English has become a kind of lingua franca though. The main influence on popular music has clearly been from America in the last century and the same also goes for film. With that kind of international influence english is bound to be used more. And any group seeking international success is bound to use it.

Actually, only Agnetha, Benny's keyboards, and a drum machine can be heard on this song. Bjorn and Frida did not participate in this one. The very last song "ABBA" recorded.

This is such a masterpiece. When I first heard this song I was immediately transported I'm imagining that I'm this woman narrating my everyday routine and suddenly I realized how much I miss that boring life. Watching from the Philippines, ABBA is massively popular in my country up to this day, their music is ingrained in Filipino pop culture😊

This was the last song recorded by them. Agnetha sang alone in the dark. Both couples had split up by then. When she was done the tech said she hung up the headset and walked out into the light. He said he knew ABBA was over.

I fell in love with it when I heard it for the very first time. It's the kind of music that makes us see within our minds exactly the situation she is narrating to us. Also the song brings us that dark atmosphere that makes us a little frightened inside. Only a few artists can do such a thing with such a high perfection as ABBA did. It's a kind of music that makes us fly within our thoughts when it is well understood. It's a masterpiece of the masterpieces. I just can't stop loving this song.

It was almost shocking how different this sound was from "classic" ABBA at the time but even at 13 I knew it was a work of brilliance the first time I heard it on the radio.
Such a pity they broke up then.

My favourite ABBA song. I think at the time it wasnt appreciated but it is now considered one of their best. There are lots of theories about the story behind the song and being a fan of Scandi Noir books and tv I go for the darker meaning, I think she is a ghost describing her last day alive and it was death that came to visit the following day in whatever manner that could be, accident, suicide, murder.

a ghost? haha it's not it;s about a woman describing her daily routine, she sees a guy she likes at the station and they have an affair but it doesn;t last, he put some meaning in her life but now sh;es back to her old routine again. At the end of the song she describes how she snuggled up for yet another night, so she's alive!

It’s actually one of my favourite all songs of all time, and it was actually their very last recording. Of corse I’m a huge fan because I’m an Aussie. Thanks for sharing this one guys, this fan gives it 10/10. It’s their original swan song and was way before it’s time.

The production and arrangement is extremely artistic and professional. Only synth (Yamaha GX-1) and snare drums plus background chorus and backing vocals that slowly rise tension. Melody is all alone from singer. Perfect.

A masterpiece, that has grown to become a favourite for many ABBA fans and admirers! A fantasic song with the haunting atmosphere and synth sound, and Agnethas interpretation of it! In the UK 2 different polls show This song has been voted the 3rd best ABBA song with Dancing Queen 2nd and The Winner Takes It All 1st. When it first came out on 82 I was what is this, but it kept growing on me and it is now one of my favourites. If you want to see a darker side of ABBA then The visitors Album it the place to go

If you haven´t heard the story before: This was the last song they recorded together - so they tell - before breaking up for... ... well, 40 years. Agnetha was singing it sitting down. In comple darkness. After finishing her job she left the studio. After that: 40 years of silence.

This has always been one of my favorite ABBA songs, and I think it's become a favorite among many ABBA fans. It didn't do well in the charts, but at the time the public had grown tired of ABBA (and they had grown tired of each other). If they had continued, I'm sure they would've gone further into the direction of synth pop.
If I had the means, this song would've been on my ABBA top 10 for you guys to react to. I had a top 10 in mind of songs that showcase their variety in styles. It would look something like this:
- Disillusion (1973)
- Watch Out (1974)
- My Mama Said (1974)
- My Love, My Life (1976)
- I'm a Marionette (1977)
- Eagle (1977)
- Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (1979)
- The Way Old Friends Do (1980)
- I Let the Music Speak (1981)
- The Day Before You Came (1982)
Other songs I had considered are I've Been Waiting for You (1975), Arrival (1976), Tiger (1976), The Name of the Game (1977), Summer Night City (1978), I Have A Dream (1979), Chiquitita (1979), and The Visitors (1981).

Great choice of songs! About the same ones I would have picked as well. My mama said is another one those early and less well known tracks that grow on you after listens, and a really interesting contrast to the visitors era tracks in terms of range and instrumentation.

