So true man. Makes me happy to see a younger generation appreciating this. Felt so crushed when I heard about Chris. The only singer that hit me so hard when he passed. Still get a pit in my stomach.
this video is special because it is a LIVE recording. They dont dub the album cut over the pictures, what sound you get is the sound they made at that time. Plus, no vocal mix tricks, its all them.
All their music is wonderful, saw them live a little more than a week before he passed, but my money still goes to their album, Badmotorfinger!! Outshined, Rusty Cage, JESUS CHRIST POSE (still my favorite Soundgarden song😊), etc...you really can't go wrong with ANYTHING on that album! 😁
They got to #1 with an album full of odd time signatures, inventive songwriting, and some of the heaviest off kilter grooves that only tangentially connect them to grunge and didn't get lost in the shuffle of 90s/00s Rock with multiple hits that stayed on the radio even when they were broken up and the rock landscape changed, I'd call that potential reached. They were never meant to be big chart toppers like Nirvana, only be who they were, and that can't be as easily sold as 12 fun pop grunge tunes can.
What breaks my heart is that Chris started in the Grunge era and became so much more. Having fought many demons myself over the years I always wanted those talented humans who put my thoughts into words and songs to overcome the struggles and still be with us today. But mental illness is no joke and if you have dealt with it for years and can no longer fight than my only wish for you is peace and to not be in pain anymore. ❤
They were big in the mid 90s, but as impactful as the grunge movement was it was also short lived. By the late 90s pop music completely overtook the airwaves so those legendary grunge bands had a short window. BTW, you don’t talk too much. You got a sub from me because I enjoy the history as much as the music.
Grunge has always revolved around a message or a story that is pretty heavy in it's content. Whether it's depression, or anger, or social/civil problems that extend far beyond just an individual. It's angst and emotion put to sound and melody. Try the song "Limo Wreck" to REALLY feel that.
One of the greatest rock singers of all time. When you look back on it it's actually pretty amazing how many grunge bands had fabulous vocalists; too many gone too soon!
They were a big, big band. Part of the break up was personal for Chris. Try Rusty Cage. The hypnotic or repetitive nature is exactly what he intended for this song, about depression, and how monotone your days become.
Actually that was one of several refreshing things about Soundgarden, ego just never was a thing, even when they broke up. They all just kind of looked at each other and said "yeah this thing is over, we've said it all", and broke up because they saw what the pressure to constantly produce radio hits had done to others, including Cobain just a couple years prior. Cornell just described the feeling of the breakup as being one of relief for all of them, with no bad vibes. Hence why their getting back together years later had zero shittiness or awkwardness, they just jammed and it felt good and proceeded from there. Grunge seemed to be light on the ego thing anyways.
Soundgarden is what he is known for the most! The rest is after the fact but still great! Chris joined as the drummer ..they had no idea how much of an amazing singer he was until he sang to keep it going when their singer was either fired or quit! They are one of the BIG 4 who changed the modern music scene...Seattle Grunge movement..way more than a hotbed! By the way, this isn't the original audio we know either. The version that uses the album cover as pic..is the ORIGINAL audio.
I’ve been a Soundgarden fan since the very early days. You have to listen to Outshined. Amazing vocals in that one. Amazing vocals everywhere, but that one’s also a great video.
Another great reaction and commentary!! His voice was truly, a gift for the world of music. So much emotion, but also, so much control. Undeniable. Throughout his career, you knew his voice...instantly!! You can't go wrong with anything he's done. The Day I Tried To Live, Spoonman, Burden In My Hands...and Seasons. Please check these out and see what you think. RIP...CC
For future Soundgarden reviews (because I KNOW there's gonna be more), Kim's last name is pronounced like "sail", but with a soft "th". Hiro's name IS pronounced "hero" (or, more accurately, "HEE-do" in Japanese). This was my theme song back in 1999 that I played on a loop for hours. Also, it's YOUR channel. Never apologize for "talking too much"! If someone wants to hear the song without talking, they're MORE than welcome --capable, tho, I dunno -- of clicking the song link.
