Oddly enough, my mother would work lures like this on me when I was a little kid. When it was time for supper, she'd throw out a hot dog tied to a string into the back yard and within minutes she'd lure me into the house where upon she would tell me to clean up and get to the dinner table. Thanks as always for the great videos!

Beautiful video, I love watching the lure technique done properly it is just poetry. When I first started for some reason I found it really difficult and then one day it went so well my mentor had a tear in his eye and I still remember his words "You'll do nicely" and he took me for a beer and I never looked back. I've had many people cry when a falcon flies at them for the first time. You can feel perfectly ready until it's time to do the real thing. The pressure can be massive if you don't learn to go with the flow!

Thank you Amy for taking us into your world, be it for ever such a few minutes. Apart from your expertise where it concerns your work as a falconer, the camera work is so impressive. I hope you know how great it is that through your eyes we get a small sense of what your days are like. I had no inkling of what it means to be a falconer. Living in The Netherlands I do not think I will ever get the chance to get close to this kind of work. Great job explaining things Amy. I’ve been a falconer for close to 40 years,....most of my life. I think it’s hard for folks outside of our community to fully grasp how playful a falcon can be and how much they enjoy chasing a lure(not all do,...but most) I’ve been focused on flying passage Merlin’s for the last 10 years.....and Merlin’s LOVE the lure! Working with Owls and Kestrels as a kid was such an honour i did'nt fully appreciate at the time but these videos make me realise i would give everthing up tomorrow to do this everyday.

Very informative and easy to follow, Amy! Over the last 43 years, I've seen many a bird injured or killed by bad technique whilst swinging and delivering the lure! Just about 2 weeks ago, a young lad who I taught to train and fly a Harris hawk killed his Lannerette. My health is not too good at the moment, so I couldn't teach him.I advised him to at least go on a short lure course. But he was adamant and confident enough to dive in head first! Unfortunately, he has paid the price for it! Once again, Amy, great video! Take care and best wishes.

Really really good advice, to be honest this was the part I struggled the most with my kestrel but practice makes perfect and comes eventually.
Exactly keep practising and you will get there! My early days of lure swinging were..hilarious :P

Had the opportunity to visit Dorset Falconry Center in the summer of 2019 and I was amazed by these incredible birds and the bond a falconer creates with them. My best friend has worked with Peregrines in Manitoba, Canada and Ive always been amazed by it. So much respect for the work you do for your birds.
Also for anyone into photography, you can get some incredible shots during a fly session!

I'm hoping to get a falcon after the passing of my old kestrel, and this video has helped me a great deal in getting the practice and skills needed to lure fly the bird. I love this video because you explain how to do it in stages, and unlike some other videos I've seen, how to throw the lure forwards and retract it for a pass.

Amazing skill your really passionate about your birds and they are so lucky to have such an amazing keeper. It takes dedication and skill to use a lore properly. The way you relate to the birds is amazing to watch . I've always been fascinated by birds of prey since I was a kid.

Weirdly enough in my personal experience if you really foul up doing it live with a small, agile falcon they'll suddenly sense weakness and pull out their A game.
Fairly often as well after they've caught you the next flight is more enthusiastic so I actually try and mix it up and let the bird "catch me out" instead of recalling it to the lure.
Of course you can't do it all of the time or you could lose the instant recall to the lure, which is your biggest safety feature when flying a falcon to the lure.
LOLOL I immediately see myself doing this 😂
