Phil is obviously a Bus Driver/Wheel Master, No fear from the familiarity of thousands of miles on the same circuit and having myself driven older Leylands with Spicers as a route bus just as the Automatic Volvo's came in its obvious he owns the road.
You very quickly learned with non synchro buses that a cold box means thicker oil meant cranky shifts up and especially down until the gearbox oil and the box itself warmed up and everything expanded back to tolerances.
I remember Semi drivers commenting as passengers how they couldnt possibly do my Job and that always made me smile a little as a point of pride.
That said id still get lost in the box and have to save it with a way higher gear and with 40 or 50 people watching you, like Phil you shrugged it off and made it work. An Authentic, slightly crusty Phil is a rare beast and its been a laugh watching and listening to him operate.
Bring on the Summer edition Phil in Shorts and Sandals lol

I'm a school bus driver with a newer International but I could drive this bus, too. I wonder how many school bus drivers can say that? I know what you mean about cold transmissions. You have to adjust your shifts as the transmission warms up. It's not that hard, really.

I live in rural Alabama. The town up the road has a rural Greyhound Bus Stop. The Greyhound Bus comes through and stops once a day. All that's there is a small building where you can get out of the rain. It would be so cool, when several people are standing out there with there suitcases, waiting for the newer Greyhound Bus to pull in, you would pull in there with this old vintage Greyhound about 15 minutes before the other bus.. go really slow , freaking them all out.. making them think, this is their bus... then make the loop and leave.. lol lol lol

Watch Phil’s hand when he shifts - he never forces it, he guides it. Palm and hand placement are key. I teach this all the time and most don’t get it.

    • @sinistersparky9657
      @sinistersparky9657 5 лет назад +4

I totally agree @Wreckerboy, you ask for the gear versus demanding it. If you can match the engine and trans to the same RPM they will get together otherwise they’ll fight. In heavy haul, especially off highway (in my case hauling equipment on fires) if I miss a gear halfway I can have a transmission failure so I teach my drivers to cover the clutch when floating gears so if it clips the gear you can get the torque off quickly. This method also disables the Jakes during shifting while still allowing for “Jake shifting”. Wreckerboy probably knows what I’m talking about and I’m talking to those who don’t 🙂

Scott, look for an original anti-siphon fitting on the line from the tank. On boats they sometimes pick up junk from the tank and it wedges in the ball causing an obstruction to the flow of fuel. Now if there is a weak spot in the line or one of the fittings along the line upstream of the anti-siphon it can suck air. This would also show up as fuel draining out of the line back to the tank.

The bus drivers really earned their pay a few years ago. Scott is really smart great person with amazing can do attitude and amazing mechanic i think. There has been a real nice 1948 X Grayhound for sale in my area for years and it is a nice bus. Over ten years ago it was 10 grand and i see it on Craigs for 25 grand firm still setting in same place, it has a two speed and 471. Was converted into an RV by a company and only 9000 miles sense with real deep tread on tires and cracks from age. I think no one like Scott out here to get it up and running proper, years ago when i looked at it was told needs batteries and trans leaks.

I drove school bus- retired from it. Was trained on 5 speed manual. Some had to be double clutched, others had synchros. I've been surprised by Scott not double clutching his old bus when shifting. Sometimes- if you know the vehicle well- you know when the gears will mesh up at the right RPM, and you can jam them across with no clutch, but as for me, I never minded the footwork. I'd love to get behind the wheel of this old baby myself. So glad you finally worked out it's issues.

Year's ago I had an endloader with same problem, filling the secondary fuel filter with air and then stalling. Could not get it leak anywhere by pressurizing the system. This happened after an injection pump rebuild, new injectors, and all new fuel lines. In desperation I reached out to the injection pump rebuild company. The owner of the company came out with a can of shaving cream. He put foam on everything, found the air leak in five minutes, you could see the foam being sucked in. It was a brand new elbow that was cracked. It would not leak under pressure but would suck air. Maybe that might help.

Why does the 4103 have the "school bus" style door opener while the older Silversides have the "hidden linkage" door opener? And are the smooth sides original to the 4103. Great videos Scott, keep them coming and drive safe!

I don't know the answer to your first question, I've wondered that myself. It was one of the reasons I chose the silversides over the 4101 through 4103. Some of these buses came with aluminum fluting, and some did not. The 4103 was not Greyhound only, so different carriers speced it out differently.

No turbo required for this bus. It's pretty fast.

I have never seen this, and I have quite a few miles on GMs of all stripes. I HAVE seen it with a bad fuel pump, but that's not the case here. Did you pressure test line off the top of the tank? The next step is a leaky pickup tube....and oh, that's fun! Ever drop the tank on one of these?

Desert Bob, I was thinking the same thing about the fuel pickup tube inside the tank. Sounds like you have dropped a tank or two?

I’m thinking a Racepak with 6 pyrometer inputs for the EGTs, fuel pressure, flow, maybe an engine torque cell for BMEP... Racepak should sponsor this channel. Just sayin

What a great bus and still intact; no motor home conversion. I love the shifting scenes. This is a man's bus. I wonder how many bus drivers today could handle it? I'd love to have sme time behind the wheel.

The institutional knowledge and expertise of these old timers are dwindling everyday, as they pass away and health issues take over. . These old buses that remind us of our childhood , Im afraid will be all gone in the next decade, except for trailer queens unfortunately. The land in that area (My old stomping grounds) is way too expensive to be parking old buses.. But as long as we still have some old timers willing to keep them going, I hope they stay around..
Scott I'm going to be in Minny next week, wish you were still there. Would love to buy you lunch.

I've enjoyed the ride with two masters at their trade. Listening to ole Phil reminds me of my gruff grandpa who had the temperament of a Wolverine and nothing in the world got to him but grandmother. He was scared to death of her because she was a crack shot with his .22. Seriously !!

Still got a noticeable miss on a cylinder or 2 at low revs (rack adjustment between cylinders needed) but other than that, the BEASTIE CRANKS. Cool vids lads, must take like Forever to upload. I watched a few all the way, Phill is such a cool old timer. You making me want to do the same thing, love those old GM's but in Australia we got V6's & 8's here in our old Greyhounds. You never see them anymore sadly.

A really nice video to wrap up the adventures thus far ! Scott and Phil are two men i'd like to meet personally - American buses fascinate me. i remember the first time i went on holiday in decades ( vacation to you people across the pond) i caught a Greyhound from a bus station in Queens, N.Y. and spent three days and two nights ( or maybe it was the other way round) on that bus to Salt Lake city ! What an adventure that was.........Nebraska got me though, watched corn fields roll by, went to sleep, woke up - corn fields STILL passing by ! If you come from a small place, it takes some getting used to when travelling such a huge place !!! And Phil, don't sweat the F bombs ! It's just the way people are - you should hear ME when i get started - and you can, if you see some of the half wits i contend with on the roads here - watch my channel to get the way people like to try and kill themselves and others - the F bombs ( and worse) are in evidence.
Anyways, stay safe and well all of you over there until spring comes. P.S. i still have 2 slides i took of the actuall bus i travelled on, unfortunately i can't view them properly because i don't have a slide projector any more ( circa 1977/8 was when i went stateside)
