"It made me feel like a little kid again." The movie in a nutshell.
Facts
Recent Disney movies make me feel like a kid again, too … growing up in the Soviet Union, realizing all entertainment is full of propaganda!
Same, I loved it. Can't wait for the sequel 😊
That's for sure. For those that haven't seen the movie, go see it when you can.
Or in a....turtle shell.
I was smiling the entire time I watched this movie. It was SO good. Side note, Jack Black is a national treasure.
💯
He did knick it out the park.
I'm glad the theater was dark, I didn't want anyone seeing my goofy ass smile.
Sonic/Mario crossover must happen, imagine Jack Black and Jim Carrey teaming up as their characters. 🤩
And he wore a Bowser suit at the premiere 😎
The Super Mario Bros Super Show will always be my favorite version of Mario. RIP Captain Lou Albano 🙏🏽
Was a banger too
And the late Danny Wells.
Did you notice the super Mario bros super show theme song at the beginning in their plumbing commercial. Took me back to my childhood. Grew up watching that show as kid. Lou Albano and Danny Wells RIP.
The movie isn't for critics. It's for the kids and fans.
Agreed
Did the fans ask for Mario to be a β XY living with his parents? Did they want Luigi captive most of the runtime to substitute a damsel-in-distress? Was rendering Bowser a simp for Peach actually fan service?
I too was laughing out loud very frequently, and my theater cheered, clapped, and guffawed many times. For me, the nihilistic little Luma in the dungeon was the most consistently hilarious.
There was an entire row of elderly behind me, and they LOVED that Luma. XD
An old lady behind me also loved when it was Luigi's time to shine. You could hear it in her voice; it made me smile harder than the movie did. ^_^
One of the critics: "useless like an unplugged gameboy"
How to be disconnected from reality
Critic sits in theatre: "Okay, let's see what this Mary-o Movie is about... Hm... two brothers. Okay, THAT'S SEXIST right off the bat...! ...Oh, they're blue collar workers, too?!? That's racist against society.
...I don't think he should be wearing a red cap. Especially not one with an M on it - Not in these CONCERNING TIMES that we're live in...! ...So, he's the hero instead of HERR??? Oh, I could tell I'm not going to like all the SEXISM in THIS movie...! They should have REALLY adapted to ...THE NEW NORMAL...!
Oh, so that bad guy is obsessed with a white woman?!? That's sexist and misogynistic, right there...! ...When does he wear a dress??... you know, I've seen NOTHING in this movie in support of the trans community, as of yet... They could've at least made Luigi black...!
I think people were overreacting about this Peach "girlboss" because they've almost nothing they've shown she hasn't already done before in games, especially in RPGs.
My only issue is some of the characterization, she was spunky, sarcastic, it felt more like Daisy than Peach.
I definitely wish Peach had a bit more softness to her voice since she comes across more like a "mom friend" in the games. But otherwise it wasn't too bad. I'm definitely curious how Daisy is gonna be portrayed in the sequel.
I'm in my fifties and I grew up playing Nintendo, Sega, etc. This kid's movie is definitely for me.
It was so much fun
For me too
I saw the movie this past Saturday in IMAX, and I loved it! The references to things like wrecking crew, the og donkey Kong game, and even having Charles Martinet have a cameo in the beginning was all freaking great! I also loved the references with the music cues from games.
I saw Jump Man, I went 'ha!'
Well said, it was so much fun
He's also Mario/Luigi's father in the movie too.
It's obvious what happened with the ratings. Disney can't stand the fact that another animated movie is doing better than them, so they bought off as many critics as they could afford. But thankfully, fans with good taste actually won this round. 😊
In 2023...critics and journalist assume they can still sway opinions, but they can't! They sold their souls for free bees, access and gift bags..sad
The music was really on point especially when. Bowser played the castle theme on the piano..I wondered how many people caught that
Spot on review. It was fun, the pacing was a bit fast for me - but I tend to like stuff that lingers and lets it “sink in”, but that’s personal preference. It was my son’s first trip to the theatre (he’s not even 3 yet) and whispered in awe at every character he recognized coming on the screen (he has a bunch of Mario hot wheels cars). It was adorable AND it held a toddler’s attention from start to finish. How is that not a ringing endorsement of this film?
