This is a video showing my process for setting up, prewiring and installing our new Sony XAV-AX100 stereo.
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments!
The Double Din housing was from Amazon.ca. It originally cost $35 but the price has gone up :-S

I made a 3 month review video here: • Sony XAV-AX100 3 MONTH... Развлечения
Cheers for a brilliant video! Very informative and easy to follow. Other videos on Car stereo installs skip over basic things that someone who hasn't installed a car stereo before (me) wouldn't know. You nicely covered everything from start to finish!
Your video is a life saver in regards to the parking brake wire. I too kept getting that same message on my phone and couldn't figure out why it was not connecting even though I had it professionally installed. Make a long story short the tech soldered the wire to another wire why I have no idea but I ended up getting the parking brake wire grounded and it works. Thanks man.
elweb30 I'm glad it helped and you were able to get it figured out!
elweb30 how much did it cost ya
Justin Akwetey it didn't cost anything I found a youtube video on how to install a radio on my truck and I just pull out the panel and saw how the radio was installed and found the wire. I would've taken it back where I got it installed at but they were giving me the run around.
I had a similar problem, I bought the radio on Ebay, the harness lacked the ground wire. Bought a replacement harness then grounded the wire and Android Auto works great! The ground I used there's a medal bar behind the radio, some Gorilla duct ape and it's fixed
Thanks for the tip on the green wire (parking brake)...much appreciated!
for less than $300 old cars can achieve features some new cars still dont have because the head units are replaceable now a lot of cars are using built in tablet screens that can never be upgraded.
Joel Santiago that’s a really good point!
Awesome video, not the same as my car in any real way for install but still good to see how it works and get an understanding of how the parking works etc. Thanks!
This answered so many questions I had! Thank you, just got everything I think I need for my 2013 Tacoma :)
Great video. I will be purchasing this unit soon and the parking brake wire trick is good to know!!
Your video was extremely helpful in assisting me to install the Sony XAV AX1000 into my 2011 Toyota RAV4. Thank you for making this video.
Hey,Do you still use this head unit? I am going to buy this for my Rav4
@@yushiy9105 Yes I do. Its a little slow since technology has improved but it gets the job done.
Awesome video guide. I will reference this when I install mine. Thanks!!
I have a 2011 Rav4 V6, the dash panels are the exact same, only thing that's different is the AUX input is next to the mirror adjustment. I have been looking every were for a seamless double din trim piece. Thanks for sharing the companies name that makes it!!
What I like about these Sony 100 & 1000 ones is the feel of the physical buttons, just like you said. Its screen is on the smaller side (6.2” - my iPhone 13 Pro is a 6.1” and just barely smaller when I held it up next to it). But it looks&feels almost like this belongs in there, and not like somebody added an aftermarket piece.
Also looked at JVC ones (NO buttons at all) and Pioneer ones (cheap buttons, cheap looking rgb lights) and even the newer Sony 1500 & 3000 ones - buttons felt really cheap & wobbly
tHANK YOU FOR DOING THIS i HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN INSTALL VIDEO FOR MY RAV4
From 2012 and later Toyota made it super easy. 2013 up, the new CEO is a westerner and FUBARed Toyota.
Thanks for the video man, I have a 2011 Rav4 it's the exact same set up
chaotic/Silence do the controls on your steering wheel work with the Sony head unit?
@@Minnowlawl there are no controls on the steering wheel, other than Outside Temp and fuel usage button. The 2011 Toyota Rav4 Basic 4WD V6 didn't come with blue tooth or other media in or output. The other Rav4 models have blue tooth but they were the 4 cylinder models I believe.
hi my reversing camera is working fine I can't get the rear view camera working don't know why any help I can't see what's going on behind me doesn't seem to work
Very nice video xplain so nice thanks for the amazon link is my new project on my wife truck
Installing the in same model rav the same head unit so this couldnt be a better tutorial
Very nicely done that is such a help to me thank you so much,👍hope you do the backup camera video soon cheers🍻👍
Very well made video. Thanks very much.
Lohrukwa hopefully you found it helpfull!
