  • We go out of Crystal River on an early December morning to go Gag Grouper fishing. Along the way, we end up with a spun hub in the prop 17 miles offshore. With no working radio, we had enough cell signal to get Sea Tow to come help us. We were able to flag down a guide boat to see if we could reset our motor. After an hour of fishing, Sea tow was to our rescue. We had a two hour tow into shore.

I do feel for you, I am sure you have had better days, but on the bright side, you were luck to still have cell signal on your phone or it could have been worse.

They were great. We were also able to see a charter which told us we could use their radio. The captain also explained everything to the kids. But bought new radio and renewed our subscription 😜

@@robertsonfamilyadventures7082 Seatow is a MUST if you go offshore. My half brother learned this the HARD way.
I went with him and his wife. We went to a oil rig about 12 miles out and having no luck. He wanted to go to a rig about 52 miles offshore. I really didn't want to head that far out, but he insisted.... Whatever lol. We get around 22 miles offshore and the motor just quits. We troubleshoot for about 45 minutes and nothing. I discover he doesn't have enough anchor rope 🤦‍♂️😱🤦‍♂️😱. Luckily we are drifting parallel with the coast. He tries to see if anyone in the area can assist.... Nothing. He says we have no choice but to use seatow. I asked, do you have your membership card handy. He says I have no tow insurance of any kind. I am thinking, are you freaking serious?!?!? You go up to 55 miles offshore and have no towing insurance?
The coast guard will not come unless there is a medical emergency. Seatow informed us they were too busy as members get first priority. Tow Boat US said they would not dispatch until they had a debit or credit card to pre-authorize. And members get first priority. The charge is 450.00 the first hour and 150.00 per hour after. Billing starts from the time he leaves dock and stops when he arrives back. We waited 7 hours in the heat while free drifting. The tow speed was about 10mph heading in. It cost him a little over 1,800 for the tow. He actually expected me to pay half the bill. We got into an argument. I flat out told him it's not my boat and why in the hell would you not buy a 179.00 yearly towing insurance policy???
He left me at the dock. I had to call my wife to come pick me up. He and I didn't talk for over a year (his decision).
I don't care if I had a brand new boat. I will not go offshore without towing insurance. Fortunately, in 18 years of boating. I only needed it once. I was ten miles out when the starter quit. The seatow captain tapped the solenoid and got it going. He followed me in and I paid 0.
