Demand for the dolls has waxed & waned over the years; the 1980s version is just one of several cresting waves in their popularity.) EDIT TO ADD "Who's keeping track of these points?" So glad you liked it, Ashleigh. I worked at Universal Hollywood when it opened there and pretty much every day after my shift I would head over to Hogemead and The Boar's Head Inn for Butter Beer and dinner if I was hungry. I loved that place. Some background notes: The reason Harry lives with the Dursleys during school breaks is that Mrs. Dursley is Harry's mother's sister. And she hated his mom because she was jealous she didn't get a letter to Hogwarts. Lord Voldemort couldn't zap Harry a second time because the killing curse he tried to use on harry rebounded on him and nearly killed him. Professor Quirrell ran into what was left of Lord Voldemort in the dark woods and lived off Quirel as a host body while he was recovering. John Cleese was the first ghost head you saw pop up through the table. Nearly Headless Nick he is a Gryffindor ghost who attended Hogwarts in 1492. So much more fun and scares to come.

Only the first 4 books were out at this time (book 5 didn't come out until 2003 & the 1st movie was released in 2001), but I blew through them like nobody's business (I love to read). The movies are pretty true to the books, but some of the later movies, there's some key elements from the books that are for some reason missing from the movies. One thing I love about Harry potter is that these were stories she wrote and told her children; so each later one gets a little bit more "mature" as the story grew with them. So the first 2 while fun are suitable for 7-8 year Olds and the final ones are teen young adult.

    @Owlaf 2 года назад +2

    So, when you realized John Cleese was in the movie, I can answer that question: he was Nearly Headless Nick, the first ghost character you see popping his head up through the table at the feast.
    Also, "Voldemort" if I recall correctly is pronounced as "Voldemor" with the "t" being silent. Think of Voldemort as in Vole-d-mor with "-Mort" as in "morbid"
    What I did several years ago was I took different Hogwarts House Quizes, because some asked questions that I felt didn't make sense, like they didn't completely relate to the quiz itself or have any bearing on predicting my house. So I took 4 different quizes, and in one of them I was placed in Ravenclaw, the other 3 placed me in Slytherin, so 3/4 I'm definitely a Slytherin. There might be better or more quizes out there now, but I'm not retaking them. You can only be sorted into your house once... taking 4 quizes wouldn't count since I did them all in one sitting.
    Guessing you also never read the books from the HP universe. If not, then there's never been a better time to grab all 7 and get started. :)
    Also also, guessing you didn't notice, but if I recall right, you saw "Alien". Remember the guy with the creature bursting out of his stomach? John Hurt. He played as Olivander in this film, the wand maker who sold Harry Potter his wand.
    Glad you got to see this one. Eagerly awaiting your next Monday Movie.

    I probably won't have much to say this time, so I'll just point out that in the rest of the world, this book and movie is called 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone.' It's called 'The Sorcerer Stone' here because the marketing department for the publisher figured we Americans were too stupid to understand the significance of the Philosopher Stone.
    4:15 - Okay, I guess forget what I said earlier. This series takes place in Great Britain. The school Harry is getting invited to is Hogwarts School of Withccraft and Wizardry. It's one of three major magic schools in Europe. (Incidentally, the major magic school in the U.S. is Ilvermorny, but in the movies it's only had a brief mention in Magical Beasts).
    19:29 - Most of the principle characters are connected to either Gryphindor or Slytherin, so it makes sense that we focus a lot on them. It's also significant that Salazar Slyhtherin was one of the first wizards to advocate that wizards should control the world and muggles should be treated like an inferior race. His followers are the ones that coined the term 'mudblood' to refer to wizards born from a wizard and a muggle (basically the wizard equivalent of the term 'mullato'). Voldemort believed the same and considers himself the 'heir to Slytherin.' Incidentally, this may have been mentioned earlier, but each of the houses is themed around the value it's founder considered greatest: Gryphindor is centered around Courage, Ravenclaw is Intelligence, Hufflepuff is Kindness, and Slytherin is Ambition.
    21:35 - It should be noted that the movie drops a Snape's contribution to the gauntlet: a potion challenge where you have to drink the right potion to pass. In the book Hermione finds the right potion for Harry and takes a different one so she can take Ron back for medical help, but I guess they didn't want a questionable drug reference in this kids movie.
    21:47 - No, Snape just thinks he'd be the best DAtDA teacher (and he's probably right).
    24:25 - Kinda hard to go for the double-tap when your first shot was clapped-back into your face so hard that you became a ghost that had to possess the back of a guy's head. He needed to drink the unicorn blood to stay alive long enough to find the Sorcerer's Stone so he could make the immortality potion.
    25:45 - Go to Pottermore.com, the official Harry Potter page. They have house sorting quizzes there, including one for Ilvermorny if you're feeling patriotic.
    26:38 - I should point out that as the series goes on, the books get longer and more is left out of each movie. Even cutting the last book into two movies didn't completely fix this, so if you really want the whole experience, you need to read the books.

