Chemistry experiment 47 - Sublimation of Iodine

- At room temperature, elemental iodine is a black-bluish solid.
When heated, solid iodine sublimates and enters the gas phase.
Iodine got its name from the Greek word ‘ἰοειδής’, meaning ‘purple’. Indeed, iodine vapor has a beautiful purple color.
Regaining solid iodine from iodine vapor can be achieved by cooling down iodine vapor on a cold surface.
Beautiful iodine crystals are formed.
Hazards:
Iodine is toxic - Наука
when it's solid it looks like blueberries
eat them
Dont! You'd shit purple
drifter13 More like you'd go to the hospital for iodine poisoning.
U wouldn’t just shit purple u would have a stomach ache then shit purple
Wait... I thought they were blue Berrys
Anyone here from onljne work at school
is anyone *not*
Me !
Yes me you are from which school our Teacher opted this video as here is a good demonstration

THANOS GAS
it melts into a liquid at 110 degrees and vaporizes into a gas at that temperature and pressure.Increasing the pressure will keep it in a liquid state. 5 grams of iodine heated in a sealed test tube(increasing pressure) will turn into a liquid and stay that way for a few seconds before boiling off into a gas. This result may also be seen if you use a larger amount of iodine,or a pressure chamber.
Beautifully executed video. Thank you for the subtitles.
ㅇㅈ
Still useful tho😢
0:08 At first I thought they were blueberries
Same
Science is so beautiful...(when its practical😜
true
I miss my old science classes, lol. Never get to do cool stuff like this in person much anymore.
I know! Stuff like this would have been so cool!
this is chemistry and it's not cool.
... yeah its definetely not cool well did u know chemistry is a part of science???
Man I just get assigned a page and that’s it no cool stuff
*cough* online school
Hey dude one of my online classes used you're video
why do people dislike the video. They got what they wanted
Hows the guy who unliked this video
hes fine
Hi, I'm wondering if I can use a snippet of this video for our college's (Labuan Matriculation College) video production for online teaching (due to covid19). It is not for commercial purpose. We will credit you in the video.
awesome video!!! ill show this to my class
I have a few questions! first, how sturdy are these crystals? can I repeat this process to get more, bunched, and thicker crystals? how long does this take? could I freeze, say, an animal skull and get the same effect, it would it not stay cold long enough? last, are they toxic after forming?
They would be as soft as the upper laayers of ice, you can scratch them off with your fingers like dust :)
Iodine is my favorite type of element
yo how's your gas?
Why Is Chemistry so beautiful😮💜💜
Great video, thanks.
What if our hands stands above like the ice? Will our hands be covered with those crystals?
thanks
for the video
i had to write the observation
schools stuff
That's awesome but nobody explains how long it takes to leave the round bottom flask on top and how long it takes to form crystals?
Who is doing this for Chemistry?
If it's crazy but it works, it ain't crazy!
genuinely thought they were blueberries oops
Good Subscribed 👍👍👍
Whos here from home learning
Yep
We have to do this table of observations I dont even understand
Ye lol
May i know how long it will take for the crystals to form?
above the surface of the iodine they will start forming within a few seconds and up the sides of the beaker.
Yes, but is there any residue left on the outside of the flask?
Shouldn't you be wearing protective gloves for lab work? (Just for good practice and as an example to the kids.)
I've asked this question before when I had my first lab and my lab professor/manager said that it risks the chance of dropping any glass instruments because most of the time your hands will be wet. Maybe, my professor never thought of gloves with traction tips.
@@elisei01 Yeah, screw the next generation. We should end the world right now and become extinct :D
when it was purpl balls. !!!! 👍👏👏👏👌👌good well done. 😇👌👏👌
So this is the power of Purple Haze...
If they are dissolved in distilled water what is the way to get them back to solid state but more like they look like at 0:13 and not as crystals.
that was beautiful
Science is best
How do I deal with the condensation on the top flask? It just drips water back into the bottom beaker and I never collect any iodine.
usually this would be done in a lab with controlled humidity.
Amazing ❤
NO wait! Sublimation is when solid goes into gas directly. This is not happening when you heat iodine. It goes into liquid then it goes into vapour. Look at the phase diagram at 1atm. However, at room temperature and 1atm without heating some sublimation happens cause idodine's vapour pressure is low.
What is happening in this video is nilation (solid evaporation) since it is below the melting point.
How long it will take?
How long does it take for the fumes to stop producing
iodine in solid form does still release purple vapour at room temperature, so I'm assuming never
Is iodine toxic? Will it be safe operating in an open circumstance?
We have a note in our book warning of poisonous iodine vapor
That's amazing I love chemic😆
Beautiful 😍
I wish they did an asmr of scraping the crystals off
But good video! Thanks.
I like the experient
The birds sound is beautiful
Is that potassium per manganette
The problem is...
How r u Gonna get the solid iodine crystals down?
Just scrape them back down into the beaker
My brother did this for a science project about iodine once
Wonderful
good video nice thanks
Very interesting 😐😉
excellent !
This is not sublimation! This is condensation.
I hope this was recorded in a well-ventilated room and while wearing a gas mask.
Is there no leftover
From liquid to solid, interesting
Anyone else here because their chemistry teacher cant teach so you are trying to teach yourself 👁👄👁
damn that ice turned into terraria underground hallow :skull:
Good work
So how do you get liquid iodine?
Ok... but how do u do what u did?
1) Get iodine (it doesn’t have to be spherical shape), a beaker, and a round bottom flask (you could use different containers if you want but that’s what was used here, so long as you have something that can cover the top and hold ice)
2) Put the solid iodine into a beaker, and fill the rbf with ice.
3) Put the beaker on a hot plate in an area that has good ventilation (iodine is corrosive and an oxidizer) and heat the beaker.
4) Once you see vapor coming off the iodine, put the rbf on top of the beaker, and allow for the iodine to sublime for a while.
5) Crystals. Avoid touching with your hands as mentioned before they are not good for skin.
It's kind of like an under block
is iodine a toxic gas ?( perhaps because it is in the same group as chlorine?)
Yes, i think
Mind blowing
POV: You came here because your teacher told you to watch this video
Frr
Wouaw, it's magic
No, wow it's science "i just had to say it"
Nice purple gas
how about pink crystal ?
Nice 👍 👍
When no mans sky generates a purple planet:
superb
merci pour la vidéo cadeau pouce bleu XD
This is cool
so its a chemical or physical change? ?o?
BookFanZ YT Physical change. The iodine is just going from solid to gas to solid. It is not reacting with any other chemicals.
how much are they worth
who thinks solid iodine look like blueberries?
can someone explain why the solid iodine went from dull to shiny crystals after it was sublimated :o
It’s because there wasn’t any mold to give it a shape, so it took a random shape, as water when it gets solid without any mold :)
@@queencarrot403 awesome!! Thank you!
What is the function of this iodine???
In science , iodine is used to stain plant cells when looking at them through a microscope to get a better view of the cell and the structures within : e.g. the nuclei.
is this deposition ?? just askin
This is sublimation, the opposite of deposition... Sublimation is going from a solid to a gas deposition is going from gas to solid
wow 😍
Robert Medrano was here.
Thanx

Hello I saw your comment you put on hello it is rana you said piper was not good togavin I don’t think so piper definitely deserves enything I love piker so yeah I love piper way way way more than gavin just saying👅🗣
Holy sh..
So directly from gas to solid, no liquid state at all. F*** me
