I met Mahmoud-Abdul Rauf/Chris Jackson at the ICNA relief convention and he is such a great man and he could’ve been in the hall of fame after I saw him play in his 40’s
FINALLYYYY Mahmoud was always underrated for heat he did and the statement he made before anyone else. I'm glad at least someone is recognizing him fir what he did back in the day man. Took real courage and I got respect for him. Thanks Mike!
Who remebers when mike was original? Watch nbagotgametv to see a video on the exact same topic but posted weeks ago....its not the first time mike posted videos on topics that have been posted just a couple days prior...atleast give credit to ppl copying their ideas for videos....kinda sad to see this development as i subsribed when his channel had around 50.000 subscribers and actually original content was posted....
My popz told me this story years ago, it's good to see someone brought it to light. And my manz still be hooping, he played in the Big 3 league and played solid ball.
Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was such a great player. Shame he got shunned so hard for something he believed so hard in. I guess freedom of speech was dead even in the 90's...
Bullshit. Look up his stats. He was horrible his last 5 seasons and even in his best years, his shooting was only slightly above average. He was just a high volume chucker.
Sam Henderson I'm happy to say, if your profile pic is you, you're wise well beyond your years. You already have a better assessment of this than all the flag fanatics on here. It's elementary: the "freedom" these patriots are always raving about only applies if you're expressing an opinion that parallels their own. If you dissent, you're un-american.
Great video Mike. Not enough people know about Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, his career at LSU was absolutely legendary. I know last year he played in Ice Cube's 3v3 league and was one of if not the best player in the league at 50 years old and was still making plays/passes that wow you. And of course he's still an assassin from anywhere on the court.
I'm very happy you covered this story Mike. I actually still have Chris Jackson's (aka Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) rookie card. He was awesome on the Nuggets. Great job man :)
The NBA and nfl have always fined players for their beliefs, like saluting 9/11 people who died, the NFL fined them, the league only let players express themselves when it suits the league
@Banana Peel Gamer No. Its my right as an human to not salute the flag. That symbol doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. It may have a special place in your heart as a symbol for hope, but some see it as a symbol of hate and oppression, and to *tell* those people they *have* to salute something they don't believe in is just morally wrong.
@@chrishansen8119 The behavior is a contradiction. The player is benefiting/profiting from an institution stablished in the country he's not showing respect to. As a human you are free to disagree, however that doesn't justify being disrepectful. The Nuggets didn't want controversy so they shipped him off and he did worse, He didn't get blackballed. It's the same reason why Kap isn't on a team today.
Mike you are such a pro! You discussed the history and described what happened with Abdul-Rauf without getting political about it! A lot of others in the media could learn a lot from you, that's for sure!!!
Its a very difficult subject because the flag means different things to different people. I understand both sides even tho im canadian. Guys like this are trying to send a message because they are losing people to racist cops (not just white cops. Cops are all races and most do nothing about it just to keep their job) but on the other side there are people who lost people to war while defending the flag. Both sides have every reason to be upset about the actions but also both sides have every right to express themselves. Im white but im far from racist and it sucks being always called a racist and having people threaten my life because they think im a nazi but even tho Thats racist themselves i do understand where it comes from. This is just one huge never ending mess because both sides want the other side to surrender to their belief but neither will ever do that. People need to learn to find a common ground and ignore their differences. Would you stop being somebodys friend because they like a different song? No and people shouldn't hate people based on having different beliefs.
He wasn't even trying to send a message. He was chilling in the locker room in solitude while the anthem was playing because he believed the flag was a symbol of oppression. It was more a religious thing for him. Then one day a reporter noticed his continued absence during the anthem and made a big deal out of it. After that he was forced to come out every time the anthem played and controversy generated.
Mike, you and Mahmoud are such role models. He is a forgotten a legend, and that forgotten legend responded to a comment my dad made of him on instagram. Thx so much for this video.