I'm looking at this unit for my 1993 RX7. I have a VW CC daily driver that has an SD card input. I've found I like to use those better than everything else. What I have not found out is if I can put mp3's on a USB drive and plug into the rear input and play directly. I won't use my phone for this. I want it on a USB drive. Can this unit operate like that and how does the interface operate if it can?
Super useful. Thanks!
Thank you and nice job.
Hey what’s the trim called I can’t find it under amazon? Thank you !!!
let go - frou frou is such a good song
Can you set it such that it doesn't auto-launch Android Auto? Just use it to charge your phone and connected via BT only, so you you can use your phone instead of being locked out.
Thanks for the video. Would crimping the parking brake wire to the ground wire on the harness be a safe/effective way to bypass the parking brake safety feature? If not, how should I ground the parking brake wire?
Theo Baum I would say thats a perfect way to do it!
Hey thanks for the video. I'm trying to install a backup camera with the same unit, and same car. How did you do it? I'm kinda lost. Thanks!
Can you post a picture of how you wired the USB cord to replace the existing AUX port? I cannot find a switch that allows for charging and audio through the same port.
hi,I have 2009 rav4 and the factory backup camera stopped working .I found and OEM one and will be attempting to replace it .how do I remove the factory camera??do I need to remove the the spare tire?
I've been looking into this head unit for my 2008 Rav4 because it has a simple OEish look to it.
Was there an improvement to the sound out of your factory speakers?
Nice! Im planning on updating my audio system also i have a 2010 rav4 with close to 90milage so im still going to be with this car for a good time, but i think you could do my installment since idk anything about this lol
I think this sony unit is better than the pioneer and kenwood android auto systems because of that volume control dial that acts as the voice control button when pressed,
The best thing about carplay and android auto is the speed of the interface is based on the phone you have connected,
Mr Sneaky Shadow I can't compare as I haven't used any other units. But my reason for getting the sony was the volume control and price.
I agree, android auto and apple carplay are great!
I have the sony xav602bt in one of my vehicles and a kenwood in the other. The sony is easier to use. The kenwood has a whole lot of audio settings makes it very complex. Both are great systems but I get confused switching from vehicle to vehicle.
This volume control is very inconvenient as it is very small
What do you do with the green cable when you put it to the side
Can you listen to the FM radio in the background while using Android Auto's navigation in the screen?
Szabolcs André yes you can. Android auto is awesome!
Thank you Colin.
Can you provide a link where you brought the double din stereo harness. I'm trying to find a good one.
great job ! I have the same car and a similar Sony unit. The problem is speakers the car comes with are terrible and those need changing too.
What are the rca on the back for? What are they connected too? They say rear and front left and right speakers but obviously speakers don't have rca inputs! Why can't i find an answer anywhere?
Excellent video ty.. enjoy
Hi there, great video with very clear instructions. How did you find a kit with the Toyota trim? All the ones I see on Amazon look like generic kits with a metal surround but no trim. The centre of standard console trim isn't rectangular so doesn't look as though the standard factory console will accept this unit. Thanks
I can't set the clock on mine. Such a pain.
hi, where did you get the holder for your phone?
Love the vid! Could you put a link in the description for where I can buy this set up?
"thanks for watching guys... and girls heh!" adorable
Rokkamakkafone I have 3 sisters. So I've been taught to never leave anyone out ;-)
Haha good, just loved the little "heh" at the end =D
Thanks for the awesome video Colin... I installed this in my car following this video.. I was even trying to install a back up camera but got stuck where the reveres in from the radio unit will be connected to the car harness? I researched a little and found that the reverse in from the radio unit will be connected to the #2 pin in 28 pinned harness of my 2012 Rav4.... But found pin#2 is empty.. any pointers?
Is there a unit similar to this that comes with a cd player ?
I have a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 and plan on getting a new radio. I went to Best Buy and they gave me an estimate that is above my budget, so I decided I will install it myself. One thing that is confusing me because I don't see it on any video is that they wanted me to also buy an antenna adaptor. Are these necessary? How do I figure it out? Thanks
Thank you for the GREAT tips!!. I do have RAV4 2007 looks just like yours and I am about to install the exactly the same configuration. Can you please offer some tips on how you wired the microphone for the unit?
Is Sony XAV AX 1000 compatible with Mazda CX- 7 I mean will it fit well in the Dashboard?