It has to go a bit faster cause a child's attention is usually not as able to focus.
Critics who complain that there is no story or plot in the Mario movie have missed the literature class in school where they were taught the basic that what a story is.
A story is a descriptive narrative which is the most common way for us humans to tell about things, it can be like "I saw a leaf on a tree and it fell, now it's on the ground." The definition of a good story is that it is clear, simple and light; it has a beginning, a middle and an end (some stories also have an epilogue and a prologue). Every story also has a plot, which is a cause-and-effect relationship used to tell a story and that tells the most important parts of it.
Seeing my childhood come to life on the big screen has me in awe. First Sonic and now Mario, man. We are in for a ride this next decade
The movie made me smile the entire time.
Seems to have done that to a lot of people, me included ! =}
“Make a Metroid movie next.”
Hells yes, brother.
This film made me, a 32 year old man, smile ear to ear from beginning to end. I felt like a kid again through this whole movie. Saw it on opening day with a pack crowd of kids and adults and hearing some of those kids enjoy the film (and the post credit scene afte the credits) made my night.
Now you know how I felt about both Sonic movies, Thorias. Here's to Mario 2 and Sonic 3! 🤞🤞
so they made it for the people that like the Ip
why is this so rare?
Nintendo: making movies great again.
Took the boy yesterday to see it in a packed theatre , left smiles as far as the eye could see. Grandparents to toddlers full of joy.
Honestly this is the most accurate and best review I have seen on this movie
I'm 42 yrs old,and I have SO many memories of playing Mario 1,2,and 3 and all of them are good.i loved the movie, laughed almost all the way through and I couldn't be more happy about the outcome of the movie.also..there couldn't be a better option for bowser than Jack black,he was perfect for the role.
After watching your video, I want to go see the movie. No Woke. I'm stoked.
It's a lot of fun, hope you enjoy it
That could be a good addition to the phrase. "Get woke, go broke. No woke, I'm stoked!"
I saw this movie last week and me and my friends were SO glad that we saw it. It was great! The voice acting was spot on and I turned into a little kid again. And with the after-screen revealing a sequel coming, already hyped!
I will say, stuff like the plot being thin or the random pop songs didn’t bother me too much, as that’s not the kind of stuff I come to a piece of Mario media for. That being said, if the rumors are true about Illumination making a Zelda movie next, and that film turns out have a paper thin plot and random ass pop songs, then yeah, we’re gonna have a problem.
When I saw this movie, it was full with kids dressed up like Mario's and Luigi's running around. It was nice to see and I really enjoyed the movie.
You had me at "F the critics," let's not forget that 'the critics' thought CUTIES was a GOOD IDEA... who gives a rat's ass what these weirdos actually LIKE? When I was in School the biggest contests were if you were a Mario fan or a Sonic fan and now both have great films behind them... Also Street Fighter, though we know how the film for THAT game turned out... GROAN. A PROPER film of Street Fighter could easily be a few films long to do all the characters justice, some of the animated films are AWESOME... also Watch Dogs could be great, maybe Grand Theft Auto though they don't have consistent characters for each game which could make it hard... have you subscribed to Thorias yet? If not I only have 5 words for you... "DO IT ! DO IT NOW!" (Arnie voice). ROCK ON THOR.
Took my son to see this as his first time in a theater. We both enjoyed it, what a fun experience.