@@guyinnyc1 Thanks. Yes, their early work gets overlooked, but they experimented a lot which resulted into some really interesting songs. My Mama Said is definitely a hidden gem. It's the closest they got to R&B, and something you'd never expect from them.
From back in the early years, Hey Hey Helen is one of my favourites.
This song is so beautiful & yet underrated, but they still retained that magic up until to the very end. We in the Uk did a poll that was shown on TV, asking for their favourite ABBA songs & this came at number 3, a surprise to many, but not to me. It’s my favourite ABBA song after The Winner Takes It All

It grew on me some, still not in my upper echelon of their stuff but the beauty of music.

Oh WOW, you got it. This isnt a woman detailing her boring mundane life prior to meeting a man who turns her life around for the better, it is indeed a haunting. This voice is meant to sound ordinary, like it comes from the grave. Something bad did happen. It was never appreciated at the time by the music press or the majority of fans but personally, its one of their very best for me. You have to remember from 1972 ABBA had progressed on every front, production, arrangement, musicianship, vocals, lyrics..

This was never originally on The Visitors. It first appeared on the compilation, ABBA : The First Ten Years (1982). Re-issues of CD The Visitors added the track, alongside Under Attack.

I think this song has gained more traction as time went on and been re appraised as a great track. Two years after it was released a group called Blancmange did a cover that actually charted higher in the UK than the original ABBA release. Interestingly I think this song may have been analysed and had more written about it than any other ABBA track.

I remember when this song came out and being in absolute awe. Few other song writers, composers and or singers could pull off what essentially is a mundane chronical of everyday life and do it as successfully. It may be that some traditional ABBA fans did not enjoy this offering, perhaps because it is a somewhat departure from the expected. Listen again and again too enjoy the complexities.

Why doesn't anyone catch the meaning of this song? What she is describing is a routine life without direction, day by day hopelessly doing the same thing until the love or her life showed up. The word "hunting" is right on because is like a she took a magic potion when the guy showed up and her life change. The funny thing is that she sings it in a sad mode, when presumably the story is being told after the guy showed up and her life was in order. No, it may appear like the relationship would have ended in disaster, based on the way she sings the song. Yet, her life as described in the song is quite gray and plain. It is a very mysterious song and this is why I like it!. It is a departure from the usual ABBA song which usually has a SAD story but an upbeat tone. This is a sad tone but an upbeat message: "my life was sad and pathetic before the love of my life showed up" seem to be Agnetha's massage. I think that perhaps it was a confusing song and that is why people might not have liked it so much. Agnetha's performance is masterfull, though. Only her voice breaks the monotony of the underlying tune. I just love the song, perhaps for that reason alone. But the monotous bird-like tune in the background sound is unique IMHO.

There's a theory among fans that something sinister happened to the protagonist in the song, that she was murdered by her lover, her ordinary life came to an end when she met him. Bjorn neither confirm nor deny this in interviews. Btw i love the synths in this track,definitely we heard a different side of the band & this is their swan song

Speaking of ABBA albums, I think The Visitors and ABBA The Album are their best.
I Believe in Angels was a great track on The Album that was later covered by a Christian singer in America without one word changed.

'Move On', 'Hole In Your Soul' 'Take A Chance On Me', 'I"m A Marionette" , 'The Name of The Game' and 'Eagle' are varied and excellent, each in their own way. I also think their 1975 self titled album was great. SOS, 'I've Been Waiting For You', So Long, Mamma Mia, and 'Bang-A-Boomerang'. The video for that one is pure joy. You'll find hidden gems on all their albums, sometimes even better than the hits.

They part at the airport and it's back to the usual seventh cigarette at half past two and the latest episode Dallas with a Chinese takeaway in the evening after that. That song was not released with the Visitor on the LP but later when the released the album on CD. In fact that was the last song they recorded as part of the album following the Visitor and it was so emotional that they recorded it in full darkness and once the record is done Agnatta left the room and never returned as the band disbanded right after that. Under attack, You owe me one, Cassandra and I am the city are the only known songs recorded for that undone last album. Execpt of the later, they were released on 45 singles.

You are missing "Just like that". It was entirely recorded for this undone last album, but Benny refuses to release the full version.
@@cserranoweb They didn't release it then because they were not satisfied with the final version. I heard part of "Just Like That" and found it so good. Looks like they are perfectionists. Just a Notion is a good example. But Just Like That will never be release Benny and Bjorn said so.

