The origins of Juneteenth date back to June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially freed slaves in Confederate states on January 1, 1863. Due to the slow spread of news and minimal presence of Union troops to enforce the proclamation, many enslaved people in Texas were unaware of their freedom until Granger's arrival.
General Order No. 3, delivered by Granger, declared that all slaves were free and that there would be an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves. This moment marked the final realization of the promise of emancipation in the farthest reaches of the Confederacy.
