Will his ‘rejuvenation alternative’ beat ageing? | Dr Aubrey de Grey (SENS Foundation)

- We have a “respectable chance” in the foreseeable future of using the “rejuvenation alternative” to reach a point where someone’s age will not determined their health, according longevity expert Dr Aubrey De Grey.
The chief science officer at the SENS Research Foundation - a non-profit which funds scientific rejuvenation therapies - argues the way to increase human longevity is not to attack the pathologies of old age but rather to use a “common-sense maintenance approach”.
The biomedical gerontologist claims “the problem is that we’ve been trying to go after the health problems of old age with geriatric medicine all this time.”
“We’ve got to be more preventative,” he says.
“The maintenance approach says basically let’s actually let metabolism generate damage at the rate that it naturally does so, but then step in every so often and repair some of that damage, just eliminate it from the body, so that even though it is being generated it does not reach this pathogenic level of abundance,” he explains.
“Unlike pathology, this approach does make sense.”
De Grey has classified all the “damage” associated with ageing into seven categories.
This means, he says, we can describe a corresponding generic intervention that implements the common-sense maintenance approach.
He offers cell loss as an example of how his classification and associated maintenance approach works to tackle “damage” associated with age.
According to De Grey, as cells are lost and not replaced with ageing, the “obvious fix is stem cell therapy… to replace the cells the body is not replacing on its own.”
He continues to outline how through this “rejuvenation alternative” we are going to see “quite a big increase in longevity”.
De Grey was speaking at the second in a three-part series entitled ‘Debating Ageing: A Transdisciplinary Engagement Forum.
Also taking part in the lecture were Professor Emma Teeling, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, and Professor Liam Delaney, UCD School of Economics.
The ‘Debating Ageing’ series is jointly presented by The UCD Humanities Institute, the UCD Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland, the UCD Conway Institute, the UCD Institute for Discovery, the UCD Geary Institute, and the UCD HRB Ignite Connect Programme.
Dr. Aubrey de Grey is the biomedical gerontologist who researched the idea for and founded SENS Research Foundation. He received his BA in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and 2000, respectively.
He is Editor-in-Chief of Rejuvenation Research, is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association, and sits on the editorial and scientific advisory boards of numerous journals and organisations.

Is one of the most Caring, Intelligent, & Important people in the whole - wide World.
I'll be 62, October 2023. I went back to school in 2010 to do graduate work in Gerontology. I WISH I could have seen Dr. Aubrey de Grey speak, but never have. I think this guy is brilliant. I was hired (at USC) to work on the tail end of a 40+ year longitudinal study on Alzheimer's (a tragic cognitive disease). I was responsible for cognitive testing (and some gofer work being new in the field at 49 - lol). This guy is my hero as I've always had a fascination for longevity and immortality. I wrote a successful award-winning memoir in 2022 called "Alive After Dying" (not about life after death) and will be releasing book 1 of a sci-fi trilogy incorporating some of Dr. de Grey's theories called "Her Immortal Menagerie" literally this weekend (Sept. 2023). I would never have thought about releasing it if it hadn't been for this amazing man. Dr. de Grey just turned 60 on April 20, 2023. He delights in looking old. It's his modus operandi. :-)
Such promising technologies. Hopefully we will see them come to fruition soon, say 20 years, less than that even better. I want to be able to celebrate my sons' 500th birthdays :-)

There r many treatments for aging already and at the rate of progress it is very clear that we will achieve the LEV in our life time. Not sure about the analogy he makes of the human body & a car, I suspect that Sinclair is more on the right track. Cars are made of inanimate objects & don't have the capacity to self-repair damage, the human body does contain such mechanisms for self-repair & maintenance, which is where research should be focused, I suspect.
The repair mechanisms of the body are at the absolute core of what he's talking about. It's essentially augmenting those mechanisms, dealing with the areas where they're inefficient or ineffective . I think you should maybe watch some more of his talks or read the SENS website to get a grip of what he's actually saying.

This seemed like an updated version of the type of talk Aubrey gives to newcomers (to his work). This is not on the topic of direct anti-aging but I think related to it -- Today I saw a tv commercial for living donors for (human) liver transplantation. The end of the ad showed two people next to each other in hospital beds shaking hands. Wondering if anyone else on here knows about this? I have not yet researched this treatment.
Ray Kurzweil is involved with a company already 3d printing organs which he predicts ( and he is usually conservative) will be accessible within 5 years and with little chance of rejection as they use the person's own cells.
Anyone with enough money will be able to get these treatments very soon outside the US.

