Pure Craftsmanship. Beautiful piece!
Beautiful workmanship not interfered with by useless talking, infomercials or strange music. Very relaxing and enjoyable.
That’s my goal!
Exactly!
Finally an informative video WITHOUT talking!!!! I find the narrative videos to drag on and parts that didn't need much explaining they just kept babbling on and on and on. Thank you kind sir.
The peace and quiet is nice sometimes.
I appreciate that
This video is awsome in many way's: The no talking, great ( i also never talk in my videos, pictures says more than a thousand words) The quality of your video and the stuff you make. Keep making videos like this, I'M A FAN!!!!
Yeah man!
christofix. maybe that works for you, but not for me. my thinking is, what would you learn from a teacher that doesn't speak? because i'm older and don't have the hands i had as a younger man i can't do this kind of work anymore, so watching this is more entertainment for me. i appreciate the patter as cam is working.
Thank you SO much! I always look to these type of videos for examples & techniques... NOT for entertainment or comedy! Perfect execution!
Thanks Reise!
Thank you for this video!! I hate routing tight spaces and am glad with super sharp chisels this can be done this way!!
For sure!!
It’s so satisfying to see a sharp chisel in the hands of someone that knows how to use it... keep up the great work and chanel!
Thanks bud!
I like how the butterfly wasn’t a perfect fit to allow air and extra glue to escape. Very well done!
...and no distracting music. Nice demonstration.
Cheers
A good steady hand,: I need to adhere the butterfly with two sided tape to scribe the outside of the butterfly accurately. Well done. Watched this for the third time now.
Cam, Great video and technique. I have a suggestion/observation. I suspect that most of us DIYers fail to keep bags of sawdust lying around. So, instead of using a chisel to chamfer the edges, I used some 150 grit sandpaper and made my own sawdust. Mix with glue as you demonstrate- turned out very well. And, a perfect match to my sapele bow tie.
Good call!
I do like your talking video's best.
Came here because my phone is tapping my conversations during the day, but subbed because you actually make nice videos. I love this no talk, no music format.
😂 finally I’m benefiting from big brother
@@BlacktailStudio And I'm actually a big brother that watched you.... *mind blown*
Outstanding workmanship ..... you skill, knowledge and ability is excellent .... thank you for the video .....
Thanks so much Joe
Great video, great lesson. Good to watch the work and eliminate the b.s. Many thanks.
Thanks so much Martin
Hi that was cool I would not have thought too put a bow tie in the end grain.
Awesome work. Love the no talking part
I want to do more of these.
Great job man! I watched it twice to be sure I didn’t miss anything
That’s what I like to hear!
Wonderful, thank you for producing this video man!
Thanks for saying so!
Beautiful work. It's a brave man who uses his work piece as a work surface as you do. I whince with every stroke of the chisel. One slip and there's a lot of sanding to be done. Also you start on one end and finish on the other. Was there a problem?
Noobs to Blacktail Studio will assume this video is unnarrated, but those of us who know Cam, we hear his voice throughout.
😂
Nice work
I like this. Thanks for the video.
Thanks!
Cam - if you don't want to deal with sticky tape try using a little dab of CA glue. It holds tight and will knock offs easily with a tap of a mallet! CA is your friend, remember we had a little fun during a class with CA glue? Yes this is me!
Well then I’ll have to try it!
Recently found your channel and have been binging your videos. Loving them so far :)
Do you think you could do a tour of your shop?
I always find it interesting to see what other people have, and always learn something new in how people arrange/store things, and why they own certain tools.
For sure! I’ve been meaning to do that
Very nice job 👍👍👍👍👍
Hey thanks Reynaldo!
@@BlacktailStudio you got it great video I enjoyed it keep those videos coming👍👍👍👍👍
Fantastic 👍👍👍👍👍
How far apart do bow ties need to be?
I really like your work, it's downright beautiful. You have good taste.
Nice video and a good job, but why did you do the layout in one place but place the dutchman in another?
Skilled work, no doubt, but what happened to the slab that was being marked until 0:53 in the video, the combi of epoxy and wood would be of interest to me. Thx
Sorry! I didn’t mark this bow tie from this video, and decided not to put that bow tie in. So combined footage
Would a curved shank chisel work better at shaving the bottom of the recess? Using the tape to allow you to force the epoxy in deeper is a pretty good idea, too.
Looks awesome!
Hey thanks man!
Absolutely gorgeous ❤️ 💯
You’re the man Marco!
Dude knows how to sharpen a chisel.
Looks great awesome job
Thanks! Great video. What did you use for your finish?
Beautiful
Thanks Eric!
Amazing work, looks beautiful! I'm subscribing
Boom!
Love the videos thank you for sharing them
What is the reason for the tape over the epoxy?
Keep it from running out
great!
Would you consider doing a chisel sharpening video?
I have one coming!
Excellent! For those that understand, is any narration necessary? For those that do not understand, would any description suffice?
w bradburn yes. Yes for newbies some description may. Don’t be so self righteous and judge mental.
Hi can you please share the image of bit that you were using for drilling holes.
