Chemistry experiment 47 - Sublimation of Iodine

  • At room temperature, elemental iodine is a black-bluish solid.
    When heated, solid iodine sublimates and enters the gas phase.
    Iodine got its name from the Greek word ‘ἰοειδής’, meaning ‘purple’. Indeed, iodine vapor has a beautiful purple color.
    Regaining solid iodine from iodine vapor can be achieved by cooling down iodine vapor on a cold surface.
    Beautiful iodine crystals are formed.
    Hazards:
    Iodine is toxic

    THANOS GAS

  • @utalis47
    @utalis47 4 года назад +14

    it melts into a liquid at 110 degrees and vaporizes into a gas at that temperature and pressure.Increasing the pressure will keep it in a liquid state. 5 grams of iodine heated in a sealed test tube(increasing pressure) will turn into a liquid and stay that way for a few seconds before boiling off into a gas. This result may also be seen if you use a larger amount of iodine,or a pressure chamber.

    I have a few questions! first, how sturdy are these crystals? can I repeat this process to get more, bunched, and thicker crystals? how long does this take? could I freeze, say, an animal skull and get the same effect, it would it not stay cold long enough? last, are they toxic after forming?

  • @nikan4now

    NO wait! Sublimation is when solid goes into gas directly.This is not happening when you heat iodine. It goes into liquid then it goes into vapour. Look at the phase diagram at 1atm. However, at room temperature and 1atm without heating some sublimation happens cause idodine's vapour pressure is low.

    • @EchoAbenstern
      @EchoAbenstern 5 лет назад +1

      1) Get iodine (it doesn’t have to be spherical shape), a beaker, and a round bottom flask (you could use different containers if you want but that’s what was used here, so long as you have something that can cover the top and hold ice)
      2) Put the solid iodine into a beaker, and fill the rbf with ice.
      3) Put the beaker on a hot plate in an area that has good ventilation (iodine is corrosive and an oxidizer) and heat the beaker.
      4) Once you see vapor coming off the iodine, put the rbf on top of the beaker, and allow for the iodine to sublime for a while.
      5) Crystals. Avoid touching with your hands as mentioned before they are not good for skin.
