headlight and foglight switches to fire a pair of heavy-duty relays. Problem solved. My folks also had a Mercury Sable with the foglights. When I replaced the switch, I didn't have the heart to tell them it had MELTED and damn near burned up the car. I had to cut the entire connector out of the wiring harness.
The harnesses may be thinner than necessary, but the problem, at least on my car, would disappear for months after I switched to a lower mileage switch or almost a year when I bought a new one.
Sam D Media good luck! And don't worry about manual for your commute! I spend 2-3 hours a day in rush hour traffic trying to get to/from work, have been driving standard for the past year doing it and have no regrets! Not to mention it has been a long time since I have stalled!
Mine was AOD originally. I didn't know how to drive stick before I swapped it. I learned. Check out stinger performances writeup on how to swap in a 5speed, it's pretty helpful. I also have a list compiled of all the parts required from when I did it. It took me about a year to collect everything off of craigslist.
Re: that damn seat... Aww, honey, as soon as I saw you struggling with the door I was immediately transported back in time to the Great American Disappearing Interior Caper. I never proved equal to the task so I do hope if you get to the bottom of that one you'll be kind enough to share. It's funny, because back when we were in high school in the l97Os my late husband's lst car was this cute little Fiat 2-passenger called an X-l/9 (he bought it 2nd hand off our French teacher). He was 6'4" & I'm 5'9" & we both had adequate space in that Fiat to drive it & operate the stick-shift pedals, no problem; but ten years later when we could afford our first brand new cars there was scarcely a domestic car of any size or kind that wasn't so short on interior space you'd have to stop the car & get out just to have enough room to change your flippin' mind! LOL. It was CRAZY, but also undeniably universal across just about every domestic make.
I know this was a while back in a better RUclips time and all respect to that kid for sharing it. I didnt watch the whole vid I'm sure its his first car long ago, but I couldn't ride with him. He's being way to serious about a fox body i know pride but still it's no way I'd let someone record my car and not let my car shine, ping or not. I reg car was like "Just lemme drive kid". Any person who turns wrench's knows you can fix anything and everything on a engine/dtiveline etc. There's no need to act like this isa 1 of 4 from Jays garage... Shit breaks fix it and upgrade it. I've had a Jag and had to order parts in pounds so yeah I speak from experience. I gotta vid of me smoking my tires on my old channel and I had pings clunks knocks squeak's you name it. Rant ovet!✌️
Rods Ahed these cars do not have airbags. Any pre 1990 car does not have them. They weren't mandatory until the 1990 model year so the 90-93 mustangs do have them. You can also tell by looking at the wheel :-)

I’ll be doing some videos on it soon, hopefully by summer I’ll have a *new* build breakdown on it.
thanks for the information
Grab a good one while you can if interested.
fire
lol @ you guys stopping with that hyundai, that's a 20mph passing distance in the UK
he's a country boy. i'd have squeezed into this distance 5 times over too. let someone in? in front? nooo!!
Yeah, great idea to drive like a dickhead just to prove a point in somebody elses car.
This is painfully similar to my 86 camaro... weird clunks, rattles, blinker slowing down, slushy automatic, and pinging at high rpm lol
lol the 87 regal at 2:25 was best part of this video
Lost me at...don't get on it.
I have owned over 20 foxbodys since 1998. Have 3 notchbacks at the moment. 2 nitrous cars and a turbo car..
Foxbody for life
Every time a see an 80s mustang I always call them fox bodies
Every 80s mustang was a fox body
I can't believe you didn't say anything about the map light that looks like an articulated flashlight mounted above the rear view mirror. That is definitely something you never see in modern cars.
jedicide it’s a rolling light
the blinker slowing down is because there isnt enough voltage getting to it when the rpms drop too low, either from too much wiring and/or too thin of wire. it might have been like that from the factory or age might have done its work on the grounds. on my truck everything electrical would dim or slowdown below about 1k rpms, fixed the headlights with a relay and just deal with the slower wipers and blower motor.