Really enjoyed this, thank you. Is there a general rule of thumb for when a butterfly should be used to stabilize a check as opposed to just filling the check with epoxy?
Man, not that I know of
@@BlacktailStudio thanks man figured it couldn't hurt to ask
Absolutely beautiful man, amazing attention to detail. Any tips for mixing sawdust and glue for filler? I've tried with Titebond 2 and sanding dust from the project and don't get great results.
Aim a shade lighter. It dries darker. So I’ll use elm dust for walnut. Maple for elm. Etc
Your work is insanely inspirational. If doing a key with a contrasting wood tone- is it best to use the sawdust from the main wood tone? or the contrasting wood tone? In your case, they appear to both be English Walnut?
Match the main wood. Hopefully the bow tie has straight edges. That way it’ll look straight.
You've done a beautiful job; thanks for sharing. What is the final finish you use and buff?
It was Osmo polyx. Used a 3m white pad
@@BlacktailStudio Thanks!!
The bow tie at the end isn't the same as the bow tie at the beginning 🙃
Still an awesome video 💯
Thanks for showing workflow, is that oak on a walnut slab? Looks amazing!
Walnut 👍🏼👍🏼
Can you explain what the paste was in between the wood glue and epoxy, and will inlays on the face grain be done with this same process?
I believe the paste was just wood glue mixed with saw dust to better match the wood should there be any hairline voids between the chiseled hole and the butterfly piece itself.
I notice that on most of your projects you add bowties after filling large voids with epoxy. Is there any reason not to set bowties first and then pour epoxy? I had presumed I'd get a better joint in the large fill spaces if I added the epoxy after stabilizing the crack with bowties. I've done a good bit of woodworking, but I'm new to using epoxy as a filler.
Just like to do it last in case I plane or cut anything down.
What finish did you use . It looks great
Osmo here
Looks like something changed, 0:57 isn't where the Dutchman was drawn previously
What drill bit are you using?
Can a Bowtie joint be used to prevent the spreading of a crack in an 8" x 8" cedar post that is 10ft tall?
Can help anyway!
Is the epoxy alone not enough for holding the cracks and splits together? I realize the bow tie is as much for aesthetic appeal as it is for function. Just wondering
No
Do you recommend filling the void with epoxy before doing your bow ties?
I do normally
Great video! What drill bit are you using?
Little forstner bit
Can you please provide a link to the forstner bit you use? Curious.
It’s nothing special
What kind of bit is that in the drill?
Until this, I never really appreciated the advantage of using a marking knife over a sharp pencil. Locating the chisel so nicely... Ahhhh
Yup!
Show, parabéns.
I tried this technique originally with some chisels as well. It almost made me want to quit.
Ha!
Is this bow tie on top of epoxy too?
Yeah, thanks for no narrative/music.... action speaks louder than words... Nice tight work! What did you finish with?
Thanks! And Osmo
How long did you wait for that epoxy to cure before sanding?
Cant remember on this one.
Blacktail Studio manufacture says 12 hours. That doesn’t seem like fast drying 😜
Work at color matching to hide your mistakes. People look closely at inlay, has to be perfect. Its as easy as buying water based artist colors and adding a touch to your sawdust. Use a heat gun on a sample to find the match, dry color is different than wet. Sometimes the top coat will change the color so throw that on your sample too. Since you use the same basic woods this gets easy. Raw umber, burnt umber, red, yellow, black, white.
Thanks for the feedback Mike
@@BlacktailStudio LOL, just challenging your game for the big stuff you're going to want to build eventually. Complex stuff = big mistakes, cabinetry, libraries, kitchens. The reason uboobers think small is twofold, unable to find processes cost effective on a larger scale, unable to fix the large mistakes that come with it. Great art is not small or simple, imho.
What is the buffer/finish you are using?
Gem buffer and Osmo 👍🏼
Btw 0:48 and 8:35 the is another slab :D
Hi what is the measurements of your piece?
1k likes (999 before me ;)
Boom!
That raintree?
walnut 😊
👍
How do you make the bow tie
I have a video on that
Why is this neccesary for in what situations? could you explain in a sentence
Keeps the cracks from opening
Please read my comment.
Why the ass does my router continuously keep snapping bits in 3 pieces. I can’t find a video describing what way to push. I watch your vids and it looks like you just push it any direction and it moves smoothly.
I need help.
Cutting too much at once. Move to 1/2” bits if you are using 1/4
Man... Stop eating your fingernails!!!
I don’t need your judgment 😂
I like to watch DIY videos like yours and I think that is Y it was added to the list of items I could possibly like to watch. And it's not like you only share it with family and friends!. it is public and as such, I figured you want as many people to watch your videos as possible, I couldn't finish watching it because I was watching your fingers instead of what ever you are trying to share. And don't think I'll be waiting any just because of it. My comment was just a suggestion! Don't think you quite understand the difference between that and judgement. I'm sure if you have been doing that since childhood your mom told you the same thing, was she judging you to?
Anybody else notice that the piece that was marked up wasn’t the piece that was worked on ! I’m guessing there is a reason for that 😎