Keep going with Soundgarden - it’s a treasure trove! Rusty Cage, Slaves and Bulldozers, Spoonman, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Black Hole Sun (their biggest hit but overplayed), Blow Up the Outside World, The Day I Tried To Live, and Mailman are all great songs. Temple of the Dog songs you have to check out if you love Chris: Say Hello to Heaven, Times of Trouble, Reach Down, Hunger Strike. Solo pieces to check out: live performance of When Hope and Promise Fade, studio jam session performance of Seasons, live performance in 2010 of When I’m Down at the Troubadour.
Soundgarden was huge in the 90's... this 1994 album 'Superunknown' sold 6 million copies in the US alone 👍Their 1991 single 'Rusty cage' was even covered by the country legend - Johnny Cash 😲This line-up of Soundgarden was stable from 1991 to 1997, and then 2012 to Chris Cornell's death in 2017: Chris Cornell (vocals + guitar), Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Ben Shepherd (bass). But like most of the Seattle bands that broke big in the 90's (Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Pearl Jam, Hole, etc.)... drug abuse played a big part in their decline and demise... Bands outside Seattle that rode the 'grunge rock' genre to fame (Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Monster Magnet, L7, Veruca Salt, etc.) suffered the same fate... 😪 There were a few Seattle bands that did not break big, but had commendable music - Screaming Trees, Melvins, Tad, Mother Love Bone, etc. There were personal problems w/ Chris Cornell going back to the 90's, involving depression and drug abuse... He was an incredible talent on vocals, but some nights... he was terrible in concert... The band was not faring any better... I think when Soundgarden was touring in 1996/ '97 for the album 'Down on the upside' (it sold 1 million copies in the US)... the bad nights and technical issues playing live were getting worse (Bassist Ben Shepherd got frustrated and walked off stage at 1 show). Soundgarden announced their breakup in 1997... Chris Cornell released his first solo album 'Euphoria morning' in 1999, and had a single "Can't change me"... but the record did not sell up to expectations. He joined Audioslave soon after... When Soundgarden got back together in 2012, they got a single (and video) on the "Marvel's Avengers" movie soundtrack ('Live to rise') and soon released their comeback album 'King Animal' that year. Unfortunately, the same issues that plagued Soundgarden reportedly affected the band as they wrote songs for a new record and toured... Some nights, Chris Cornell was awful and it showed on fans' RUclips videos... The last show Soundgarden played in Detroit in 2017, Cornell was incredibly upset and his wife raised the alarm after he hung up on her on the phone... He was found dead in his hotel room after he had barricaded himself in. That was the end of Soundgarden. It's unfortunate that so many talented singers from the 90's met their demise because of drugs and addiction - Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon), Bradley Nowell (Sublime)... R.I.P.
They only disbanded once really and that was after 30 years of playing together. There was never any issues with these guys. They just needed a break. 30 years is a long time LOLOL The band was locked in for almost 30 years so.... And they were a big band. These guys are legendary and icons no doubt. They are your favorite bands, favorite band type of thing.
Seattle was the place to be as a musician in the early 90's. Much like Nashville is today but Nashville is experiencing a second breath of air. Seattle in the 90's was the Johnny Cash, dolly pardon and Elvis days of the 70's. Nashville today is rock country for that very reason.
A lot grunge and alt-rock as styles are thematically about the despair of being isolated in a packed place like a suburb. Being high for it is kind of the bittersweet edge on a lot of this music if you've ever felt that hopeless nihilism.
Good job yet again my friend. I like the research part and I can only respect the way you try out new music and let us join you on your journey. As far as Chris goes, I have seen a lot of great songs being recommended to you. But what I havent seen yet, is some of his solo work. He just pulls the tears from my eyes with his acoustic versions of 'When I'm down' and 'As hope and promise fade'. They will blow your mind
Also, screw those guys that say you talk too much. We love your process. Keep it up. You do you. Keep learning. Keep experiencing this shit the way you do. Thank you for what you're doing.