Is it compatible with ford taurus sel 2016?
Great Job. Thanks. I wish the installation of the rear-view camera was included.
I will be making a video of the camera install and posting it separately.
yea i'll be interested in the rear cam install too
Good option would be the snap-on rearview mirror camera, easy setup and works great
Do you need data on phone for Android auto to work?
How about a video showing which holes to use for mounting the side brackets.?.?
I'll have to use trial and error. :-(
I own the 2009 RAV4, D4D, and I'd like to upgrade the stereo. It would be great, if the AUX port could be retained.
I installed mine a couple of years ago and I found quite a problem with these unit's screens on sunny days. Sunlight striking the seats glow back on the screen like a mirror, blocking the drivers ability to see the details and even the clock from being seen, especially with seats that have a lighter fabric or a sheepskin covers, etc. A total waste of time having one in the car. In my car, a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, I have grey sheepskin covers and that's all I see almost all day especially if the sun is in front. I contacted Sony about it and they hadn't been aware of it. They said the next models will have a matte screen, not glossy screen surface. So, with that, it sounded like I've got a lemon. I never bothered going further, nor enjoyed the unit like when I used to enjoy the original Radio/stereo, because, one day I was trying to check a station and took my eyes off the road a bit too long, I nearly lost control and on my way towards oncoming vehicles. I was just that close for a head-on collision. Lucky Karma gave me another chance. These gadgets may be good, but the distraction and the risk of collision is greater, trust me.
Great video! New to electronics, what exactly did you ground the parking wire to on the unit? Did you loosen a screw on the unit and pin it under? Metal side bracket?
Also thought about splicing it into the ground wire but like the idea of going directly to the head unit
Yes I loosened one screw and just wrapped the wire around it then tightened it down.
It was really easy and worked like a charm!
great video
Is there anything like the android auto, but for the iPhone with this???
For the wiring, is it just same color with same color?
Hey Colin, did your radio fuse blow because of the new head unit ? Since it draw much higher amperage
Hey Colin, can you still view google map while you're on the phone?
Did you need to plug the antenna to any power source?
I want this radio!!!!
Does the JBL stereo require a different connection?
Does the headunit make the factory speaker louder?
Can you take that green ground wire and solder it to the black ground wire for the radio, since they all go to ground? that seems like a cleaner way to do it.
Jeramy Taylor I agree and believe that would work.
I didnt think about that until I had already soldered everything.
I'm glad to read your reply. I soldered mine that way last night ;0) I'm using the extra cable from the parking brake trigger and using it to extend the reverse light trigger from the fuse panel to the radio harness.
How did you install the usb? I’ve been looking online for a little bracket usb extension designed for Rav 4 and I couldn’t find one.
Starting at the 9-minute mark, you can see he pops out an unneeded console button and feeds the USB through the empty slot. It's not mounted via a bracket.
What is the type of screen? Its like your cellphone its like old gps unit?
I would say its more like a cell phone.
Hi would it work on corolla 2011 with steering controls thanks
What did you connect to the parking brake wire after?
Clean and nice work... Well done! 😀😀
Can you show a list of the products you bought to do this
Yeah that would be awesome
is it the same for the 2008-2012?
Hi Colin,
Is it possible to install a Apple Carplay to Volkswagon Up model?
Nice video. Thanks. Can you still play CD with the new touchscreen setup?
Hi Colin, thanks for your video, it helps me a lot as I have a 2010 rav4, basically the same as yours. Just want to have your suggestion on the backup camera position: do you think it's a good idea to put the backup cam to the top of the roof? or how about to attached it to the rear mirror? thanks in advance, Merry Christmas!
Justin
Hi Justin,
You can check out my other videos that show how I mounted my camera in the rear bumper. Hopefully it helps!
Merry Christmas to you as well,
Hows your experience been in your 2007 Rav4? According to many forums this year of Rav4 has huge issues with excessive oil consumption
I have a 2007 Rav4 V6 and it's going on 238k miles. It might use 3/4 of a quart in the 5k mile interval i change it at. I use Mobil 1 since new.
