If you have forgotten the sudo password for the Steam Deck then don't worry I will teach you how to reset the forgotten sudo password the quick and easy way!
This are the steps on how to reset a forgotten sudo password. You will need a keyboard attached to the Steam Deck to enter the commands easily -
1. While the Steam Deck is powered off, hold the 3dots (QAM) and turn on the Steam Deck.
2. The recovery menu will appear. On your keyboard highlight the 3rd option - CURRENT (OS Boot Menu) then press enter.
3. The GRUB menu will appear. Highlight the 1st option - SteamOS then on your keyboard press "e" to edit the boot options.
4. Press down cursor on the keyboard until steamenv_boot is highlighted. Press "end" to go to the end of the line.
5. Enter the command -
init=/bin/bash
6. Press CTRL-X to boot!
7. Enter the command -
mount -n -o rw,remount /
8. Enter the command -
passwd deck
9. Enter new password and retype the new password.
10. And finally enter the command -
reboot -f
sudo password has been reset! You can now boot to desktop mode and use sudo commands using the new password!

this was the best tutorial I've seen in a long time clear, straight to the point and very easy to understand to a steam deck noobie such as myself
worked perfectly, like others after after an update, my password was reset and I could not access CryoUtilities to tweak settings for my deck, now I can.
Thank you so much.
much appreciated
Awesome! enjoy the Steam Deck!
I seriously can't thank you enough for this video, my password somehow got changed after an update and after weeks of trying to get the recovery images to work I was about to give up and factory reset. This helped me reset my password in less than 5 mins using only a keyboard. Thank you so so much

BTW what Steam OS version are you on? I'm testing SteamOS 3.5 and sadly this easy method doesn't work in there anymore. Need to find another solution when SteamOS 3.5 rolls out to stable.
Came here to say the same, now it didn't work for me either, I really don't want to reinstall steam os...

When I reach the prompt to enter a New Password, it doesn’t let me type at all. It still detects my keyboard, I’ve done all of the steps correctly. What do I do?
Just enter the password - you wont see it as you type it. Press enter once done and confirm it again.

A tutorial if I wanna permanently remove the sudo password and don't have one?
if you want to permanently remove the sudo password -
Open konsole terminal
sudo passwd -d deck
This might be a dumb question, but is there a specific “end” key? Does this have to be done on a full length keyboard or something?
Thats a totally valid question!
I hooked up a full sized USB keyboard and there is a dedicated "end" key. If you dont have an "end" key, use the right arrow keys until you get to the end of the line, then add the init=/bin/bash
I hope it helps!
Thank you so much! You’re a life saver. Just subbed, keep up the helpful vids.
I own a bluetooth K380 (i think i got the name right) would that work if i just plug it together via wire, oh and is sudo the so called "Administration" password youd get if you do anything that would need administration?
I haven't tried a K380 but if it has a USB cable and it gets detected automatically that will work. I use a K520 using a unifying dongle and that works too.
And yes sudo password is needed for tasks that need root / administrator rights - example decky loader, installing clover / refind etc etc
You are the best!!! Thanks
No worries I'm glad you find the guide useful.
Did this and attempted to run a sudo command to install flatpak. I get "failed to init transaction. (unable to lock database)
What flatpak are you trying to install?
Usually you dont need sudo when installing flatpaks.
Thanks man!

