    Technical details:
    Type: 90 degree V8 electric piston engine with cross plane crankshaft
    Maximum RPM: 1,000 RPM
    Input voltage: 15 volts dc
    Speed controller: Mechanical PWM using eccentric rotating contacts.
    Cylinder bore diameter: 13mm
    Piston stroke length: 25.4mm (1 inch)
    Total theoretical displacement: 27cc
    Firing order: 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2 (MOPAR)
    Main bearing size: 4x9x4 mm (684zz)
    Big end bearing size: N/A (plain)
    Flywheel mass: 500g
    Switching relays: 12 volt 30 amp
    Solenoid model: home made
    Total mass of engine: 4kg approximately
    Exhaust emissions: zero
    More information:
    A solenoid engine uses the magnetic pull of solenoids to turn a crankshaft, and resembles the architecture of an internal combustion engine. The crankshaft on this engine was built using Meccano discs, 4mm brass rod and various m4 nuts and bolts, and is counterweighted to balance the rotational and reciprocating mass. The engine uses Meccano timing chain and sprockets, and was originally designed as a four stroke but later converted to two stroke. The engine can still run as a four stroke, simply by swapping the timing gear to a 2:1 ratio and re timing the camshaft. This engine does not develop much torque, certainly much less torque than a standard rotary electric motor can produce, for the equivalent power input - for this reason the solenoid engine is just a novelty and an educational model.
    I built this engine for fun, from mainly scrap metal and wood, and using mostly hand tools, and a cordless electric drill, during summer and autumn of 2012.

    Sounds like a real engine it doesn’t really sound like a Scania V8 it more sounds like an I6 but awesome work I wish I could buy it

    Love all the solenoid engines you've made so far. excellent job! just wanted to ask what the rough dimensions are for the whole thing?

      Hi, and thanks for your comment. The footprint of this engine is roughly the same as a piece of A4 paper.

    Two questions how do you do complex metal work like making a crank shaft. Also how fast could this motor spin before you exceed it's mechanical limitations.

      Hi, the crankshaft looks complex but it really isn't, it is made up of meccano discs and 4mm diameter brass rod, with 4mm bolts and nuts for the crankpins and counterweights. I have revved it out to a maximum of about 1,200 rpm and it starts getting a bit shakey at that speed.

    There's always 2 solenoid at top dead centre at the same time.
    So since you wired it as "2 stroke" you only need 4 cam switches and 4 relays.
    Unless I am missing something? 🤔

      I originally designed it to be a 4 stroke (the earliest video of this v8 running, it is set up as a 4 stroke), but I converted it to 2 stroke as it was very sluggish. Thanks for commenting.

    Was there a reason you went from the original 4 stroke design to 2 stroke? I'm currently deciding on which to use for my own engine under construction. The power stroke overlap on a 2 stroke layout is obviously advantageous, but I'm thinking that maybe the conventional 4 stroke arrangement, with a reduced stroke overlap, could capture some of the burble that a real V8 has. (firing order is also same as yours)

      +follytowers I think you nailed it in your comment there. I originally wanted the authentic four stroke v8 sound, but then it wasn't fast enough for me so I converted it to two stroke. It sounds more "v8" like as a two stroke. Hope you enjoy your build, will you be publishing a video of it? I'd love to see.

      +davidrobert2007 Thanks for replying. I'm undecided now that I've read your answer, on whether to go for 2 or 4 now - I'll probably go for 4 to start with like you did. Currently looking on Ebay for Meccano sprockets and chains.

      ***** Hey Phil thanks for the link - I think that's some jolly impressive work you're doing there - well done. Regarding the Meccano chain - I managed to find some new, old stock chain for my last solenoid engine (from ebay France), as the used chain can be a bit ropey and unpredictable at higher rpms, I'm not sure if it helps but thought I'd throw that in. I look forward to seeing your v8 running in the future. Keep up the good work. Cheers. Dave.

    How much current does it draw? My single solenoid engine draws 600-700mA constant at 15v.

      Hi, I used TVS diodes, and I think they're connected the same as a normal flyback diode across the solenoids.

    What are those copper coils at the bottom for?

      They are 12 volt relays, that switch the current to the solenoid coils.

      Dude, there is a new invention you may not here of, it is
      called the transistor! Actualy you did a lot of good work in that engine, but I
      think that it could be a bit better if you used transistors instead of relays
      and maybe optical sensors for the commutation.

      Thanos M Good point but I wanted to make this as mechanical as possible, and I used the relays because you can see the contact plates moving when the engine is running, they look kind of like rocker arms in an ic engine. I have built two subsequent engines that both use transistors now, but I'm still working on a non mechanical speed controller that uses simple electronics, because I'm not clever enough to understand arduino ;) Thanks for commenting.

      You do not seem like a not clever enough guy, but anyway. The simplest way to build an electronic controller for that would be to use a pulse generator on a counter and a decoder IC to produce an appropriate number of bits with one of them active at a time. Then use this outputs with appropriate diodes in order to fire each transistor during the desirable bits.

    I presume the solenoids are wound by yourself, so can you recall wire gauge used and number of turns?

      Per lo stesso motore di dimensioni, un motore a combustione interna normale si svilupperebbe probabilmente 1000 volte più coppia di un motore solenoide potrebbe. Grazie per il comment.

    What is the function of the capacitors in your design?

      The capacitors work with resistors to form an "RC snubber" (one per solenoid) and their job is to absorb the "back emf" voltage spike from the solenoid coils each time the coils switch off. Without these, the voltage spike would cause sparking and burning of the relay contacts.

      The throttle control is the aluminium plate near the end of the camshaft.

    Wait a minute ... you can convert almost any petrol car to electric by modifying the cylinders only ...

      In principle you could, it's just that internal combustion cylinders generate probably about 1000x more torque than an equivalent size electric solenoid, so sadly it would have very little power.

      True. Besides, it's much easier to convert a car to electric by taking out the engine entirely and putting in a normal electric motor.