Known as the Ford Fox platform, it was used for 15 years until 1993 and many models of vehicles built on it. The platform name became part of a nickname that got so popular for the Mustangs built on it during that time, that they are still often referred to as, The Fox Body's.
its just an automatic chill out
Exactly...
The blinkers sound like someone ominously flicking a cow bell
Interested in driving my crx HF with a 5 speed?
The first manual car I drove was a '91 LX 5.0 Convertible. It's an absolute blast, especially when the top is down
I sleep at that Rutter's every time I make deliveries in Leesport. That's hilarious
had a ‘86 lx 5liter convertible w/ aod...man i miss that car, speed density sucked but it was a great automobile
That turn signal sound!
My '86 Foxbody had the "Mustang" taken off the trunk lid and doesn't say "Mustang" anywhere else on the car. A parking ticket attendant wrote down for make and model of the car "Ford 5.8" on the ticket looking at the fender emblems (the car has a 351W swap) since she had no idea what kind of car it was.
if you ever come to Holland, you can review my 1990 Volvo 440 DL!
not a proper volvo
I've noticed RC sometimes turns the wheel by shuffling his hands instead of the over-hand; seems a bit awkward and stiff, I always heard the over-hand wheel turn was smoother and "better"/more relaxed and casual.
edit: @ 9:37 he turns with both shuffle and over-hand cross
I’m not really that tall, I’m 6’1”, but I drove one of these in high school/college from time to time (in the 90’s) and I never noticed the driving position to be a problem at all.
would you be interested in driving my 2000 plymouth neon with the 3 speed auto?
"How do tall people drive foxbodys?" you drive a gt.
@11second69nickeynova ugly ass nova
That transmission whine perpetually reminds me of Yellow Cabs in NYC
How do tall people drive fox bodies? I am 6'5" and the first thing I did was unbolt the front seat and create brackets to move it 2 inches back.
I'm 6' 250lbs and don't have a problem fitting in my fox. Maybe it has an aftermarket seat mount?
Lethal Snipes I'm the exact same height and weight and also have no problem at all fitting in
not even going to let the car warm up
Bad DFW Mid-Cities Drivers I'm from dfw
He is probably used to newer cars that don't need warm up. He doesn't know that you have to wake these cars up.
That G-Body though 2:27
You need to drive a non POS Fox Body. I know, i know good luck finding one nowadays that hasn't been ragged on. But if you find a below 120k mileage stick shift stock foxbody 5.0 your view will sway a little bit. Not drastically but enough to put a smile on your face.
Tristen Sharba I actually have a 1989 fox lx 5.0 coupe 5 speed with 58k actual miles
Steven Densmore keep that bad boy it is going to be a classic soon.
they have seat rails for the seats to go further back. I had them installed in a fox body I had. not for me. but for a friend that would borrow it every now and then.
@5:21 you are not suppose to jump into the other lane when you turn like that. I got a ticket for doing that once. Something new to learn.
You need to drive a 5 speed GT!!!
How does mr regular find all of these rare auto cars? Too bad we want manuals.
Ethan Shrago rare auto? and manual cars were actually lower models
a friend had an auto and manual swapped it and then bought another auto fox with very low miles like 32k and swapped everytging from his manual over, even the manual trans
Andy V. How???? Considering the computer controls the shifts on a auto ...
+hittin-low_150db+ he used the computer off the manual
You're going to pretend that a V8 foxbody slushbox is rare? Okay. Go ahead junior.
I love foxbodies. I learned to drive in an '86 GT with a five speed
I learned to drive a stick in mine. Wish it had been my first car....
Same! learned to drive in a 88 gt convert
604h22a Awesome! I like the 4 eyed mustangs better but I will admit I was looking for an 88 McLaren before I went for the Ford. A lot of guys prefer the 87-93's.
