My Frontier didn't come with replicable filters just an empty vertical slot. To the left of that empty slot seems like a permanent filter. Blew the chamber with compressed air then install the two new filters. There was no clip, just push in, then the existing vertical cover no longer needed and won't fit either. 6 screws to remove should be toolless like my Camrys.
I agree it is a poor design.

Do all 2001 nissan xterras have a cabin air filter? Mine looks like it has a slot where the filters could go but there is no pin and the cover of the slot wont move.

I have a 2000 Frontier Crew Cab and it appears to not have cabin air filters. Slot doesn't look to have ever been cut out.
The 2000 model did not come with the cabin air filter option. The cabin air filter was introduced in 2001 on this model.

I see from numerous responses that any Frontier pickup before 2001 (such as my 1998) does NOT have a cabin air filter. OK, so...
Just as a point of info: How does the air get cleaned? Does the lack of an air filter mean that some parts of the system get dirty and need cleaning/replacement from time to time?
I removed some screws from the plastic box behind the glove compartment and pried it open a little (couldn't remove it entirely). It looks like there is a permanent(?) filter of some sort, with fine metal fins. Maybe that needs to get replaced once in a while by an a/c tech?

Most cars before the early 2000s did not come with the cabin air filter option. On this vehicle not all came with this option. To get your vents cleaned you can reach out to your local detailer and see if they have a way of doing it.
My 2004 had no filter just an empty vertical slot once the cover is removed. To the left of the slot is the permanent filter. Blew out the empty chamber with compressed air. In any case the filters shown on this video fits perfectly in that empty slot.

which way is air flow? i took some out of my 04 frontier an air was moving to the right. but my replacement filters will only install with clip with air flow going from passenger side toward driver side (left)
Our filters have the air flow pointing left.

My 2004 Frontier is on a split year where some component designs changed as there are two different filter configurations. Best is go to the dealer provide a VIN number to be sure.

Will this blow out cold air.
Changing out your cabin air filter will help better the airflow when your old filter is dirty and packed with debris. This will not make the air colder but it will give you cleaner air when it is time to change your filter.

Filterheads I had to cut a hole where they where supposed to be and shoveled them in there.

Replacing the cabin filter will help your a/c blow better. However it does not control the climate. Thanks for watching!

Air flow
Look at the orientation on how we have installed the filter. These filters can be installed in one way and you want to make sure you can reinstall the clip that holds the bottom one into place.
