Cheers for a brilliant video! Very informative and easy to follow. Other videos on Car stereo installs skip over basic things that someone who hasn't installed a car stereo before (me) wouldn't know. You nicely covered everything from start to finish!
Your video is a life saver in regards to the parking brake wire. I too kept getting that same message on my phone and couldn't figure out why it was not connecting even though I had it professionally installed. Make a long story short the tech soldered the wire to another wire why I have no idea but I ended up getting the parking brake wire grounded and it works. Thanks man.
Justin Akwetey it didn't cost anything I found a youtube video on how to install a radio on my truck and I just pull out the panel and saw how the radio was installed and found the wire. I would've taken it back where I got it installed at but they were giving me the run around.
I had a similar problem, I bought the radio on Ebay, the harness lacked the ground wire. Bought a replacement harness then grounded the wire and Android Auto works great! The ground I used there's a medal bar behind the radio, some Gorilla duct ape and it's fixed
Awesome video, not the same as my car in any real way for install but still good to see how it works and get an understanding of how the parking works etc. Thanks!
for less than $300 old cars can achieve features some new cars still dont have because the head units are replaceable now a lot of cars are using built in tablet screens that can never be upgraded.
From 2012 and later Toyota made it super easy. 2013 up, the new CEO is a westerner and FUBARed Toyota. Thanks for the video man, I have a 2011 Rav4 it's the exact same set up
@@Minnowlawl there are no controls on the steering wheel, other than Outside Temp and fuel usage button. The 2011 Toyota Rav4 Basic 4WD V6 didn't come with blue tooth or other media in or output. The other Rav4 models have blue tooth but they were the 4 cylinder models I believe.
I have a 2011 Rav4 V6, the dash panels are the exact same, only thing that's different is the AUX input is next to the mirror adjustment. I have been looking every were for a seamless double din trim piece. Thanks for sharing the companies name that makes it!!
What I like about these Sony 100 & 1000 ones is the feel of the physical buttons, just like you said. Its screen is on the smaller side (6.2” - my iPhone 13 Pro is a 6.1” and just barely smaller when I held it up next to it). But it looks&feels almost like this belongs in there, and not like somebody added an aftermarket piece. Also looked at JVC ones (NO buttons at all) and Pioneer ones (cheap buttons, cheap looking rgb lights) and even the newer Sony 1500 & 3000 ones - buttons felt really cheap & wobbly
I think this sony unit is better than the pioneer and kenwood android auto systems because of that volume control dial that acts as the voice control button when pressed, The best thing about carplay and android auto is the speed of the interface is based on the phone you have connected,
Mr Sneaky Shadow I can't compare as I haven't used any other units. But my reason for getting the sony was the volume control and price. I agree, android auto and apple carplay are great!
I have the sony xav602bt in one of my vehicles and a kenwood in the other. The sony is easier to use. The kenwood has a whole lot of audio settings makes it very complex. Both are great systems but I get confused switching from vehicle to vehicle.
Thank you for the GREAT tips!!. I do have RAV4 2007 looks just like yours and I am about to install the exactly the same configuration. Can you please offer some tips on how you wired the microphone for the unit?
I have a RAV4 limited 2011 with Push button start engine also I installed a screen radio also comes with a back up camera 😎😎. 2 cameras 1 for mirror and 1 for screen touch 😂😂
Nice! Im planning on updating my audio system also i have a 2010 rav4 with close to 90milage so im still going to be with this car for a good time, but i think you could do my installment since idk anything about this lol
Thank you for making this detailed video! I've been looking for this for a while. And to pay it back, 0:31 _kilometres_ is pronounced the same as _nanometres,_ not "thermometers" (because it's a unit of measurement and not a measuring device). A "kilometer" would be very useful when playing games like Call of Duty ;)
I installed mine a couple of years ago and I found quite a problem with these unit's screens on sunny days. Sunlight striking the seats glow back on the screen like a mirror, blocking the drivers ability to see the details and even the clock from being seen, especially with seats that have a lighter fabric or a sheepskin covers, etc. A total waste of time having one in the car. In my car, a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, I have grey sheepskin covers and that's all I see almost all day especially if the sun is in front. I contacted Sony about it and they hadn't been aware of it. They said the next models will have a matte screen, not glossy screen surface. So, with that, it sounded like I've got a lemon. I never bothered going further, nor enjoyed the unit like when I used to enjoy the original Radio/stereo, because, one day I was trying to check a station and took my eyes off the road a bit too long, I nearly lost control and on my way towards oncoming vehicles. I was just that close for a head-on collision. Lucky Karma gave me another chance. These gadgets may be good, but the distraction and the risk of collision is greater, trust me.