Yeah I know what you mean. What is your current car?
I currently daily a honda but I bought a 90 lx 5.0 notch for the summer.
If it's pinging, why exactly doesn't he use premium gas?
I usually fill it with 87 because I only get pinging at WOT. Also I don't beat the crap out of it on a daily basis because it's my daily, and usually drive like a grandpa. lol
I use 87 too. Always have. I baby my 1987 GT because I've had it since new and it and I are now geezers...
Sam D Media that pinging is a problem even if you don't hear it. you'll get detonation, long before you hear it.
plus if you get detonation at WOT I'm almost certain you get it under any sort of acceleration on a warm day.
it takes 2 seconds to adjust the timing dude.
I'm surprised a stock foxbody would have to use anything other regular gas. weird
Warhead Urban Exploration Racecar bruh.
Has that whining sound in first gear you hear in the Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis.
whats a falcon? this engine needs a rebuild and trans swap
Shout out to the good old turn signal relay that got people pulled over in old Ford's back in the 9s early 2000s....tbc
now you need to try out a notchback 5.0
I love your videos guys but, Mr Regular I've noticed that you start cars and throw it into gear and go right away. It would be much better for the car if you started it when you got in to give it time to warm up a bit or start. You could do this when asking about adjusting the seat. But idk it might already be warm I don't know what goes on before the video starts. Thanks for reading and love the videos
Connor Kendrigan it's better to drive than let a car idle to warm up, just drive conservatively. For example shift to stay under 3k rpm. It will reach operating temp quicker too.
Jake2 ah ok thanks
Jake2 I agree to a point (eg if it's VERY cold outside I would let it idle for a few mins) but I don't like the practice of starting an engine and immediately throwing it into gear. You should start it and wait for the revs to stabilise before putting a load on the engine.
alexaescht that's more what I was thinking as if you notice especially in this video mr regular goes right away and doesn't even wait a second
Or two
what year?
tell the owner to run higher octane or back off the timing before he does damage.
People actually used to sit up straight in the 80s. The seats didn't need to sit in the trunk.
It's a automatic, you didn't drive a fox body you drove a cub body
As everyone says, should have got one with a T5.
Mine came with an Auto, I swapped it to manual in two days in my garage.
Yeah seems to be the theme, it's what I got though. haha, I'm swapping in a manual within the next year hopefully. This car is still my daily...
Sam D Media good luck! And don't worry about manual for your commute! I spend 2-3 hours a day in rush hour traffic trying to get to/from work, have been driving standard for the past year doing it and have no regrets! Not to mention it has been a long time since I have stalled!
For 29 years, I have been driving a stick GT. It was fun for about a week. Then I wish I had bought an auto!
Why do you put it in gear so fast? I've always been told that's bad for the car.
Did anyone notice how fast he put it in drive after he started it.💀
My Ford van has the same clunk in the rear end! If you get air shocks and jack up the back it goes away LOL!
I miss the drone of my car, a '94 GT vert. Stored until the kids get a bit older.
I dig the autos..quick off the line 1985 and 1986 gts...badass
lol that sheetz your at. I go there all the time. lmao. I'm looking to get a Foxbody as my first car
Is it difficult to do manual swap on a foxbody ?
Sounds more like an LTD 5.0 inside a Fox body. Transmission winding reminds me of them.
Automatic? :(
Also, do these things have airbags tho?
Rods Ahed these cars do not have airbags. Any pre 1990 car does not have them. They weren't mandatory until the 1990 model year so the 90-93 mustangs do have them. You can also tell by looking at the wheel :-)
The AOD in these were absolute junk. You really need to drive one with a 5 speed or a C4 swapped in or something.
I love my Foxbody, but of course it's ford I work on it every weekend but when it is driving man it's the most fun I've ever had driving
The sound of that era of Ford Automatics is very distinctive. Don't know what makes that low wooooOOOO sort of whine but they all do it.
