I went to an aikido class. (Mind you, I'm already a black belt in karate and I do Muay Thai as well) So it was only for experience. I got put to the side because I attacked too fast and hit my partners face. I don't know if it's the style or just that particular school but for me aikido is done. It's beatifull too watch but I must raise, as many others, questions around its effectiveness.
Aikido is not seen in tournaments because it is forbidden. There are no attacking moves. The founder Ueshiba, laid down these principles almost 100 years ago, and they have not been violated.
Our sensei taught as the aikijitsu techniques along with the aikido ones, so that we can choose if we want to break the hand or just make it a joint lock. Awesome, eh?
"A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor's cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. "It's overfull! No more will go in!" the professor blurted. "You are like this cup," the master replied, "How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup."
"Effectiveness" is relative. have you ever been taken on a throw that you weren't expecting? It hurts and people have had their shoulders dislocated because they can't breakfall worth a crap. Its not the art that makes it weak, its the practioner.
It may look like it, But i know first hand how effective a defensive technique it is! I do a lot of freefight tourneys, and basically, people who practice Aikido redirects the energy from your attacks back onto yourself... Pain!
@PEC00 My Father always told me dont hold back because people in the street wont when they attack you.. I think you get more out of training if you are attacking for real because you can push yourself and do the technique without even thinking of where to move or what to do which is what you want as it is a form of self defence.
My partner was the most experienced student in attendence that class. According to him, he did aikido for 8 years. If you can't defend yourself after 8 years then there is something wrong. Now I'm not saying it's the aikido, it could be the teacher as well (there are lousy karate and muay thai shools as well) but personally I will not take that art again.
why dont the target looks like they are resisting instead of "help Jumping" into the move. doesnt look real..especially in the middle part of the video. when he graps the both arms, and threw. dude looked like he jumped. most attackers would have stood and tried to pull away...? just thought i would mention it.
i took aikido once and yes the technique might seem no force to do and...its true aikido uses force against the opponet also joints to throw with great force...also aikido balance and coordination is high cause they must develope their ki or Universal POWER
did you tried it ? i know that aikido is very helpfull against all martial arts but it's not the aim of aikido to be better as other martial arts is a kind of philosophy and kind of a way to live
It's not fixed at all. Aikido in the hands of the right practitioner is an excellent and practical form of self defence, and yes it can stand against Jiu-jitsu and Greco-Roman. I know because I do both and one of my good friends beat me using Aikido while we sparred. As far as real fights...What do you think police officers use to subdue unruly arrestees? Yes, they incorporate a lot of Aikido along with other forms of weaponless/nonlethal techniques of other martial styles.
to K1llum1nat1, i wasn't hating on aikido, i respect it. it's just not that exciting to watch for me. everyone's entitled to an opinion. everyone else, shut the hell up and relax. damn, it's not that serious lol
Its still set up! these people have practised this as a demo and that's what it is... a good demo but it is not spontaneous its just good choreography. Believe me I know! There are no real attacks in the whole demo... every one knows what is going to happen next thats why it looks impressive to the untrained eye!
actually if you go to the Inosanto Academy in California, you can learn it directly from Danny Inosanto. You probably don't even know, but he was one of the bosses in "Game of Death" and trained with Bruce Lee himself. anyways...if you actually think Chuck Norris is a bad-ass, you're just lame lol. oh yeah, and an 80 yr.old Gracie could take on any 80 yr.old that practices Aikido. You obviously don't practice aikido because you're not quite promoting "harmony of spirit."
hmm bad thing ... this loud music .. the spotlights .. why? for what ? thats not the Meaning of an Aikido Demonstration this is just .. brr.. not beautifull
I liked that video... good technique.
Respect attracts respect. A true martial artist respect all martial arts. It begins with respect & end with respect. Onegaeshimasu ;-)

"Aikido is 90% atemi." --Morihei Ueshiba Surely, you've come across this within the past 18 years, but just in case.

wow.. 3:15 he takes down 5 people in 3 seconds. Truly amazing.
amazing...
Omg awsome
Aikido masters should do more practice sessions with other martial arts such as kung fu, so other people would believe in it.

Too set up for my liking... no real spontaneity. Bullshit if you ask me. Would be better if done against some real attacks and real resistance!
this is probably the weakest martial art there is. jeet kune do is much more effective and interesting to watch