Please, please, please do Soundgarden "Rusty Cage" next. EXPLOSIVE Chris vocals. Amazing music by the whole band. So good, Johnny Cash covered it later on.
I wish you picked another song that showcased his range and voice but, you ALWAYS do great reactions so Thank You! A few recommendations for Soundgarden: Slaves and Bulldozers, Beyond the Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Birth Ritual, Gun, Outshined, Rusty Cage A few recommendations for Temple of the Dog (A Tribute Group that he formed for his late friend): Say Hello to Heaven, Reach Down
A good Soundgarden song that's not quite as dark is "Rusty Cage." Fuckin love that one and I'm so glad see it played live. And if you want something completely different that's just a good metal bop, try Static X "Push It."
Nah dude, you need to go back further. This is later Soundgarden, and it's pretty mellow. You wanna hear Chris, hit "Loud Love", "Slaves And Bulldozers", or "Jesus Christ Pose". Also, Temple Of The Dog's "Say Hello 2 Heaven", "Call Me A Dog", or "Pushin Forward Back"
I don't think grunge is depressing at all. It resonates so strongly. I've been fortunate to see Soundgarden many times, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains...but never Nirvana. Ah, Seattle in the 90's...there was nothing like it! I miss those days. I'm still in Seattle, but it just doesn't have the magical music scene it once had.
This is like late mid Chris imo ;). And don’t worry about talking. It’s your channel. Also temple of the dog was a side project he did. Everyone will probably suggest say hello 2 heaven. It’s a good one
When it comes to bands that were innovative and actually played music, the late 60' and 70's were unique and nothing will ever come close to all the amazing styles and just an endless number of bands. Then the 80's seemed to be the end of it all. The hair bands as they called it, or pop metal destroyed it. There were still a number a great bands, but a fraction compared to what I grew up with. I ended up really getting into the hip hop, old school now. Positive, fun, funny, never be that again. Then the 90's came along and I felt I was hearing great bands like these guys all over again with the same innovative musical talent of the 70's, and taking it to it's next level. The only thing I found not so great in so many fantastic sounding bands was this cloud of negatitvity, depression. Not really sure why, but it was the only thing I wished wasn't so much there, but I got into them all. And nearly like the 70's, just too many to list. It seems imo the internet and other factors ruined all music. Imo, around 2005 was the death of hearing great music all the time. I know there's some good bands out there, but not like those two decades basically. And not easy to find. I'm an older dude now and really miss the radio where you could find anything you wanted. And the record shops. Only those that experienced that can understand. Anything you wanted was there. And if one place didn't have it, the other would. But enough of that. Soundgarden was unbelievable and Chris left too early. The best always seem to do. You can go all the way back to Hendrix and Janis and draw a line to today. I offer no explanation except it sucks.
Great choice. Try "Birth Ritual" out "Jesus Christ Pose" for some earlier, heavier songs, but great vocals. Matt Cameron is such a good drummer, Chris would obviously step aside.
Sub Pop are still a big deal. They launched the careers of a lot of the huge grunge acts in the 80s but following that they've had a great track record of signing really creative and successful acts. Definitely *the* iconic label of the Seattle rock scene.
this is just a good entry into the band. Check out Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves and Bulldozers, Jesus Christ Pose, Loud Love, Day I tried To Live, Black Hole Sun, Burden in my Hand, Blow up The Outside World
😭💭 It's ok.. You can say it.. So much talent was wasted when all the greats died too soon 💔 And the reason why the depressing grunge movement happened was bc, all these hair bands (which I love) but, they were all singing about sexy women and fast cars, lots of money, and partying, and folks like Chris, Chester and Layne, felt like life wasn't always one big happy, fantasy. They wanted tell stories about real life. It's not always flashy and sweet. I'm just telling you what they said. I personally love love love grunge with all my heart. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to put on AC/DC or Bon Jovi and feeling energized with some happy tunes!! 😁🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸
Home Fry here. 😊 Can you please respond to Home Free singing Hillbilly Bone which shows off Tim the base singer and Take Me Home Country Roads which features Rob and his SOUL just sucks you in. I enjoy your reactions. Thank you for playing Home Free. I can’t get enough of them. Take care. ❤
Chris Cornell is an angst magnet. We are all tired of everything out here. Light the world on fire kind of feeling…. Let’s skip to the apocalypse and see who wins kind of voice.