    The fact that you are in the dame position as the main trio, seeing the veil of childlike innocence and wonder lifted to reveal the dark underbelly of the wizarding world is a great touch
    2. The CGI in the early movies was REALLY good for its time, mind you the first 3 came out from 2001. - 2004. so the fact that it holds up so well is crazy
    3. Alan Rickman was a legend. He , unfortunately, passed away in 2016.

Then, the movies started coming out after I was out of college, and again, I thought it was silly. Then, at some point after the fist movies were available to watch on TV, I watched this movie, and my whole world changed. I started reading the books, and I was hooked. I ended up having to pre-order the last few books and waited with mounting anxiety for each one to arrive. As a kid, I really wasn't involved in the hype for the Harry Potter books until I saw the first movie. I think by the time this movie came out Rowling had written the 3rd or 4th book.
    My elementary school reserved the local movie theater for an early morning showing of Sorcerer's Stone on the first weekend it was released. We had the whole building to ourselves because it was before the theater opened for the day. It was free and our school filled three auditoriums. The principal and assistant principal worked the concession stand and handed out free popcorn.
    I started reading the series from book 1 the next day until I was caught up. After that, I bought every book and saw every movie at midnight. My love for this franchise probably would've never happened if my school didn't hold that special showing.

    In the books, the wands that don't "fit" the person trying them don't do anything at all. Not even a negative reaction. Harry just spends like an hour waving random ones to absolutely no effect, before he finally finds one that works, which produces sparks or fireworks when he first holds it.
    Gryffindors value courage, Slytherin values ambition, Ravenclaw values logic/intelligence, Hufflepuff values solidarity/community.
    With very few exceptions, Slytherin House are all evil, or at least selfish.
    It's weird as hell, I swear in the first flying lesson, she clearly tells them to leave the ground and Neville is the only person that does. I guess it is way cheaper to have everyone to stay on the ground and him be the only person who flies away, but it kind of implies that he's the only person actually successfully flying for the first few seconds

    This is the song that the Sorting Hat sings in the book version of Sorcerer's Stone before he sorted the first year's students into their houses;
    "Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
    But don't judge on what you see,

    A smarter hat than me.
    You can keep your bowlers black,
    Your top hats sleek and tall,
    For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
    And I can cap them all.
    There's nothing hidden in your head
    The Sorting Hat can't see,
    So try me on and I will tell you
    Where you ought to be.
    You might belong in Gryffindor,
    Where dwell the brave at heart,
    Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
    Set Gryffindors apart;
    You might belong in Hufflepuff,
    Where they are just and loyal,
    Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
    And unafraid of toil;
    Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
    if you've a ready mind,
    Where those of wit and learning,
    Will always find their kind;
    Or perhaps in Slytherin
    You'll make your real friends,
    Those cunning folks use any means
    To achieve their ends.
    So put me on! Don't be afraid!
    And don't get in a flap!

    To answer your question, it's not in the movie but it is in the book, yes, Professor Quirrell was a real person, he had been a teacher at Hogwarts for a few years prior to Harry's first year, but had taken a year long sabbatical where he went to Albania and encountered Voldemort, then came back to Hogwarts as the Dark Arts teacher, with a Voldemort accessory.
    Also, re: Voldy trying to kill Harry again after failing the first time: it's hard to explain without giving full on spoilers, but Voldemort essentially vaporized when he tried killing Harry, he had no body to do magic with, it took him 10 years to regain enough strength to latch onto the back of Quirrell's head, he is not strong enough to have his own body at the moment.

    Quidditch is a fairly simple game:
    Each team comprises 7 players.
    3 players are Chasers. They chase the main ball (the quaffle) and can score goals. They can pass to each other as well.
    There is a Keeper. They protect the goals. There are 3 goals for each team. 2 on the outside are slightly lower than the one between.
    Scoring a goal requires a Chaser to throw the quaffle ball in to one of the 3 goals of the opposing team. Doing so will gift the team 10 points.
    Each team also has two Beaters. They have small bats and can hit a smaller, heavier ball called a Bludger. Their objective is to hit the Bludger into the opposing team's Chasers.
    And finally there is the Seeker. Each team has a Seeker who's job is to find the Snitch. The Snitch is a bewitched ball, and about the size of a golf ball. They move quickly and try to evade capture. But if captured, the award the team who captured it 150 points and also end the game.
