This version of Gharbzadegi, from the 2002 Robert Wyatt documentary "Free Will and Testament", is a complete and utter treat, a six-and-a-half-minute journey through musical paradise. I consider Robert Wyatt to be one of the foremost of living British musicians and composers, and I think that my opinion is justified on this piece of music alone, without even considering any of his other wonderful material.
He's a special man, as is his beloved Alfie (contributing lyrics and artwork) He stressed to me that his process was meticulous and this live combination pulls it off wonderfully. I share your view.
Fond of Wyatt since Matching Mole period, forced my jazz/blues band to perform this song in the middle of our version of Coltrane's "Love Supreme". Very appreciated!
I have this album, but have never seen Robert Wyatt perform. I like this song,...what a treat to see it played!! I love this aspect of You Tube!!!! It is a great time to be alive. Instant knowledge,..Instant gratification. Like a dream come true. Matching Mole and Soft Machine rule,...Robert Wyatt,...a distinctive artist.
When dear Robert Wyatt leaves us for his beautiful Eternal Mansion...I will fucking CRY like a Baby! So many Huge losses in the past few years - Great Visionary, and Singular Artists: Mark Hollis...Scott Walker - Wyatt is still amongst us, even though I hear that he is ceasing Musical activity. If there is ONE Human Being I would Love to meet, and have a chat with, it is THIS Man! He is the Wise Uncle I have Never had! I LOVE You, Mr. Wyatt!
I too am not looking forward to that. As in the case of a few other artists, their leaving leaves us with the duty of being better than we think we are.
robert Wyatt has blown my mind since my music teacher turned me on to him when i was 16. He is still making music and i am still loving what i am hearing.
Thanks a million Gardenrug for posting this. It's one of my favourite Robert Wyatt '80s period songs, so what a pleasant surprise to see some live footage of that very song.
Parmi de nombreuses prestations de r wyatt en voici une que je trouve particulièrement significative. Quelques magnifiques constances de ses thématiques .
@mooninjune70 - "In January 2003 BBC Four broadcast "Free Will and Testament", a programme featuring performance footage of Wyatt with musicians Larry Stabbins, Jennifer Maidman, Liam Genockey, Annie Whitehead and Janette Mason"

Adam Smith I'm so glad that I am not the only one to pick up that thread. It made me want to track that Trane track down, or maybe something off Infinity.
Gharbzadegi is still a valid and true concept. Western strategic hegemony is intimately tied to making other countries capitalistic and then trading with them. Countries, like Thailand, come to imitate the Western models and Western criteria in education, the arts, and culture; through the transformation of such countries into post-industrial capitalisms, they turn into a passive market for Western goods and a pawn in Western geopolitics, hence why sex tourism is viewed positively by Houellebecq. It strengthens the dollar and the West at the expense of the dignity of other countries. Persian intellectuals, even before the 1979 revolution when they were Westernized by the CIA-controlled dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, called it “Westoxification” (Gharbzadegi). It will eventually come to an end though. What bothered me about Houellebecq's Platform was how it approved sex tourism in Thailand because it defends the actions on account the prostitutes are paid. Therefore, in Houellebecq’s views, it’s okay for a tourist agency to promote sex tourism because it spreads commerce. I predicted an ******* like Houellebecq would emerge who uses doublespeak as a way to implicitly defend his desire for Western hegemony, based off how it supports his carnal desires.
I get so depressed every time I think of how bad it must feel to be Wyatt. A great drummer in the middle of his career getting paralyzed from the waste down...
Things happen. He's still alive and working, he's got used to his situation. Don't feel that you have to get depressed on his behalf? A great artist, best wishes.
All these years later, and playing this on max vol, I keep putting this recording and this video in my top 3. Has it really been almost forty years? Wyatt and his flux of musical allies have been the background to my life. This video makes me love them all again. What would I pay for a cleaned-up hi-res DVD of this session? It is still comforting to see other fans expressing the same view. BTW. I recent;ly bought and devoured the Robert Wyatt biography by Marcus O'Dair ("Different Every Time") and it is terrific: moving and comprehensive.
By
"Occidentosis (Gharbzadegi) is Jalal Ali Ahmad's tryst with the infinite world of ideas, for which the scene is set in twentieth-century Iran and the background is provided by the vast panorama of the East faced with the onslaughts of the Western civilization."
Oy. We get so out of touch, words take the place of meaning. Fantastic!! The guitarist is credited as: Jennifer Maidman Hmmm...h/sh/it is extraordinary!
I would marry a woman who likes Robert Wyatt's music as much as I do!

