  • ESPHome provides firmware for an ESP8266- or ESP32-based remote device like a sensor or a switch (and much more). Home Assistant is a home automation hub that controls and interconnects remote devices like sensors and switches.(and much more).
In a previous video ( • ESPHome and Home Autom... ) I showed how I discovered the open source home automation projects #ESPHome and Home Assistant and my first steps into this world. I have learned a lot since and now I am ready to present my automated doorbell project that I already mentioned in that video. The goal is to detect doorbell rings in Home Assistant so that they can be relayed to places where the doorbell cannot be heard.
The doorbell interface YAML file for ESPHome can be downloaded at www.elektormag...

Great information! I’m just starting out in electronics but it’s amazing to see how you went about it and your thoughts throughout the entire process. Thank you so much!

Excellent info. I used this as a template for a couple of mini-projects now. One thing you flew through is the conversion of 12vAC to the required DC voltage with a Large Capacitor, 7805 step-down regulator. Yet another thing I get to learn more about!

You can create services calls directly in esphome. This can be used for actions on a binary sensor.
As for the led, you could have used a door sensor to turn the led off when the door is opened. This makes it more convenient, because you don't have to reset it manually.

A bit convoluted way of doing it the power supply is ok to run the MCU but detection of button press just use an opto to a detector pin on the MCU when it goes low you know the doorbell has been pushed and this will isolate the button

The LED inside the optocoupler would consume precious battery power every time the doorbell is pushed. Just measuring the voltage level is more power efficient.
