Great video! Really like your concept of the 7mm shell casing. Brass wont wear down on end as the oak cavity for the char cloth would eventually do.Besides the natural grove for the o-ring.WELL DONE. Thank You Very Much !!
Dude!!!! You're a genius. I spent hours trying to get the notch for the o ring just right. The o ring fits perfect and it will last indefinitely. And I just so happen to have a 7mm rifle. Thanks for sharing!!!!
A copper plumbing stub looks like a test tube. (It keeps pipes from chattering/vibrating from changes in pressure.) Available at HW store. No soldering required. Nice build. I've been having trouble fitting the groove of a dowel. This method looks promising.
I thought I was the only one who had done this. I used a cal. .223 rem.case (5.56 NATO) (current US military caliber) and a 3/8 tube and used the same head design. Good ideas come from good people.
I don't think it's about new things, but honesty, I mean, your process is life, not just info, we share a part of your experience, Unique and centered in your words, description and goals. It is never the same.
Nice shirt. If it's the same place I'm thinking I pick up there every now and then. Usually going to CT or Long Island. Neat idea using the 7mm case. Gives me a reason to shoot this weekend
That’s a really nice twist! Allowed a lot of efficiency. I think I’ll give it a try myself. I sure hope that people asked for the tutorial, because I think I’d like to find it to guide me along a little more efficiently. :-) Thank you very much!
nice job, good reason to live in the us, we cant have ammo over here in Spain!! Next time you make char cloth roll the denim in to a tight cigarette roll style and then put them in the tins and fire them, makes a much better charcloth that way!! really nice build. Now where can I get several spent shell casings!!
Hello, I tried to make it. But the piston with 2 rings. Still have pressure inside but it didn't work. I would loved to share with you mine to have a look.
An excellent idea using the shell casing it is a Bulletproof idea. One hundred percent cotton cloth is critical no cotton poly blends. Other natural fibers also will work.
A bit late with reply, but Wikipedia is good as it lists all dimensions of different cartridges. I asked a friend for any cartridges and he only had a 300 Win, and Wikipedia confirmed it had the same base diameter of the 7mm Rem mentioned in the vid, meaning I can use with the 1/2 inch tubing. Or as another comment states - used 3/8 tubing with a .223 shell.
Has the copper corroded? I see this video was made 12 years ago. Also, do you would stainless steel tubing work just as well? I know absolutely nothing about this style of fire starter.
after many failed attempts at just using a wooden dowel with an o-ring, I went this route as I reload myself,, works great, compression is ridiculous tho, its a 2 hander to get it to work lol, lights punk wood and char cloth easily.thanks
YES ! I saw my first one in 1965 when I visited our Negritos guides village in the Philippines ( I was attending the Navy jungle school - "JEST" at NAS Cubi Pt., Subic Bay area. ) Later, assigned duty at the JEST (75-78), I traded "Pepe" our trapper for a very fine, unique "Sol-Poc" ( fire piston ) - which I brought to the USA . Showing / demo. it and methods - , the bamboo fire saw, the fire plough, etc. at the first primitive skills gathering called "Rabbit Stick" ( in Utah) --- the piston and the methods were big hits ! Later in our video ( "Woodsmoke" ) on fire making methods - it spread across America. "Mountain Mel" Deweese, Ret. USN PR1-PJ, SERE-POW / JEST Inst. (59-82).
The spent shell casing idea....Genius! but can the casing size be other than 7mm Remington Magnum? of say a caliber up from that? I don't have a shop handy with bench vice grip, torch etc. to weld the copper cap at the end of the tubing....would a 8"x1/2" copper stub out do as well? I can get spent shell casings from a friend at the fire range, but don't know if 7 mm mag fired a lot. I think many would be .22, 9mm, .38, .45 of handgun calibers...not sure of any rifle spent casings. Being close to military base and in a state big on hunting may be some rifle rounds spent in practice, not sure tho. so would any hand gun casings do?
You can go on line and look at the detailed dimension of a 7mm Remington Mag case and compare it to any other case you think might be similar. The detailed dimensions of all cartridge casing are readily available.
Several belted magnum cartridges are based on the same cartridge foundation. For example the 300 Winchester Magnum has that same dimensions at the base of the 7mm Rem Mag case. I am sure other belted magnum cartridges use the same base case design, so several caliber cartridges should work equally well.
What o-ring size did you use on the 7mm? I can't find anything at the local hardware store that is close enough. I have built a fire piston with a stub out and one with 1/2" copper tube and cap. Still no luck with an o-ring that fits the 7mm brass good enough to create a tight seal.
Not sure what size, I just used one that fit snug as I put it in the cylinder. I got a small box of assorted O rings at Harbor Freight for a few bucks, that way I could test and use the best size. If you use one that is to small, it may seem to work at first but then you will get "blow by" and loose compression.
Would have really love to see this in action‼️ you have everything you needed right there in front of you? That was like baking a five layer cake and then not cutting into the center!!!
Ive used old shop rags for char- cloth...The Fire Piston is one of the few fire staring tools Ive yet to make...Ive see these things for sale but the efficacy for the price questin always comes up..If I make one myself and its not effective Ive ony got myself to blame and some injured pride but Ill still have some money in my wallet....
Clever idea, but I suspect the brass casing, being more dense than wood, will absorb some of the heat you generate with the piston. Clever ideas are not always better ideas, but it looks good on paper.
No demo? Not even a fitting to show us that the seal works? The o-ring in this video is far too small to work. Very curious what size o-ring WOULD work. No standard sized o-ring at HD or Lowe's will do the trick (I've tried), and that includes their packages of random o-rings. For most designs you carve out the piston to accommodate the o-ring. But for this design you have predetermined diameters for both piston and tube. Without an o-ring that works, you have little choice but to wrap string.
Damn Great design !! Beware of TWO O ring Models. FACT the closer the O ring seal is to the front of the piston, the hotter your piston will be. O rings to far from front, are NOT keeping HOT air in FRONT of Char cloth, or Better Natural material. THINK of the Physics, or HOW it WORKS !!
That is freakin' genius! Well done sir!
Great video! Really like your concept of the 7mm shell casing. Brass wont wear down on end as the oak cavity for the char cloth would eventually do.Besides the natural grove for the o-ring.WELL DONE. Thank You Very Much !!
WOW! That was the best twist I've seen yet! Now I have to make the time to experiment with some pistol calibers, Thanks for sharing

