Funny to hear people cite John Mayer as an influence. I am 62 and when I listen to John I hear his influences. I guess I am too old, he is almost transparent as he melds everything from Garcia to B.B. into his sound. I see him as a great translator.

I'm 70 and I've seen many of his influences. That said, Tomo's triads and Mayer's Dead & Company work changed my guitar trajectory. Tomo led to my learning triads up and across the neck. And focusing on intervals. John suggested learning songs, then reverse engineering them. Because Dead songs are relatively easy to play - not talking about soloing, where even Mayer said he got lost while learning them - and yet have a range of intros, riffs, bridges and outros, all within a relatively limited set of chords, keys, often using the Mixolydian mode... they provide a great laboratory to bring many different things together. It all depends on what you already know, but for me it's supercharged my learning curve.

@@mikem668 I have played in Dead bands for many years, and every night is a learning experience soloing on these songs. It all depends on what other people are playing, you have to be so open to the harmonic motion you are being presented with. It is the most fun I can have playing music.

So many thoughts and questions.
I’m an old guy, 53. I started playing classical for a few years intensely with lessons about 35 years ago (my first guitar is a takemine hirade h-7, I still have it couldn’t believe how long ago I played) after that I went back to college and work, and really on playing in summers when days are long.
While I was playing 35 years ago, I remember listening to Segovia’s Bach cello suites, and somehow, I learned of cello maestro Pablo Casal. So I really loved the sound of the cello, it was like an internal deep voice just like my voice, maybe a little deeper than my voice but it felt like that sound became the voice in my head. Then ten years ago I became a father (we have two little girls 9&4 now :)) but when they were babies this song/sound would come from me when they were babies. I was so tired trying to get them to sleep but that Pablo Casal sound came back to sing to them, as though I was stripped to nothing but that pure wave.
Now I need to go back to work by next year but I don’t want to so I bought an electric (g&l asat classic bluesboy w/p90 was the first one) and I never learned to improvise. Which is why I came to your lessons maestro.
To find that voice again.

Idk if its a bad thing but when i play i dont think about scales at all, i improvise with whatever note i want to pull out of my arsenal. Theres no such thing as a wrong note, just unexpected ones

Maybe, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t use those scales. Music theory isn’t required to know which scale to play, but it can help solidify or explain one’s understanding of it. It’s sort of like verb conjugations: even if you’ve never been taught the different verb forms to use in your native language, you still know which one to use to fit a sentence. Nobody thinks “I’m going to use this verb form” while they’re talking, they just know which one to use. For some people, they know which one to use through schooling (especially non-native speakers of a language); for others, they use the one they’ve learned by experience, no grammar lessons required.

@@mattador It's an interesting thing, because I think even the best players that claim "they don't know theory" actually understand a great deal more than they care to admit, they just have trusted and developed their ear (and also fingers from the woodshed!) to allow their own understanding of harmony to blossom.

@@TomoFujitaMusicyes Sir, the funk rhythm great.. and also those intervals . sliding just 2 notes .. not sure what we call that . using 1st and 3rd string. or 2nd and 4th string,, can do lower strings too 5th and 3rd. less is more sometimes only 2 note chords almost..

If I really want to know the Key. I play a F, F#, C#, G# D# - As they fit keys are CGDA -- If not go to the Flat side . That will always get me really close.
If it is Jazz I 'll generally start with Bb Eb Ab -- Nice demo -- Play what sounds good and it will be good. Don't forget to Breathe.

might be true but neither are thinking “minor pentatonic” in their phrasing. that’s the important part
They ain't focused on playing a chromatic scale, that is true. Five notes out of seven, they're acting like they got some special sauce when in fact they are playing in one key, five note scale i.e. pentatonic.
Blues is not easy play. Easy to play a minor pentatonic shapes. So much fun! @@kenwilson6850