Took my wife (who knows fuck all about the games) and my adult son (who was into the games since he was my non-adult son) and we ALL loved it! This is definitely what the eggheads who talk about this stuff call a “four quadrant movie”. And I’m going to address something that my fellow geeks seem to be triggered by like tweeting millennials. I thought Seth Rogan was great as Donkey Kong. I’m adult enough to divorce myself from his personal politics and comments to enjoy his performance. He had one job: portray a big, not so bright, but well intentioned gorilla. And he nailed it. And DK just wasn’t a big ape flinging barrels like in the original game. He has his own arc that paralleled Mario’s. I see these two in a Jack Sparrow/Captain Barbosa relationship in future movies, in that they don’t like one another, but they have a begrudging respect for one another and they’ll always seek an opportunity to give each other cheap shots. And Jack Black. What more can be said? This performance alone, which overshadows his role as Po in the Kung Fu Panda movies, more than wipes the taste of his awful cameo in the Womandalorian. Amazing!
Agree 100% this was a great movie. Went to go see it with my 30 yr old son who has been a Mario fan as long as he can remember and I've played the game way back in the 80's.
I can explain why Chris Pratt was hated on in the beginning in the movie. It was the trailer. You don’t even hear Chris Pratt bad lines in the movie. The trailer really made it seem like chris Pratt didn’t care bout the role and worried everyone but fact he actually nailed it was really noice
Was gonna say the same thing. The trailer didn't convince me and left me skeptical if Chris was the right call for this role.
Well that's one example, another is the Nintendo direct interview of Pratt not knowing much about the games which inspired the movie. Whereas Black seemed to be a fan and played the games with the little ones. So yeah, Chris may a good entertainer, but his role in Mario is eh.
Who's going to say the "video game movie curse" has been broken for the 37th time.😂
Sonic, Castlevania and now Mario....... I think the curse is broken
the hate towards pratt came mostly from the trailers where he sounded like he was just talking, like with the lines from the teaser, especially the "mushroom kingdom here we come" line. But the movie actually made him sound really good as mario.
Bring me Star Foxx!!
Star Fox movie will be a Furrys Wet Dream 😂
Some people are saying Nintendo could do a bunch more movies after this and I agree. One franchise I think would be a problem though is Zelda, simply because Link is supposed to be a silent character. When he did get to talk in the cartoon it came off so annoying and condescending it ruined the idea for a lot of people. I personally think Link should stay silent but then you couldn't really build a movie around him. Not to mention you would get people complaining that the movie is called Legend of Zelda but she's not the main character. Yet another chance for Grace Randolph to show she doesn't know much about these games.
Bring on Zelda! Bring on Zelda!
That and Metroid 😊
Luigi is my *GUY!* I hope he gets a bigger role but maaaaaan, I'm glad they did my *GUY* justice!
He was great in this movie.
Super Mario Bros was indeed a love letter for their fans. It basically said: "Hello, it's me, Mario. Glad to see you again. For the next hour and half we are going to have a blast with a new adventure of myself, my brother Luigi, Princess Peach and the villains while traveling in the Memory Alley". The "professional" critics hated it; we loved it. And for once, it made a valuable service for us: It showed that Rotten Tomatoes are like Rolling Stone or the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame: A Big Fu&%in' Joke. About Super Mario Bros, everbody (including me) had the time of our lives and by the end, we all applauded.
5:34 WHO CARES! Exactly. Chris Pratt is not my friend or relative. I have no interaction with him in my day-to-day life. It's his job to entertain me, not to be someone to model my life after. If he's entertaining me, he's doing his job.
I was really hoping you'd review this and I'm glad you did! Thanks again for your hard work; now and for always:
FOR THE ALGORITHM !!
I'm officially going to catch this on streaming with my niece and nephews - thanks bunches, T!
Just saw it today ^^ I loved it, do think Luigi needed more love (and Peach's girlboss-ness could've been dialed down a teensy bit) but overall it was a ton of fun, especially for me as a lifelong Mario player.
Maybe it's the feeling of being "left out" that all these critics fuel their critisism with?
You're not allowed to have a thing that isn't "inclusive". With a movie based on a game which by the very nature of it, must be about not only winning but also being skilled/accomplished and specialized even; it's only to be expected that a movie made for fans can't be acceptable to those who refuse to get it.
Thanks for the review T.
Can’t wait to see Wario and Waluigi in the sequel. My picks for those two Danny McBride and Michael Péna.