Your pain is felt by all of us. He is missed and was in my opinion one of the most prolific singer/songwriters in many generations! Glad that you get it and his deepest and best work was with Soundgarden! Gotta check out the OG masterpieces from them if you haven't by now.
I believe grunge rock was the 90's backlash to the excess of the 80's... In 1989, the music industry was churning out bands that all looked the same - big hair, makeup, glam costumes, songs about girls and partying... There was a lot of great music, but the image was becoming more important than the substance. That same year, u had Nirvana and Soundgarden release albums did not sound anything like Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, Poison or Skid Row... it was raw and real... heavy and under-produced... and the lyrics were about personal turmoil and struggles. By 1990, that sound was starting to take off as rock music got heavier and more real... Alice In Chains, Pantera, and Jane's Addiction were starting to take off commercially. It just needed an ignition spark to make it big. That came in the Fall of 1991 when Nirvana's 'Smells like teen spirit' became a huge hit and an anthem for the 90's generation of rock fans... They couldn't relate to Poison's "Nothin' but a good time" ... or Ratt's "Loving you is a dirty job"... anymore... They wanted the dark, heavy lyrics that spoke to them... and they wanted to rage. All of a sudden, bands like Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, etc... band that were never given a chance, were suddenly in demand! MTV and radio could not sell 80's bands like Kix, Bang Tango, Enuff Znuff, or Warrant any more in 1992... the demand had dried up, so they focused on new bands that sounded more 90's, and that began the 'alternative rock trend... R.E.M, Soul Asylum, Radiohead, Tool, Candlebox, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots etc. were suddenly booming in 1993, while 80's bands were ridiculed and banished from radio and MTV airplay.
Just to try and spread some light, this song and Grunge is NOT dark and depressing,,, it's unifying.😊 Throughout the ages many have felt the same feelings expressed in this song. Chris beautifully and powerfully expresses it for us in this song. It's unifying imo. Great reaction. Peace, light and love...💞
@@jonahtee5889 You are a lost soul. Grunge and this song in particular is not depressing... it's cathartic and healing to know you are not alone in what Chris is singing about here. The draw is the unity of the understanding of the pain and knowing you are not alone. NOT depressing AT ALL. Simply beautiful.
@tinagilbert8902 ok lmao I can't believe I have to explain this. What's the title to this song? 🤔 and how does that express whatever happy feelings you feel about black days? If you listen to the lyrics, he's not cheerful. He's not cheering for you. How do you get happy out of regret and some sadness.?
Just to try and spread some light,..lol.... the grunge ''Poor Me'' music movement was the Genesis of the ''poor me woke culture'' were suffering through right now... here I go I fixed your smug and incorrect comment
The last great Rock & Roll era in my opinion -- But I like to call it GRUDGE music, instead of Grunge........ but that's just me -- You GOT to review "Black Hole Sun" with it's "official music video"
Chris has absolutely talked about how they were the first to gain records but were not grunge. Grunge came along out of them all having to be classified as alternative. Sorry to disagree but they were very successful and wrote about life.
I have to disagree. The best of the best are never what is popular. What's popular, especially no-a-days, is what's heavily promoted by the label. People hear it so much they eventually give in and think they like it.
Grunge music was Blues for Gen X. Soul and emotion, raw and painful, but 100% honesty.