Dont know if this was commented already but to bypass the parking brake safety feature just integrate the parking brake wire with the other stereo ground wires.
is this compatible with 2012 collora
does this improve the speakers quality? or is it just for an upgraded interface?
depends. some come with software EQ that can make the speakers bump louder or more refined to your tastes.
planning on getting this for my 2012 accord i still use my aux input would i lose that with this head unit if so which unit could i get that would allow me to keep my functionality
Go to Crutchfield.com and start up an online chat with one of their reps.
I would to try this stereo to my 2016 corolla.
However, the best buy said I need to change lots of harness, adaptor, steering wheel control interface and reinstall for my backup camera. the materials and labor will cost my more 500 dollars.
Just want to ask does these materials are necessary?
These are the people I would ask:

Hey I just installed this in my 2007 Honda Civic last week (I also grounded my parking break wire.) it worked perfectly up until yesterday where now it’s just a black screen and the lights aren’t lighting up. But when I press the buttons or touch the screen I can still hear the beep. Also when I plug my phone in it doesn’t even charge it. I have triple checked that all my connections are good but nothing seems to be working! Can anybody help?
Give SONY a buzz. They have an excellent support unit.
Thinking about getting this unit. I have 2008 Rav4 Sport with JBL sound. I have one question can I somehow connect already installed bluetooth mic to this unit? I have functioning Toyota bluetooth system installed and can I have my steering wheel volume up down and radio controls functioning with this Sony unit?
You should be able to connect an existing bluetooth to the stereo unit.
nice car installation
Hey colin what android version you have 8.1 ?
the volume controls on the wheel keep working after that ?
Great video ! From where did you get the frame for this ?
Man, the autodimmer option works with you? What did i need to do to make it work?
Hello, what did you do with the reverse in cable? I assume that is the wire that tells the stereo to switch to cam mode... I will install it tomorrow but I have no idea where to connect that cable... @Colin Chilibeck
Leonardo Sanchez Vanegas I connected it to my reverse light power circuit at the rear of the car and ran a wire to the radio.
If you can wire it to your fuse block it will save you time.
Thanks for the video, I’m also interested in how your phone is mounted, does that required a phone case that mates up with the thing that’s mounted on dash?
Yes it’s a magnet
How do purchase this device? Can you talk me through as install?
Does this setup charge your phone once it is connected via USB?
Does the tuner presets allow both am and fm? My gmc does it (i.e. preset 1 is fm, preset 2 is am, preset 3 is fm, and it is surprisingly useful.
Brendan Harris no ot does not. I know what you mean as I work at a GM dealership. Most manufacturers don't do that, but it is a nice feature.
Hi can you play music from third party apps when connected via usb? RUclips for example
I am not sure...I will try to remember to test that.
I just installed mine recently (XAV-AX5000) and was getting bad radio reception until I connected the power antenna wires on each harness. The Rav4 requires power to the antenna. I noticed in your video you left the blue wires disconnected.
What year Rav4 do you have?
Why didn't you show how to put the head unit into the installation kit?
One question for ya bro...where did you find the trim piece for it?
Brandon Hartwell amazon.ca
Just search Rav4 double din trim.
Thank you for sharing this video. It was very informative. Have a couple of questions.
1. Do you still have a CD player mounted in it?
2. Can u switch from android to Apple car (I use an iPhone and my hubby has android)
3. What was the mount that u used to hold your cellphone?
Michelle Gregorio this model does not have a CD player. The next model does though.
Yes, you can switch between android auto and CarPlay, but the phone must be plugged in.
The mount is from amazon and I believe is called MPow magnetic phone mount.

Colin Chilibeck thank you so much
Hope there's someone out there who can help with an installation issue: I have the XAV AX100 which I need to connect to an Axxess LC-GMRC-01 harness. The problem is the head unit has one wire per speaker, while the harness itself has one +ve and -ve wire per speaker. Do I need some way to split the speaker wire coming out of the head unit? How do I "merge" the +ve and -ve wire connections?
You did not say what vehicle you are installing in. The LC-GMRC-01 only works with certain vehicles, per Metra's wiring instructions. www.metraonline.com/files/products/INSTLC-GMRC-01.pdf
What screen size is that Sony deck?
175,000 miles. Good for you!
Looks like a Canadian car, so only about 105,000 miles.