A Metroid movie would be awesome. It ain't never gonna happen, but it would be awesome.
Everyone in the theatre, me and my friends went to see this laughed when Bowser did his song. And yeah, I hope Luigi gets a bigger part in the sequel.
Hell, there can be a Luigi’s Mansion movies. This thing can spin off into so many directions. And we haven’t even touched things like Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, F Zero, Ice Climbers, Animal Crossing, Castlevania, am I missing anything?
METROID MOVIE, PLEASE!!! I know, Legend of Zelda and whatnot, but Metroid is overdue. Not sure who should play Samus, though...
9:18 Brie Larson as Samus.
@natma relnam you can’t fire me o quit.
The movie was great except for one thing Princess Peach wasn't the one Mario had to rescue. You know like in the video games in the 80's&90's. I wish the games would get back to that. Leave the racing in the rearview mirror. I hope john leguizamo is crying himself to sleep every night Super Mario bros. makes 💰.
well, in the comics (and some of the games) Peach was sometimes able to handle herself. In one comic she saved Mario and Luigi by blowing up Bowser's Castle! But, I do think since the Mario Bros are back together at the end of the movie, that the sequel will have Peach kidnapped. Or maybe even Daisy?! :O
@@tenebraequeene I never read the comics. In part two you could play as princess peach. I opted out of playing as princess peach. Because when you jump the wind would catch under her dress you'd jump further than intended. Seeing how this is the first actual movie. They should've had Donkey Kong kidnap the princess. I get Bowser is the more popular and we'll known villain. Those are the only two things I'd change.
The story could have been bit better.
I dont expect something like The Last wish with Mario
But some moments could have been better.
But is good, at a tecnical level is perfect
My brother-in-law didn't like it because 'it just crammed every Mario game together' and 'I didn't like Chris Pratt as Mario'......but commented on the TMNT trailer and said he was perfectly fine with April looking like a homeless overweight black woman....I overheard that when he was talking to his parents.
So....Mario not having an Italian accent, NO! (pretty sure the Japanese VA isn't doing an Italian accent)
But completely butchering April O'Neal? 'I totally get it..(insert bullshit about diversity).
Yeah....
I mean, you Can't do a movie with a story of every single Mario movie.
Making things together is a good way to create something
@Sub Zero There's been alot of changes over the years to the Franchise and the early years weren't exactly a deep storyline.
The original Mario Brothers film will always have a special place in my heart, as my family friend Robert acted in the movie. But this new one was a better film, that didn't require a dose of acid beforehand to understand, and I wasn't annoyed by the celebrity voices like I thought I'd be. Good job! 5/7⭐.
Who did your friend play in it?
@@Adamguy2003 Kind of you to ask. He played Mario Mario. Gone too soon sadly.
@@Naptosis Oh, you mean Bob Hoskins? I always loved his work, he always brought a smile to my face! May he rest in peace.
Super Mario movie made more money in a few days than Shazam 2 did in a month.
True
Shazam is already available digitally, so it must've bombed in theaters.
The “critics” have to attack this movie - they’ve decided to die on Bob Iger’s hill, so any threats to Disney must be dogpiled!
The Movie put a smile on my face, I went with my daughter and granddaughter we were so happy
Jack Black must play Bowser in EVERY media from now on...
Mario & Luigi even did the Kamen Rider kick at the end.
Thats probably gonna be a move in the next Smash movie
I'm excited for the sequel and Mario getting the fire flower finally.
OMG a Metroid Movie! Todays Hollywood would LOVE Samus
Lov your video my dude, absolutely excellent putting the "critics" on full blast.
Even on here. I ALMOST feel sorry for these guys who can't simply be entertained by a simple family movie. To live what must be a very joyles existence.
Grace Randolph needs to get a non working life because she sucks ! She is a shrill shill for the Mouse House
I think Metroid, Kirby, Star Fox,and Zelda are all up for grabs now. With some kind of Smash Brothers at the end, I guess Pikachu would be that film's exclusive character because he finishes the roster of SB.