Very nice hack for a fire piston. It cuts out some extra work in the build.
Good job that's what I tell my boys is thinking out of the box very impressive an old way of building fire with a new twist good job
Great idea! I have had trouble with the notch I will give this a shot. I would like to see a video of this working.
I thought I was the only one who had done this. I used a cal. .223 rem.case (5.56 NATO) (current US military caliber) and a 3/8 tube and used the same head design. Good ideas come from good people.
That is the best use of materials for making a "home-brewed" fire piston that I have seen! Subbed. Be blessed. John

I built my fire piston using copper tubing also. It's sturdy and indestructible. But integrating a 7mm Remington Mag is just cool.
I love the idea of the shell casing. Since I'm a reloader, it looks like I have a new project.
That’s a really nice twist! Allowed a lot of efficiency. I think I’ll give it a try myself. I sure hope that people asked for the tutorial, because I think I’d like to find it to guide me along a little more efficiently. :-) Thank you very much!
Nest idea. Best I've seen. Thanks.
Awesome! Great job, and thank you.

Great make! You have dimensions on tube length and the dowel rod size? Thanks man!
Clever idea that using spent ammo for the piston.
Great job! Very inventive! What's the dowel size? just so I don't have to bring shells into home depot lol
Been using jean material for years. Love it
Great idea ! Looks nice, I'm going to try my luck at making one like yours. Looks great !
Love idea, but I live in the uk. Getting hands on shells is very hard. Any ideas on getting any used ones.
Move to the good ole US of A

Awesome! Gonna test making one.

what on earth is punk wood?
Proud of this video. Imagine my Filipino ancestors invented the fire pistons. it gets amazing along the timeline.

Copper plumbing stub is excellent. I'm looking for a good fit for o-ring. This might be it.

American ingenuity right there.
Like who wouldn't like this ?? There is all kinds but WTF !!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
You sir are a genius, That is perfect!
I like your design the best and I'm gathering materials now. Using the 7mm Mag case was a great idea. Many thanks.
Clever use of a spent shell, it really is the perfect shape for making a fire piston!
great ideas Mr. Brown..thanks
What o-ring size did you use on the 7mm? I can't find anything at the local hardware store that is close enough. I have built a fire piston with a stub out and one with 1/2" copper tube and cap. Still no luck with an o-ring that fits the 7mm brass good enough to create a tight seal.
what do you call the end cap and where did you buy?
Was just wanting to ask your advice, would a stub out work as well do you think?
ready made o ring grove, now that's cool

Smart. Five stars smart. Great ideas all around.
What is on the end of the piston ?
Is it a rubber ball ?
I just bought a copper tube and cap at Home Depot I find the inside diamenter is slighly larger than 1/2 inch how did you compsentate for this
The O-ring makes up the difference.
I’m 12 yrs too late. But that’s a really awesome idea!
Thanks for a great video. Appreciate it.
No demo?
Would have really love to see this in action‼️ you have everything you needed right there in front of you? That was like baking a five layer cake and then not cutting into the center!!!
please show how you made it
You can use a plumbers stub, it's a copper tube already blocked off, it will save you some work....
Ok 2 requests. 1. Do a video of how to build one 2. Could you sell me one?
GOOD JOB SMART IDEA!!
Show me how to build it with a 9mm casing..
Very clever idea!
I definitely haven't seen one like this
Love it! But if you make a fire piston video, you just gotta show us that your design works in the video. Proof of concept and whatnot.
why?
Proof of concept? People have been using these for years...the concept has already been proven
@@erikparker9900 because it makes fire it must make fire we want fire :)
Would you be willing to sell one ?
i wanted to try one but then i saw what a stubout cost. i think it was alot
cheaper to solder on caps as opposed to buying a stubout
Thanks for the good idea.
You should show how to make it please
man that great I got 7mm got to get dial rod... thanks...
Well played sir!
thanks for the tips.awesome work.
Great way to re-use a spent round.
My 7mm rem mag casings aren't fitting in my stub out
you can always use epoxy to attach the endcap
Is it proven? Have you gotten combustion and is there a vid?
yes, yes, and no
Cool Thanks!
Love it best one I've seen I'm going to make it myself but your crazy if you don't do a how to video before someone else steals your idea
Very cool!
that is a great idea i will have to tri that
I ve been toying with that same idea yea show us
show me how
I would like the diagram of it
great idea, thanks
It goes without saying but please make sure the round has been fired. No primer in it. Before doing this.
Yeah, and don't put guns in your mouth, either....smh
Can u do a video please
Clever idea, but I suspect the brass casing, being more dense than wood, will absorb some of the heat you generate with the piston. Clever ideas are not always better ideas, but it looks good on paper.
I suspect you’re wrong, I made one, it works great, alot of compression tho
exelente firepiston good
Nice!!
Thank You . Nice
how about 9mm luger
Great idea

show us
No fire
if it worked he would have proudly shown it. I call BS.
mpkunz6336 what washer did you use I’m having issues with compression.
Great idea
