I always just pictured the step-back to be the Slig adjusting his stance from the continuous recoil. It makes sense since firing the bullets one at a time doesn’t have the same recoil as holding it down continuously. Hence no stepping back. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah, I've pinned a comment someone let me know apparently in the Abe’s Oddysee strategy guide Lorne says the slig steps back due to recoil so you're absolutely right, I didn't think of that. xD
I looked this up on the oddworld wiki, the blitz packer was turned into a weapon not because of how dangerous it was, but because of the actual drink. Apparently, the soul storm brew was absolutely awful after the events of Abe’s exoddus, so they decided to repurpose it as a weapon. Also I can imagine why it is so dangerous, it is after all a metal can being shot like a bullet which would cause massive bruising at the least while possibly causing bone damage, i would imagine.
I'm not sure about the newer games, but in odyssey/exoddus the name 'blunderbuss' with the visual/performance differences makes me believe that the Sligs are armed with 'primitive' shotguns modified to fire like a machine gun just to save some cash, something I could definitely see the Glukkons doing to pinch pennies.
*British person looks at a pump action shotgun* "Is this an 'assault rifle'?" Blunderbusses were wide bore muzzle loaders (called such as they were loaded by the muzzle or open end of the barrel) that featured flared muzzles to facilitate faster and more hurries loading. They were often less accurate and this lead to users often pouring random small objects from small musket balls to nails to rocks, creating an early and rudimentary form of scatter (or shot) guns as increasing the amount of projectiles increased the odds of hitting something. These were popular among sailors as ship to ship combat more often than not included boarding actions and quick, bloody close combat where fast loading and the ability to fire quickly and worry less about aiming would be ideal. Bringing us back to why a shotgun would be called a blunderbuss.
3:20 Tracer rounds. Irl they’re usually only like 1 out of every five bullets are tracers. That way a soldier could see where their bullets are going and assist with aiming. I honestly could see the cartel using tracers for their sligs. Since they apparently have poor eyesight might give them less reason to miss their targets.
It's funny how Oddworld lore is so mysterious in many cases. As a result, a lot of it is almost myth-like in status. It's kind of fascinating really, I don't think I know of another game or franchise that's quite created this effect around it's intellectual property, albeit I think Oddworld has done it entirely unintentionally, yet it somehow makes the lore more attractive, in my opinion anyway.
Oddworld was a big part of my childhood, too, so it's great to watch all of your videos and see what you have chosen to intently focus on - some of the topics are pretty niche, so it's really cool to see that someone has paid so much attention to the smaller details of this game and has invested so much time to explore them! These videos are good value, thanks a lot for going to all the effort to de-mystify some of the Oddworld lore - keep up the great work :D
Thank you very much, I appreciate your kind words immensely! :) It's amazing how much lore there is when it comes to Oddworld and I used to read so much about it when I was a child. I generally base a lot of my videos on things I vaguely remember from years ago that interested me but there's so much lore that no matter how in-depth I go with it there's always so much more so I try to narrow it down I guess haha. I hope I do as good a job as I can at de-mystifying the lore but I know there's so much more I could put in and stuff I miss out, etc, but hopefully it's a somewhat good documentation of my perspective of Oddworld I guess haha! Thanks again! :D
I think the actual reasons for Sligs taking a step back in Oddysee and Exoddus, while firing continuesly is to avoid players spamming endlessly. Otherwise there would no challenge in the sections where slogs are spawning in waves, for example. Because none possed Sligs doesn't do it. They'll fire untill you're dead or move out the way.
Slaughter School Kindergarten Teacher: "The guns of the Sligs go "pew-pew pew" all the long, long daaaaaa-" The teacher stepped backwards off of a nearby cliff from "recoil," greatly entertaining all the lil' Sliggies.
The slig can also shoot one bullet moving backwards hold the shoot button shoot right but move the sliig left and it will shoot one bullet at a time while moving backwards until you hit a wall or a dead end and it will constantly shoot bullets.
Did not know the sligs' guns were called Blunderbuss. You learn something new every day I suppose. One of my favorite parts of Oddworld is all the detail. Even though we don't have a new game quite yet, there's still so much to learn and think about, it's hard to get bored with a series that's so rich in lore and characterization.
Yeah, it makes me wonder why they haven't released other stuff like comics, or videos or that sort of thing. There's so much they could do with Oddworld. :)
I would personally love to see the Blitz packer make it's appearance in the upcoming Oddworld: Soulstorm game. Using these as a possessed slig to knock out foes and render them drunk could be a nice alternative to shooting lethal bullets, ones that would clear the area in a more efficient manner sure but also ruin Abe's karma should there be a lot of ennemies to take out at once.
That's a good point! Abe's karma has always been affected by killing his own kind but never the enemies! Considering Soulstorm aims to be able to be completed without killing a single enemy, that could be a good thing for them to put in it.
sligs can sometimes reload in the original OW, it is very rare they do this. In the second game if the Glukkon gives them a command that confuses them they'll do the reload animation as well! its different from the step back.
Man, wish Big Bro Slig had an actual shield in the game. It'd make a him quite a bit more unique instead of simply beeing a heavier type with more firepower.

3:27 They're called tracers. Interestingly, in the real world only certain kinds of bullets, called tracer rounds, have this visual element. Very realistic games like stalker don't have any tracers (no the gauss rifle doesn't count, even if does it have a trail as that's a trail and tracers are much shorter). I think tracer rounds are used to help show someone where they're shooting. Which makes their use in games like Munch's Odyssey not only funny but ironic. Because A.