Excellent review, saw your video from Twitter, now subscribed
It just occurred to me that I often don’t watch your positive reviews to the end because I decide I don’t want it spoiled. I hope that doesn’t mess up the algorithm for you.
I have to see this now. I'm an old school gamer. I used to sneak up at night playing the old Atari 2600 on my black and white tv. Then when I was ten I got me a color tv and my first NES for Christmas. My first one had that stupid robot thing that didn't work so we took it back and I got the version without it. My life really changed and I became a video gamer after that. I still play games to this day. Though I haven't bought any recent games in a while. It's just like comic books. I got them off the spinner racks in the early 80's. I bought them until about ten years ago when they started getting woke. I guess I'm just too old now for modern entertainment. I'll stick with lifting weights and watching RUclips videos. I'll watch this movie though.
Bowser's got SOUL!!!!!😂😂😂😂
I wouldn't doubt that they would do a Metroid movie considering that it's one of Nintendo's flagship titles, though I think they plan on doing Zelda before that. Plus, you forgot that at the end of the credits, you find that Yoshi's egg ended up in Brooklyn and he hatched much like how Godzilla hatched at the end of Universal's movie during the 90s.
I agree with the music. As much as I love the 80’s the music felt out of place. The only character I had issue with was Cranky Kong. Didn’t act or sound like I think he should have. Reminded me more of King Louie from the jungle book rather than a crotchety old ape that will beat you with his cane.
Dang. Cranky is the character I was looking forward to the most.
@@KJYKJY1985 yeah he was the only character disappointment for me
"He goes to church?" Ding Ding Ding. That's the one.
I beat Super Mario 2 and Super Mario 3 but never beat the first Super Mario Bros.
Same
Time to go back
I loved this movie. My kids loved this movie. We watched it twice and I agree, it should make 2 billion at least!
Sonic and Mario were the underdogs that became champions storyline for video game films and they took the world by storm and the studios who brought these characters to the big screen actually listen to the fans(remember the very first trailer of Sonic and fans were quick to put out just how bad it was and the studio took some time to fix it and it became a hit after).
These are two video game films that showed it can be done. But they have a long way to go for we have more failed video game adaptions that were failures and those 2 were the only few massive successes and I hope it continues to do more. Because right now Illumination is pissing into Disney's coffee right now and I love it.
After seeing this film myself all I can say is Jack Black is the MVP playing Bowser for he was the selling point for me due to his voice acting and you can tell he was putting his all in this role and it was my cousin who introduce me to Mario when the Nintendo was on it's way out and it got me hooked. Sonic and Mario are proof that video game films can be done right and I hope they do a StarFox film later down the road.
Grace Randolph's shiniest hour glows brighter and brighter with each passing day.
I hope that we get another one that has Wario and Waluigi
a fuckn metroid movie would be amazing
The Peach in the movie just reminds me of Strikers Peach, which I'm cool with.
The video intro was perfect on how I felt watching this
As a massive Mario fan my wife and I saw the movie on opening night then when we got home, we were compelled to play Mairo 3
I just watched the lates Grace video she made about the piles of money this movie is making....she just pretends like her review never happened.
Keep up the work my friend, love you videos
Yeah she's out of touch
Looking forward to it now! I also agree about a Metroid movie. I think that was the first game i played long enough to beat.
Metriod movie would be so cool, especially if you want a super girl boss. Bouse points for anyone who gets this.
Where are these people who applaud and cheer at the end of movies? In my entire life, I've never heard anyone clap after seeing a film. I can't envision a scenario where it would ever make sense to do so outside of like a premier where the actors/crew are actually present.
That aside, the movie was fine. I'm not a huge Mario fan. I was a Sega kid growing up, and the first Nintendo console I ever owned was an N64. I think the only Mario game I've ever actually played was Mario 64, but I was still able to have a good time with it.. I know Mario and Luigi, and Princess Peach, and Toad. I know Bowser/King Koopa, and the goombas and koopas. I know the green mushroom makes Mario bigger, and the fire flower lets Mario shoot fireballs, and the raccoon/tanuki suit lets Mario fly, although for the life of me I couldn't remember what the star did until the very end of the movie. I also know Rainbow Road and the cat suit and a fair few other things just through gamer cultural osmosis. But I think the movie would probably have hit me harder if Mario was an integral part of my childhood.
