I love this chatty style of video. Last year, I read The Brothers Karamazov. I enjoyed it and felt a sense of accomplishment in completing it. I did decide it would be the first and last great Russian literature book I ever read. Depending upon what you think about this book when you are done, I may change my mind. The fact that it is even longer than The Brothers Karamazov does give me pause though. 🐔

Thank you! To be honest I’ve heard from more people that their favourite book of all time is Brothers Karamazov. So I’m not sure if youre missing out! Anna Karenina is a great book for sure, if you’re interested in the story but don’t want to commit to reading this huge book, I heard great things about the movie/series adaptations! My boyfriend’s mom recommended the Greta Garbo version to me, apparently it’s amazing :) since Anna K is basically a drama, I imagine it translates well to screen! I will watch it myself once I’m done with the book ☺️

@@Nixreads You're welcome. After I see your final thoughts, I will decide. I may get the book and read it over a long period. I will have to buy it because there is no way I can read in time frame my library allows even if I renew the hold a couple of times. Regardless of it I get the book, I will check out the movie.

Sooo lovely to see your sort of reading vlog! I can't believe yours is sooo much longer haha I should have expected it with German! And I'm so glad we're reading together! It definitely made me stop and think more about it, and also made me pursue this book, I got sooo bored at times haha. But it is so readable! Don't know if the translations have just tried to make it more accessible, but you always think of Russian literature as being dense! Can't wait to see part 2 of your reading journey :)

I have just over 100 pages left ah!
Yes I also always wonder with translations how much they differ from the original … oh well I’ll never know - I will probably not understand Russian in my lifetime 😂

Such a great book and one of my all time favourites. Indeed, the societal judgments and restrictions of 19th century Russia really grate on our modern sensibilities but for people of the time, it was absolutely natural and normal. That was one of the things that Tolstoy was trying to raise awareness of, that change was necessary. I admire your ability to read it in German. I always thought it would be interesting to be able to read it in the original Russian and see if the sense of the book changes. Hopefully, translators are skilled enough to retain that.👩‍🌾

The cultural framing in this book is so interesting! Ah I wish I could read any book in its original language, that would be a great superpower ☺️
I can see why this is an all time favourite!

Having read _War and Peace_ in January, I think that my reading of _Anna_ (probably when I was a teenager) was too early for me to appreciate any of the dynamics. Maybe I should revisit.
I had none of the expected problems with _W&P,_ too many characters or identifying who’s who, but it helped that I was with a group lightly touching base on Voxer - 🚜

Ah I completely forgot to mention it in my video but your W&P check ins inspired me to film this video as well ☺️
Compared to W&P it’s only half the size ha! Tbh I don’t think I could have appreciated the conflicts if I had read this as a teenager but then again, I didn’t really like classics back then!
I never used Voxer, is it user friendly and great for buddy reads?
