  • Pulsar Patch Along #6: Ultimate Performance Patch v1.0.
This video tutorial explores a patch that attempts to squeeze maximum functionality out of Pulsar-23. The patch is ideal for live improvisation using just Pulsar-23.
This patch draws form many techniques pioneered and explored my the wonderful folks over on Electronic Talk Discord server which is a Pulsar/SOMA heavy server created by S.R. Wilson - see ya there!

Thank you! A wonderful video and explanation! The sounds from the lfo to the hht are killer. I love that 'vibra-slap' or rattle you get. Utilizing the 1/8" out for quick mutes is awesome. And the jam at the end when you use the ring to hold the cello sound. Ties it all up.
    You got my gears turning.
And, thanks for the love! I really appreciate the links in video, I need to step up my game.

Thanks for the kind words! My favorite thing about this little community of Pulsar users is the way ideas bounce around and mutate. I’m ve been so inspired by all of you videos and I look forward to them every week. It takes dedication to be so consistent and to come up with things to explore. I commend you and appreciate you a ton! :)

Seeing these videos, I often think of Vlad coming up with a new musical alphabet and then users like you and Mr. Wilson taking that alphabet and forming new words, sentences and paragraphs and it always blows my mind viewing the constant evolution of the instrument. Without fail, every video I see of yours and S.R.s inspires me into a new rabbit hole and composition and I cannot thank you enough for your dedication to the ingenuity and progression to the community.

First off, thank you so much for the kind comment. I’m glad some people are finding these videos useful. I certainly have fun making them. I feel similar to you. I’ll be getting into a little rut with how I’m using Pulsar and then I’ll see a S.R. Wilson video that completely opens up a new branch of exploration. So many times I think I’ve “figured out” Pulsar, then a few days later I’m feeling like we have all only scratched the surface.
This was my first longer form video. Was 10 minutes straight of patching too much? Do you think this would have been better as 2 or 3 shorter videos? I’d appreciate your thoughts.
      Thanks again!

@@guiremcguire743 Oh for sure! This is just a little box of wonders that keeps opening up. Personally, I like the longer form videos, but I'm a bit older so I tend to find the short videos a little lacking... I like to dive into the subject more and get a greater grasp of what all is happening. I'll pause the video, go on a tangent, then unpatch my tangent and dive back in. I would say maybe if you're worried about losing viewer interest, you could do the little segmentations on the progress bar? Then people can jump to wherever they may want. On a side note, do you know if anybody has put together anything to document their patches? Right now I use a printout and draw my patches with colored pencils for future reference, and while that's a fun arts and craft time, I'm wondering if there is a computer wizard out there who may have put together a computer way of documenting patches...

The progress bar is a good idea. I need to google how to do that.
As far as patch saving, I usually do pen and paper like this (for example):
      +10 -> attenuator in -> attenuator out -> data pin -> etc
I keep the patch note organized by module in an attempt to try to make it easier to recreate.
      Thanks for the feedback!

@@guiremcguire743 I fell in love with the Pulsar because of the loop recorders. I loved the idea of sorta working within those confines. Lately I sorta have a mix of that but then either complimented with Ornament 8 inputs or Polyend Tracker/Play sequences. All kinda depends on how I feel when I sit down in front of the gear. I’m huge into percussion so sometimes I need that little bit of precise nudging that I can’t usually do in the recorders. But I love it all. Got a second P23 coming because I want MORE lanes to work with haha.

Nice. An Ornament and a 2nd pulsar?! I’d love to see some videos with that combination. Yeah, I think the loop records are an amazing aspect of the Pulsar and I love the way you can layer what is on the looper with other trig inputs. The is no master control of Pulsar and I love that.

    • @_adrienmccarthy7473

@@guiremcguire743 agreed 100%. That’s what I like the Ornament for as well. There’s no real clock, it’s really a lovely, confounding experience but somehow I always manage to get something great out of it. And yeah the 2nd Pulsar is really just my need for more layers. Creating more tom sounds, and more metallic percussion pieces. I find myself leaning a lot on the Polyend samplers to add in sounds, I wanna try and stop that and just really give in to the Soma ecosystem.

Im a big fan of SOMA synths and just borrowed a friends Pulsar thinking I would explore before I bought one. I quickly realized Im in over my head! (I dont do modular synthesis or anything and have enjoyed Soma's stuff because it's really all about exploration and just finding unexpected sounds that anyone can play, and this clearly has a much steeper learning curve). I tried to follow along but was totally lost within 4 minutes LOL.
Thats why you try before you buy! Back to my Digitakt!

Hi first of all thanks for all this tremendous videos. I got the pulsar couple of weeks ago… crazy story heppened and I got this thing which I dreamed of since it’s release. a quick first questin: i tap the add button to listen to each sound of the module manually, but after couple of taps ( third or forth I think ) a long release of the sound comes. IAfter that I can tap it for same amount of times and the same thing happens again. I tried all sort of things to stop that, but hadn’t any success. If I trigger them with the lfo e.g. that doesn‘t happen. why is that?! What is that long release and how can I turn it off? And I would love to see a video, to make a simple beat just without any patching. Do you think you can do that? Much love and support from munich Germany

Why do you say so? What do you mean?
Pretty intuitive MIDI implementation. As a stand alone semi-modular it has a ton of fun stuff to explore with nothing more than itself…but…also super fun with modular stuff too :)