I'd still rate it a B+ though. If nothing else, the fact that a movie can still get made that loves and appreciates its fanbase makes me happy. There wasn't any pretentious subversion or deconstruction of the characters, or any thinly-veiled contempt for the audience like you often get from Hollywood when dealing with things like this. It was a movie made BY people who love the games FOR people who love the games.
Thorias is a Accurate Reviewer.
Well, my interest in seeing this just spiked 100%. the Guys over on Knight's Watch were saying Peach was too much of Girlboss and i figured that would override the whole thing.
I like Shad, but Knight's Watch crap on everything because it gets views.
Great opening statement and overall review. Thank you
Took my son last Friday and it was great to both of us, and like you said at the end everyone stood up and clapped
They were actually gonna put that stuff in, with Peach being the lead and Mario the babbling idiot but apparently Nintendo said "hell no!!! " and we're very attentive with the production.
I would say more that it's made for children of Mario fans. It has recognizable elements, it adapts the basic story to how the Mario mythos for the lack of better word has developed past four decades, and reconciles them with current cultural attitudes (which is why Luigi is the Damsel in Distress) and Hollywood's obsession with Strong Female Characters and origin stories.
This bodes well for getiing a good Metroid movie, but not so much for a the Legend of Zelda one.
I only wished it was longer, but I loved it.😊
So the critics and fans saw different movies, huh?
EVERY SHOWING OF THE MARIO MOVIE IS PERSONALIZED
Chris Pratt hate started as ''why he is voice of Mario since we have Mario VA''
Hell Charles Martinet plays as Jump man in this movie
Then they add extra stuff
Besides MK 95, this Mario movie are my two favorite video game movies easily. And the critics are beyond stupid, just saying lol ever since the Captain Marvel fiasco I stopped taking critics seriously with everything after that. IMO critics should be educated properly, have at least some knowledge before judging these movies but at the end of the day it's the audience scores that mean something, not the critics.
next 3 nintendo movies will probably be metroid Starfox and obviously Zelda I do predict we are going into a golden age of video game movies if we are not there already
Metroid is at the top of my list of most wanted adaptations
You’re speaking 100% facts in this review and I couldn’t agree more. While the Super Mario Bros movie isn’t the most complex or deepest piece of cinema out there, it’s pretty much everything I could’ve asked for in a…well, *Mario* movie. It’s an entertaining, fun and lighthearted romp that kept me entertained throughout its entire runtime and tickled my nostalgia bone with all its references and adoration to the source material. Which’s the best thing anything could do for a videogame adaptation, and basically a night and day difference between this and that horrid 90s Mario movie.
Taking our kids to this on Tuesday can't wait to see it. My husband and I want to see it as much as our two sons who are 6 and 4. Early Birthday present for our 6 year old son who will be 7 soon he loves Mario games. Plays Luigi's Mansion, Mario Odyssey, and Mario Party he's pretty good at all of them already too.
Completely agree with everything you said all the way down to "make a metroid movie"...
They can cast Anya in that one too if they want, I think shed make a great Samus as long as its not the zero suit version.
Not that Anya is not nice to look at, but shes a couple of sizes to... well, not Samus, something the full suit would easily conceal.
Damn right
Metroid and Zelda movies would even be bigger than the Mario movie, much bigger chance for a more mature story as well as fitting the sci-fi and fantasy niches comfortably.
Strong complex stories have never been Illumination best trait, but those only work if it fits and is enjoyable. Lightyear & Strange World failed on that front. So yeah this was a fun but average movie and hopefully if their is a sequel they can improve on the story
Great review sir
The next movie is a Zelda one, that one is apparently well under production. And as much as I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE a Metrroid movie, odds of that are very low. It's just not popular in Japan as a franchise. We're lucky we got Dread.
