Great little review. It seems the "Primed for Grime" series can be hit-and-miss. I have a few of their railcars and they've been set up well for additional weathering work from the modeller. However, this locomotive seems odd; they've faded the grey but the yellow seems unchanged.
It would make more sense to me to have both colours faded to the same degree since if it's replicating fading, you'd want it on the whole unit. In addition, weathering and varnishes can darken the model slightly so I'll personally paint things a little light at the beginning so I don't get a light sink once I'm finished with the model. Again, I'd want the whole model lighter, not just the grey. On the Athearn Genesis "Primed for Grime" UP ....AC4400/ES44/Gevo/Dash-somethings (I get confused) they certainly faded the yellow on those units.
Well I'm sure with your skill you'll have no problem making it look amazing in the end :)

Thanks! You're right that the PfG ES44s were significantly faded. Almost too much in my opinion. The yellow became too cool and had almost a green tint. Needed to add some warmth to make it look realistic.

Does the loco's sound system include a guitar and drums??

The model is very nice but in doing the review you play music right when the locomotive starts to make noise and when you turn off the locomotive then you turn off the music it would be better not to have music maybe so that we can hear the locomotive

Thanks, James. I agree. That was an editing error on my part so I apologize for that. I hope that you still are able to hear the locomotive well enough depsite the music, but I will stay away from that in the future.

    Are the number boards lighted?

No, I do not think so. Just the headlights and ditch lights (front/rear)

In some ways, yes, as it is a lack of realism that could otherwise be modeled and it is a sweet feature. In my view, and others may disagree, it really isn't that big of a deal. For me, this locomotive will most likely always be running under well-lit conditions and lighted numberboards won't necessarily be super noticeable. For me, and I would be curious to get others thoughts on this, the most important features are reliable running, solid sound, and good paint/weatheirng. Anything beyond that and I think the returns are diminishing. Thoughts?

I don't care for lit number boards too much as they're not very noticeable. I've got them on an NS SD60 I run at the local club and I always forget to turn on the number board lights. Detail like etched metal grilles and see-through steps and solid slow speed operation are far more important to me.

Personally, I like the lights, and for the same price as other manufacturers, you’d think they would install that at the factory. Like you said, it’s not a huge deal, and I’m sure I could modify it and install my own if I wanted. The rest of the model looks and sounds great though! Nice review!