Truth
So true man. Makes me happy to see a younger generation appreciating this. Felt so crushed when I heard about Chris. The only singer that hit me so hard when he passed. Still get a pit in my stomach.
absolutely. it has rhe bones of blues and the flesh of metal 🤘
I'm 53, and I was in my 20s, and this is one of the best descriptions.
Yes!!!!
You don’t talk too much. You’re thoughtful and interesting, it’s good. This is one of my all time favorite Cornell songs with any band.
I really like how you research the bands beforehand. Gives you alot of important context that other reactors are missing
this video is special because it is a LIVE recording.
✨his absolute PASSION was, and will always be UNMATCHED!!✨ he could convey his emotions in everything he did, and he will live forever!!🤘🤘
time for "Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike" both Cornell and Vedder share vocals...........EPIC
That "little bit of light" comment hit me as true. The music is dark but just slightly hopeful. Nicely done!
Brother....SG became my number 1 band. I love them till this day.
Great reaction to a great song! Chris is a legend. You should talk more!! 😁
Grunge has always revolved around a message or a story that is pretty heavy in it's content. Whether it's depression, or anger, or social/civil problems that extend far beyond just an individual. It's angst and emotion put to sound and melody. Try the song "Limo Wreck" to REALLY feel that.
At the end of the day, Chris was one of the most incredible rock singers of all time. He had the kind of power and range that were explosive.
Thank you for researching before you review. It makes a difference. Love your reviews! Keep up the great work
One of the greatest rock singers of all time. When you look back on it it's actually pretty amazing how many grunge bands had fabulous vocalists; too many gone too soon!
He was so good. We all lost when he left us…
I appreciate the emotions you express to Chris's vocals and his songwriting. That's why he's the greatest rock singer of all time.
"You know what I like about grunge? It's really depressing". -- I died.
Same! 😆
One of the softest SG songs you could possibly pick. Try Limo Wreck or Slaves and Bulldozers, gives a great all around of SG.
They were a big, big band. Part of the break up was personal for Chris. Try Rusty Cage.
The hypnotic or repetitive nature is exactly what he intended for this song, about depression, and how monotone your days become.
Yes, also this!

It's unfiltered honesty, is what it is.
Oh I love his voice!! One of my favorites is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. It’s the best of both worlds with Chris and Eddie Vetter!!!

Soundgarden basically ‘invented’ grunge music before the had a name for it, and then transcended the genre they helped invent ❤

This video is A LIVE performance, not them lip-synching to the record playback. 👍🏽🤩
Grunge was like… my generation’s blues.
I cried when I heard about Chris Cornell. It's rare when an artist says what you feel in a way you can hear it! Miss you Chris!😢
..it’s depressing, you nailed it- and sometimes that’s what you need.
Please, please, please do Soundgarden "Rusty Cage" next. EXPLOSIVE Chris vocals. Amazing music by the whole band. So good, Johnny Cash covered it later on.
Keep researching! It’s one of the main reasons I visit your channel. 🎶
The dude can peel the paint off your ceiling! 😎 But this is a "calm song". 💯
Try "Outshined" or "Spoon Man" for the radio song examples. 💯😎
I wish you picked another song that showcased his range and voice but, you ALWAYS do great reactions so Thank You!
A few recommendations for Soundgarden:
Slaves and Bulldozers, Beyond the Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Birth Ritual, Gun, Outshined, Rusty Cage
A few recommendations for Temple of the Dog (A Tribute Group that he formed for his late friend):
Say Hello to Heaven, Reach Down

Melancholy with hints of Infinite Sadness, a Smashing Pumpkins pun

This is not the studio version. The studio version has more control over the melody. But it is still great.
This is like late mid Chris imo ;). And don’t worry about talking. It’s your channel. Also temple of the dog was a side project he did. Everyone will probably suggest say hello 2 heaven. It’s a good one
Love your reactions! You love Chris, you should check out some of his solo stuff..."Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart" is my current obsession

Outshined is your next Soundgarden song!