@@cserranoweb Hey Who knows maybe, Bjorn and Benny are preparing a new ABBA release of recordings they never released and all fully recorded. With today's technology. Just a Notion is a good example again.
The song alone could be interpreted as follows. The singer had a very mundane life. She fell into a "rut" and didn't even realize it. But she was telling us directly that this was BEFORE "you" (he) came. If it wasn't for the minor chords and melancholy mood, it could be an "upbeat" story. BUT the accompanying video tells a different story. The "man" who "came" was shone leaving.(She was dropping him off at the station or Airport). So she was "back" to where she started. Both "literally" and "emotionally". Thanks for your great reactions.

Actually what has probably added to the fascination and intrigue around this song is that it never has been explained by Bjorn.
Everyone is free to come to their own conclusions or make up their own theory.
And just perhaps, he wrote it just for that.
Maybe he had no specific idea in mind either when he was writing this song of what happened on "the day after you came"?

Although, what we DO know is that whoever 'came' has now gone. The affair/romance did not work out. Bjorn, Benny and Agnetha have subsequently admitted this. Benny has indicated that this is what he was trying to suggest with the haunting, minor keys.
How do you know Benny and Bjorn wrote it? Normally people would explain a song. The truth is Abba didn;t write all those songs, they were written by various global composers, think about it, most musicians can only write maybe 2 or 3 good songs in their lifetime but Abba had hit after hit after hit, Benny and Bjorn are not geniuses, i love Abba but don;t be deluded into thinking they wrote all those songs. That;s not how the music industry works.
I've never known any Abba fan to dislike this song. In fact, most polls reveal it as one of the fan favorites. However, i realise that people from USA have a different relationship with Abba music, to Europeans.
Well the thing you have to remember is this is the FIRST time we have ever heard it, sometimes that perspective is forgotten and people can't understand how couldn't just "love" a song.

You were right to pick up something dark and menacing about this song. A lot of people mistakenly think it's about a girl whose mundane life is magically transformed by the arrival of a new lover the next day, but in truth the story does not have a happy ending, and the minor keys and haunting synths are hinting at this, as does the song's official video. Bjorn, Benny, and Agnetha have all subsequently admitted this. Basically, her life was mundane and boring until 'he' came, but she didn't really know it, and she was just plodding along in ignorance. However, after he came, and the ensuing love affair ultimately ended in failure, she became aware of how meaningless her life was, and was thrown into a seemingly existential crisis. ABBA really had embraced the dark side on this, their last recording. Legend has it that Agnetha recorded her vocals with the studio lights dimmed, and when she had finished, she hung up her headphones and left the building. The studio engineer says that he knew then that this was the end of ABBA.

The video did not give me the impression that the relationship failed. The "Man" HAD to leave. She brought him to the "station". They seemed heartbroken, but on good terms.

This is a great track by a more mature thinking ABBA. Fans didn't warm up to it when it first came out because they were immersed in the ABBA "Pop" sound. Many of them have a better opinion about it now & include it in their list of favorites. Song suggestion: "Honey Honey".

It's a high energy track from beginning, After each chorus it revs up again, Pays homage to the oldies (Ooh bop bop bop), Great vocals, A heavenly layer of orchestration comes in to hold everything together. A life of routine and boredom before he came into her life. and she never noticed it was routine and boring,. and therefore the details are very mundane BEFORE he comes into her life. The melody is actually a bit haunting especially on the instrumental parts.

Never heard this song. As I listened to it sounds like a low key tune. I agree Trey that it is haunting and mysterious and I agree Shawn that it sounds like they are telling a story.. For me the melody was not that strong. I would say an average song. Trey,your rating is a strong 7.5 and Shawn, your rating at 6.75 is at the level I rate this, a 6.5 to 6.75.
This song is in minor keys. The latter songs of ABBA have the dark, subdued themes yet rich and very very masterfully done. You gotta listen to I let the Music Speak, The Visitors and Should I laugh or cry. Those are so marvelous songs.

This one has become something of a cult favourite (maybe because it was the last song for ABBA), but I agree with you on the melody. I'm not as moved by it as some other Agnetha vocals, or some other Benny Andersson melodies before or after.
