- "MTHFR gene mutation." It's kind of a hotword, these days, and seems like something everyone and their second cousin has. But what does it mean in your body and lifestyle? Does it sentence you to some kind of terrible fate? Where does it come from and how do you address it?
Watch this week's episode of A Different Perspective to see Dr. Jesse Anderson cover all of this, breaking down the science so it's easy to understand and digest. He gives practical insights and tips into areas such as:
What is methylation: Dr. Jesse walks us through what methylation is and shows us a wide variety of conditions that improper methylation may lead to or exacerbate. He also shows us some links between epigenetics, embryonic development, and methylation.
What is MTHFR: A lot of people seem to have a mutation on this gene; just how prevalent is it? Dr. Jesse walks us through what the MTHFR gene and enzymes do, as well as how the mutation changes the methylation process.
A defective variant?: The body is programmed for health and wellness. A mutation doesn't change that - it just impacts how you ought to take care of yourself. A mutated version of the MTHFR gene doesn't mean your gene is defective, but may add additional details and nuance to your health journey - like foods it's more important that you eat. What are they?
Folate vs Folic acid: What are the differences between folate and folic acid? Which one should you be taking, and where can you find it?
In his Last 10%, Doc talks about the lack of women in most studies until most recently. He paints a picture about how hormones can create differences in a person, both physically, physiologically, and mentally, using the example of a patient he had that identified as transgender. We see, within a woman's cycle, how hormones can impact a person's thinking and appearance. Is it any wonder, with all the endocrine and health disruptors in today's day and age, that some people may not feel like the sex they are? Doc expands on the importance of testing and why it's not wise to go based off of symptoms, alone. It is important to assess a person's health care needs based upon that person's biology, not simply how they "feel."