Dont know if this was commented already but to bypass the parking brake safety feature just integrate the parking brake wire with the other stereo ground wires.
Matching those wiring colors in the harness is a hassle. A few companies make ready made wiring adapters. I think Pioneer does for Toyota applications.
Hi there, great video with very clear instructions. How did you find a kit with the Toyota trim? All the ones I see on Amazon look like generic kits with a metal surround but no trim. I have a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 and plan on getting a new radio. I went to Best Buy and they gave me an estimate that is above my budget, so I decided I will install it myself. One thing that is confusing me because I don't see it on any video is that they wanted me to also buy an antenna adaptor. Are these necessary? How do I figure it out? Thanks
That "workaround hack" sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It's there due to NHTSA regulations. These units come with a software package installed that has a long-ish (30 seconds or so) display time for the warning screen but SONY's received so many complaints about the length of that screen display that they have a software update available for downloading that shortens this time to about 5-10 seconds (still required by law) as well as an update to the unit's lighting setup.

I've been looking into this head unit for my 2008 Rav4 because it has a simple OEish look to it. Was there an improvement to the sound out of your factory speakers?
Great video! New to electronics, what exactly did you ground the parking wire to on the unit? Did you loosen a screw on the unit and pin it under? Metal side bracket? Also thought about splicing it into the ground wire but like the idea of going directly to the head unit
What are the rca on the back for? What are they connected too? They say rear and front left and right speakers but obviously speakers don't have rca inputs! Why can't i find an answer anywhere?
Can you take that green ground wire and solder it to the black ground wire for the radio, since they all go to ground? that seems like a cleaner way to do it.
I'm glad to read your reply. I soldered mine that way last night ;0) I'm using the extra cable from the parking brake trigger and using it to extend the reverse light trigger from the fuse panel to the radio harness.
Great video and installation, looks awesome in contrast to the original head unit. Regarding the soldering, you just match the color and solder them together as seen in the video right?
Can you post a picture of how you wired the USB cord to replace the existing AUX port? I cannot find a switch that allows for charging and audio through the same port.
I purchase this 2 years ago, it is a good concepts product, but I do not recommend Hizpo to all (Probably other companies do it better). They said they will provide 2 years warranties, when the shit hit the fan, they just ignore you, This goes to asking about how to upgrade from the 7.1 Andriod to 8.0 and so on, Reset all to the original factory functions, The rear camera that given, is huge and it is not clear when it is raining, The connectors, it was stated it should be connect to the video for the rear camera, but it is not working I end up connecting to the "CD" label cable which works, There is no instructions how to change the logo from Hizpo to what ever your car logo is or any logo you wish, The Wi-Fi reception is not strong, etc. The radio constant has "Hiz" as I drive, probably it is going through the "Black spot" radio receiver, which mean it is hard to enjoy a decent music or live broadcast radio (Regardless the radio station), Same goes to GPS, there are many "Black spot" where the GPS constantly searching for satellite and when the car is station (Stopped at traffic lights), the GPS saying I am still moving at 5 km/h ... I do not recommend Hizpo.
I figured out how to copy my 100gb of music on the Ipod to my android phone & use google play. Now I can ask google assistant to play any music stored locally on the phone. Works great. I guess Ipods have become a relic.
Thank you for sharing this video. It was very informative. Have a couple of questions. 1. Do you still have a CD player mounted in it? 2. Can u switch from android to Apple car (I use an iPhone and my hubby has android) 3. What was the mount that u used to hold your cellphone?
Michelle Gregorio this model does not have a CD player. The next model does though. Yes, you can switch between android auto and CarPlay, but the phone must be plugged in. The mount is from amazon and I believe is called MPow magnetic phone mount.