After i follow your step, when i tried to reboot it, it just appear black screen with mouse cursor, any idea what happened?
Sorry for late reply
Could be SteamOS is taking its time to start up? Hopefully it worked out for you. I have another method if it didnt work -
ruclips.net/video/B1qfIdP2Ayo/видео.htmlsi=yoHQktkyA3pTa7k4
unfortunately not working, after typing 'mount -n -o rw,remount /' it just says mount: /: can't find in /etc/fstab
Please make sure there are no typos. I also made an updated guide please follow this instead -
ruclips.net/video/B1qfIdP2Ayo/видео.html
The 3dots and power button don’t work for me. It just powers it on regularly
Maybe its a timing issue?
Make sure Steam Deck is powered off then hold the 3dots and while holding the 3dots turn on the Steam Deck.
That sequence alwats works for me
hallo, i already try all the steps , but still incorect password
Try the steps again maybe you missed a step.
Make sure on the recovery screen to select the 3rd option - CURRENT.
And once in the bash shell make sure there is no typo in your commands -
mount -n -o rw,remount /
passwd deck
Then enter your new sudo password, press enter and confirm it.
do you need a wired keyboard? i cant use my wireless one it just disconnects
You can use a wired USB keyboard or wireless (not Bluetooth) keyboard. I'm using Logitech wireless k400+ with unifying receiver.
Also make sure you follow this updated method much easier and quicker -
ruclips.net/video/B1qfIdP2Ayo/видео.html
How do i press E, the keyboard wont pop up by hitting the ... and hiting X?
You would need a USB keyboard for this.
My deck freezes every time I get past the ctrl+x part. Keyboard stops working. And now I can't boot my deck normally either :(
Edit: sorted comments by new and found the more recent video, thanks
Glad you got it working! Happy to help!
Idk why but my password hasnt changed, when i try to download something and i type in the new password, it doesnt work
Try the steps again maybe you missed a step.
Make sure on the recovery screen to select the 3rd option - CURRENT.
And once in the bash shell prompt when changing the password make sure - passwd deck
Just wondering why might my keyboard not work in the part after CTRL and X
Because something changed in SteamOS 3.5.X.
Please use this updated method for SteamOS 3.5.X -
ruclips.net/video/B1qfIdP2Ayo/видео.html
Im not gonna lose my current files?
You won't lose any files. It just resets the sudo password for the deck account
COOL!!!!
Confirmed still working
I'm going to try this tonight
Just take note this method wont work on SteamOS 3.5
Use this updated method, work on both Stable SteamOS 3.4.11 and Beta SteamOS 3.5.1

@@10MinuteSteamDeckGamer Thanks for the tip. I haven't tried it yet waiting for the dock I ordered to arrive before I try it so I can hook up a monitor, keyboard and mouse to make the process easier

I noticed to open the grub on the menu it says (C) and that can be accessed with the options button on the deck so why isn’t there one for the (E) 😢
My keyboard won’t connect via a dock so I can’t type the code?
Could be a compatibility issue with the dock? I just use a Logitech unifying receiver and plug it in via a USB-C adapter
Command „mount“ doesnt work for me, it is a „bad option“ saying me. And if I try to with systemd.debug_shell and reboot with ctrl+x, I can’t open the debug Command with ctrl+alt+F9, nothing happens, I also tried with shift+ctrl+alt+F9 ... any ideas? Thanks!
Sorry for late reply. Use the root debug shell method, and maybe your keyboard has Fn key. Use Fn CTL ALT F9 to access the root debug shell.

Awesome! Happy to help!
im getting an issue "bash: cannot set terminal process group (-1): inappropriate ioctl for device." followed by "bash: no job control in this shell"
any idea what this means and how to fix?
Could be a typo or something else. I would suggest use this updated guide i created a while back as this is much quiker and easier less commands to type -
ruclips.net/video/B1qfIdP2Ayo/видео.html
this is not letting me enter the remount comand. it goes straight to booting up.
Make sure after you do step 5 init=/bin/bash
Follow it with CTRL-X
When in clover I choose SteamOS and it just boots into the so, I don’t get the menu you refer too appear. What am I missing doing .?
@davidwatts8578 try it again please -
Power off the Steam Deck, and while powered off hold down 3dots then press power button. Once you hear the beep then release the buttons. When the Clover screen appears, select SteamOS
does this work with a bluetooth keyboard, i don't have a usb one on me
Sorry you cant use bluetooth keyboard with this method just regular USB keyboard.
Thanks for this. When booting after the bin/bash command my deck is "failing to start switch root". Any ideas?
i'll check on it i think a different method is needed for your scenario.

When I go to type my password in it wont let me

hi man! how i can turn off sudo password like default?
Like remove the sudo password?

Unfortunately if you dual boot Windows will always take over the boot sequence. You need something like Clover for the 3dots + power method to work if you dual boot.
If you dont dual boot and just use SteamOS, the 3dots + power method works right away.