It's just amazing how the body ages so fast in just a few years. Aubrey has gotten really old now. God, aging never stops. It's just a never-ending process of decaying. @@increasemaximumlifespan2502 These therapies will start with senescent cell clearance in 2023. They go through about five years of testing which seems ridiculous when they are targeted specifically at the aging population. They would be administered in a hospital or clinic as they could be dangerous. I would take these when they become available. They will be like everything else, expensive then the price will drop over time. It will be interesting to see how countries with free medical treatment ( like the UK) treat these therapies. Senescent cells and mitochondria cause a lot of damage so going after these makes a lot of sense.

I'm certain of it because it's been over twenty years, and sens doesn't have a single treatment that reverses aging. Not one simple treatment. Peter Sellers, I'll be in a nursing home in twenty years, no hope for me. Aubrey wants to do too much to reverse aging. Replace organs, that in itself is scary. I'm 44 and already am feeling what aging entails. Honestly since hitting my fourties, I've literally been living on aspirins everyday. Plus I've lost people I've loved a lot. I have another aunt who is 68 and smokes like a chimney. She will probably be gone in her seventies. I'm sure you have kids and want to live. I don't, so I'm ready to die by fifty I'd say. I'm not afraid of death because I've been interested in the metaphysical for over twenty years. I know that we exist after death in some form or another. Whether it's reincarnation, heaven, hell that's all speculation until it happens to us personally. I'm leaning towards reincarnation since I've read a lot about it over the years. I know in my physical body I possess now that I will die one day. I'm just honestly more afraid of ending up in capable of taking care of myself in a nursing home. Betty White should have been 24 again, six years ago from him so called telomerse lengthening pill he's been coming up with for the past eight years. Now he has failed in his own right to reverse any aspects of human again. So he has jumped on the Elizabeth Parrish gene therapy bandwagon. He's even taken some credit for it in a recent video I've watched with him Jesus will walk on water again before he turns Betty White 24. He's 67 now, and looks every bit of it. MrCarcappa16, you're obviously very young and can't rationalize the difference of building something that has one day the capacity to fly, to actually reversing the accumulated damage done to a human body. These are two totally different accomplishments. The first one was feasible, the second one isn't. We lose everything with age, bones, skin, organs, hair, our capillaries get much smaller, blood flow is not as it was. My advice is enjoy your youth because it goes fast. This man isn't hasn't done anything in over twenty years but flap his gums. They have to keep up the charade so money keeps flowing in from investors. I'm 44, and dying of aging. Everyone over fourty is. As far as being much dumber then alcoholic Aubrey goes, he can't spell this, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. But seriously, aging will be the worst thing young people face. It's really painful.
What about telemerase induction using a viral vector delivery method? Or cas 9 gene editing? These are just several very promising and rapidly advancing methods to bring improved health and longer life to people. Exponential progress seems slow in the beginning...not much happens. 30 years ago this was the case. But when initial breakthroughs are made, the rate exponentially increases. The human genome project has enabled the biological sciences to be transformed into a information technology. We can now, and are more effectively able to manipulate our DNA as we can computer code. Look at the progress computers made since the 1950s. Imagine now that kind of exponential progress in biology. In 20 years we will most likely be able to reverse up to half of the accumulated damage we had received from aging. There are companies now, including Google's calico and bioviva that are working on these therapies.

@@revolrz22 I should have said geroprotectors. More evidence for their gero effects in humans than we have for lifespan extension bc no one has done the experiments yet. Lifespan extension has only been validated in animal models, but many of them are taken by life extensionist bc they have been heavily tested in humans against multiple different diseases. If Theranos can't come up with a simplified way to take human blood, this man sure as heck isn't coming up with therapies to reverse the decay of a whole body. There's no way you can take a seventy year old with all the damage accumulated over five decades, and revert them back to age 25. Everything changes about an individual in fifty years. Our heads get smaller or larger,. Ears and nose keep growing. Bone loss is rampant at that age. We shrink, can he give us back height? They can't even regrow a bald spot now.