I just installed mine recently (XAV-AX5000) and was getting bad radio reception until I connected the power antenna wires on each harness. The Rav4 requires power to the antenna. I noticed in your video you left the blue wires disconnected.
Thanks for the video. Would crimping the parking brake wire to the ground wire on the harness be a safe/effective way to bypass the parking brake safety feature? If not, how should I ground the parking brake wire?
Does your RAV4 have the Bluetooth? I'm thinking about buying this radio but want to keep the functionality of the steering wheel controls and microphone
Hello, what did you do with the reverse in cable? I assume that is the wire that tells the stereo to switch to cam mode... I will install it tomorrow but I have no idea where to connect that cable... @Colin Chilibeck
Leonardo Sanchez Vanegas I connected it to my reverse light power circuit at the rear of the car and ran a wire to the radio. If you can wire it to your fuse block it will save you time.
Can you set it such that it doesn't auto-launch Android Auto? Just use it to charge your phone and connected via BT only, so you you can use your phone instead of being locked out.
Thanks for the video, I’m also interested in how your phone is mounted, does that required a phone case that mates up with the thing that’s mounted on dash?
I would to try this stereo to my 2016 corolla. However, the best buy said I need to change lots of harness, adaptor, steering wheel control interface and reinstall for my backup camera. the materials and labor will cost my more 500 dollars. Just want to ask does these materials are necessary?
Yes, external mic. Lots of vids on RUclips on how to do an install. Super simple. Usually mounts at the headliner right next to the mirror and wire runs down the A-pillar. Just remember... if you do so, your car's airbag is probably in that pillar and messing around in that pillar without first disconnecting your car's NEGATIVE battery lead is just asking for trouble. Disconnect the NEGATIVE battery lead before doing ANY electrical work in the car.
hi,I have 2009 rav4 and the factory backup camera stopped working .I found and OEM one and will be attempting to replace it .how do I remove the factory camera??do I need to remove the the spare tire?
Thinking about getting this unit. I have 2008 Rav4 Sport with JBL sound. I have one question can I somehow connect already installed bluetooth mic to this unit? I have functioning Toyota bluetooth system installed and can I have my steering wheel volume up down and radio controls functioning with this Sony unit?
I'm looking at this unit for my 1993 RX7. I have a VW CC daily driver that has an SD card input. I've found I like to use those better than everything else. What I have not found out is if I can put mp3's on a USB drive and plug into the rear input and play directly. I won't use my phone for this. I want it on a USB drive. Can this unit operate like that and how does the interface operate if it can?
The easiest way to check is to go to the Crutchfield.com website and plug in your year, make model and sub-model then do a search of car stereos using the SONY search function. Crutchfield's site is really user-friendly and, once you have your vehicle entered, you can find anything stereo-wise that fits your vehicle. If you haven't already jumped in and made a purchase - I did a check and yes, it does fit your vehicle. One suggestion though. I bought the XAV-AX200SXM which has a Sirius XM Radio tuner included plus a free 3-month trial subscription and is fair-market priced. Crutchfield even offers a service for a nominal fee ($25) to actually make up all the necessary connections from the head-unit to the supplied wiring harness so that it really turns into a "plug-n-play" setup. All you do is install the unit and plug the connections into your car's stereo harness. I can't say enough about Crutchfield's pre-sales and technical support people. Crutchfield's people seem to be genuinely interested in YOU getting just what you want/need and supporting you along the way with the install and any troubleshooting.

The new firmware will automatically close the warning screen after some time. But there is a workaround hack that totally remove the warning screen.
That "workaround hack" sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It's there due to NHTSA regulations. These units come with a software package installed that has a long-ish (30 seconds or so) display time for the warning screen but SONY's received so many complaints about the length of that screen display that they have a software update available for downloading that shortens this time to about 5-10 seconds (still required by law) as well as an update to the unit's lighting setup.

does this improve the speakers quality? or is it just for an upgraded interface?
depends. some come with software EQ that can make the speakers bump louder or more refined to your tastes.

I purchase this 2 years ago, it is a good concepts product, but I do not recommend Hizpo to all (Probably other companies do it better).