From Audioslave: Show me how to live
From Soundgarden: Outshined, Jesus Christ pose
I think the word you're looking for is 'hypnotic'
Great choice.
Try "Birth Ritual" out "Jesus Christ Pose" for some earlier, heavier songs, but great vocals.
Matt Cameron is such a good drummer, Chris would obviously step aside.
Man, try "The day, i tried to live". You`l like it. Trust me..... the great song
Outshined brother😊
Try "Rusty Cage" " Outshined" "Spoonman" "Blow up the Outside World " :)
In my opinion (outshined ) Was Soundgarden's best song. You should check it out.
Sub Pop are still a big deal. They launched the careers of a lot of the huge grunge acts in the 80s but following that they've had a great track record of signing really creative and successful acts. Definitely *the* iconic label of the Seattle rock scene.
Soundgarden was huge. Maybe not quite Nirvana huge, but they were a big deal in the 1990s.
this is just a good entry into the band. Check out Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves and Bulldozers, Jesus Christ Pose, Loud Love, Day I tried To Live, Black Hole Sun, Burden in my Hand, Blow up The Outside World
😭💭
It's ok.. You can say it.. So much talent was wasted when all the greats died too soon 💔
And the reason why the depressing grunge movement happened was bc, all these hair bands (which I love) but, they were all singing about sexy women and fast cars, lots of money, and partying, and folks like Chris, Chester and Layne, felt like life wasn't always one big happy, fantasy. They wanted tell stories about real life. It's not always flashy and sweet. I'm just telling you what they said. I personally love love love grunge with all my heart. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to put on AC/DC or Bon Jovi and feeling energized with some happy tunes!!
😁🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸
I would give you $20 bucks to dig in and find Mother Love Bone!
I had a signed photo of Chris on my wall. It fell and broke the day before he died 😢
I like you seem like a cool dude.
Bro. Spoonman. And if you wanna hear the gold standard high water mark of chris' voice. Soundgarden- slaves and bulldozers.
Your pain is felt by all of us. He is missed and was in my opinion one of the most prolific singer/songwriters in many generations! Glad that you get it and his deepest and best work was with Soundgarden! Gotta check out the OG masterpieces from them if you haven't by now.
Time for some Temple of the Dog "Hunger Strike" 🤘
Next needs to be something heavy. “Rusty Cage” seems appropriate.
I ❤️ U 4 ❤️ GRUNGE. ☮️❤️😎
For gen x they were a big big band.
Please gawd! Slaves & Bulldozers by Soundgarden if you wanna hear some shit! 🎉
💚💚💚💚💚
Find the studio version!
Nah grunge is definitely depressing. That's part of the draw.
Many songs are very dark in this song he is sing about Black Days ?
Introduction? U went to far back up n check out Beyond The Wheel 1990
Sir pls react audioslave NUMBER#1 ZERO. You might like it.
And GASOLINE.
Next song has to be “ Outshined “ and then do the rest
They were the BEST of the Grunge bands in my opinion.
This song was my first strip club experience. The dancers song was “ Fell on Black Days “ Forever burned in memory
It's a great shame that so many black people in America don't think of rock (and metal) music as soulful. They are missing out.
Unlike A LOT of Reactors (I've seen) at least you have something interesting to say.
Check out Four Walled World . Its darker than this one .
Te pasaste pana con SG,,,,saludos a toda la REBELDE de Guayaquil Ecuador latam...i ati tambien amigo exitos
I think the description you are searching for, for this video is EMO. Look them up.
Album version is better. But still great song
Alice n chains and nirvana got nothin!
I have to disagree. The best of the best are never what is popular. What's popular, especially no-a-days, is what's heavily promoted by the label. People hear it so much they eventually give in and think they like it.
This is the second version. Not as good as album. WHY does everyone choose this version???
"Birth Ritual" from Soundgarden and "Seasons" from Chris Cornell's solo
Go Pack Go!