Non lo conoscevo... È stata una folgorazione!
Fond of Wyatt since Matching Mole period, forced my jazz/blues band to perform this song in the middle of our version of Coltrane's "Love Supreme". Very appreciated!
And quite right of you, too!
A complete one off. We will never see his like again
Quelle grâce…j’aime tellement l’art qui me fait oublier un fugace instant ma dérisoire décomposition future.
Coltrane´s A Love Supreme goes to a new world through the unique Wyatt´s falsetto, musicianship, imagination. Glorious.
I just realized this was Coltrane, thanks to your comment.

My fondness for the music of Robert Wyatt brought me here.

this assumes we outlive him of course
Simply marvellous! Liam Genocky's drumming is superb and Janette Mason's piano playing rocks like hell! What a joy! Thanks for posting this!
Oh, her dancing pounding fingers --- I made a piano-playing music student friend sit down to watch this.
robert Wyatt has blown my mind since my music teacher turned me on to him when i was 16. He is still making music and i am still loving what i am hearing.
so powerful.
sends shivers down my spine.
amazing! it seems like robert wyatt will never stop with music.
Robert is a great artist!
Artist indeed

Alex Raventós
So, you're spanish.
Amazing stuff - love the little "Sex and drugs and rock n roll" melody that slips in there.
Thanks a million Gardenrug for posting this. It's one of my favourite Robert Wyatt '80s period songs, so what a pleasant surprise to see some live footage of that very song.
... bei dem Song bekomme ich jedesmal eine Gänsehaut
Listening to this whole song and again I'm into music in another new way. The word masterpiece comes to mind.
I keep coming back to this - there must be a reason....
Many thanks for the song!
Brilliant performance!
Thanks for sharing this...
Thanks Robert, this brings really tears in my eyes

What a beautiful piece indeed !
It's so easy to decide on a name
it's a name caller's game
It's so easy to look down from above
Helicopter vision
Get the picture when you're outside the frame
Retrospective my eye
Call it art and you can say what you like
it's a name caller's game
Your perspective describes where I stand
Out of line, out of mind
Calling myopia 'focus', of course,
makes it easier still
Gharbzadegi means nothing to me
Westernitis to you
Every musician here is in synch with Wyatt's attention to detail in order to produce the beautiful outcome. Is there anything finer?
That is so m-- what a heartfelt 'gang' of like-minded allies, in this fragmented world.
Based on a "Love Supreme"? Sounds like it.
Adam Smith I'm so glad that I am not the only one to pick up that thread. It made me want to track that Trane track down, or maybe something off Infinity.
Wow, that never occured to me until now!
Yeah, well the whole Canterbury rock prog scene/thing was deeply inspired by Afro-American jazz music.
... I hear that too ... yep ...
Or atleast the extended 2chord vamp or A section
Glorious - as to be expected from Mr. Wyatt. Equal turns soulful, brilliant and irreverent/probing...he has it all.

Its just a song. Enjoy it
It is not just a song. Never with Wyatt, is it always so much more and Old Rottenhat is a true political album, like it or not
Monster ! (Must listen to the whole album (Old Rotten Hat) right away .)
What fabulous editing
Wow. My favorite Robert Wyatt song. And I had no idea about Jennifer (Ian) Maidman ...
Genius as ever.....
I have a wife who does...and we are happy listen to him togheter

He never mentioned it to me. Have a cup of tea.
Who is the second voice singing with him ?
Oy. We get so out of touch, words take the place of meaning. Fantastic!!
The guitarist is credited as: Jennifer Maidman
Hmmm...h/sh/it is extraordinary!
Actually, it's more like National Health with the soul re-introduced (i.e., Hatfield & The North).
Steeley Span in fact...but also Elton Dean, Annie Whitehead, Jerry Rafferty etc etc.....
does anyone else hear 'sex and drugs and rock and roll' from ~ 2:15 onwards for a bit on the piano?
Yup, Coltrane's A love supreme too, and Ramblin' (Ornette) - the origins of S&D&R&R
Wyatt playing trumpet @5:50?!