They said they will provide 2 years warranties, when the shit hit the fan, they just ignore you,
This goes to asking about how to upgrade from the 7.1 Andriod to 8.0 and so on,
Reset all to the original factory functions,
The rear camera that given, is huge and it is not clear when it is raining,
The connectors, it was stated it should be connect to the video for the rear camera, but it is not working I end up connecting to the "CD" label cable which works,
There is no instructions how to change the logo from Hizpo to what ever your car logo is or any logo you wish,
The Wi-Fi reception is not strong, etc.
The radio constant has "Hiz" as I drive, probably it is going through the "Black spot" radio receiver, which mean it is hard to enjoy a decent music or live broadcast radio (Regardless the radio station),
Same goes to GPS, there are many "Black spot" where the GPS constantly searching for satellite and when the car is station (Stopped at traffic lights), the GPS saying I am still moving at 5 km/h ...
I do not recommend Hizpo.

Can you set it such that it doesn't auto-launch Android Auto? Just use it to charge your phone and connected via BT only, so you you can use your phone instead of being locked out.
the volume controls on the wheel keep working after that ?
Thanks for the video, I’m also interested in how your phone is mounted, does that required a phone case that mates up with the thing that’s mounted on dash?
Yes it’s a magnet
What do you do with the green cable when you put it to the side
Does this setup charge your phone once it is connected via USB?
I would to try this stereo to my 2016 corolla.
However, the best buy said I need to change lots of harness, adaptor, steering wheel control interface and reinstall for my backup camera. the materials and labor will cost my more 500 dollars.
Just want to ask does these materials are necessary?
These are the people I would ask:

I have a 2012 rav4 but I don’t have map radio
Love the vid! Could you put a link in the description for where I can buy this set up?
Hi, was the microphone external? Where did you install it? How hard was it to install it? Thanks in advance.
Disconnect the NEGATIVE battery lead before doing ANY electrical work in the car.
this is working reverse camera and video support also
Mohammad Tarique reverse camera works well. You can not play videos though.
Colin Chilibeck any device supported And play video in same display lcd
Mohammad Tarique not that I am aware of.
Colin Chilibeck so no you tube through carplay or Android auto?
hi,I have 2009 rav4 and the factory backup camera stopped working .I found and OEM one and will be attempting to replace it .how do I remove the factory camera??do I need to remove the the spare tire?
Does the tuner presets allow both am and fm? My gmc does it (i.e. preset 1 is fm, preset 2 is am, preset 3 is fm, and it is surprisingly useful.
Brendan Harris no ot does not. I know what you mean as I work at a GM dealership. Most manufacturers don't do that, but it is a nice feature.
Thanks for making the review video. Just a nitpick - its "heat shrink", not "shrinkwrap".
Hey Colin, can you still view google map while you're on the phone?
For the wiring, is it just same color with same color?
Thinking about getting this unit. I have 2008 Rav4 Sport with JBL sound. I have one question can I somehow connect already installed bluetooth mic to this unit? I have functioning Toyota bluetooth system installed and can I have my steering wheel volume up down and radio controls functioning with this Sony unit?
You should be able to connect an existing bluetooth to the stereo unit.
Hey thanks for the video. I'm trying to install a backup camera with the same unit, and same car. How did you do it? I'm kinda lost. Thanks!
Does the headunit make the factory speaker louder?
One question for ya bro...where did you find the trim piece for it?
Brandon Hartwell amazon.ca
Just search Rav4 double din trim.
Excellent video ty.. enjoy
Is Sony XAV AX 1000 compatible with Mazda CX- 7 I mean will it fit well in the Dashboard?
Thank you and nice job.
Hello, I have the RAV4, D4D, Model 2009, would this SONY XAV-AX100 fit? Thanks.
How are you liking the stereo? When will you install the rear view camera?
MattN03 loving the stereo. I'll be making an update video soon once I get a little more experience with the stereo.
What screen size is that Sony deck?
Does this fit in hrv 2016 or any other touchscreen radio with volume dials???
I would go to Sonys website and check comparability as I am not sure which vehicles it will fit.
