When the lady drinks from the "invisible" glass of water, we are seeing it from Ted's perspective, and his brain blocks water because of the trauma he had. When we see from another perspective, the glass is there again. She wrote "run" not because he's in danger, but because they let him roam free during the roleplay and as a patient that's the chance he has to escape. Also notice how the shots of Ted and the other patients during the interview always have a guard behind them, Chuck doesn't have one. These are some of the hints the movie gives us all the time that Ted is actually a patient. Brilliant details.
One of the saddest parts of this whole thing is that the head doctor (Ben Kingsley's character) thinks his experiment didn't work, when it in fact did. It's just Leo's character couldn't live with the truth and pretended to regress so that they would lobotomize him and he wouldn't remember the trauma, guilt and pain
yeah but imho he made it pretty clear to Mark Ruffalos character it worked but he just cant live with himself so i suppose he told it to the doctor afterwards
That might not be necessarily true. I don’t think he made that choice because he can’t live with what he did. Leo wants to choose his own fate and realizes he might regress at another point in time. So he decided to go out on his own terms. You might be right though idk
Brilliant movie and so happy this is your first Scorcese. The humanity of this film comes through with additional viewings. You really see the role play and the different comfort levels of the staff (remember the laughter and smiles in the interrogation?). The fact that some of the patients were game for the role play is so cool, but they hit breaking points. This movie is really about the power of the mind to self-deceive, because of pain/grief. And I believe he consciously ends his life at the end because he knows he is a monster, and he can’t trust his mind. So beautiful and humane.
Gabriel lopes!!!! How many times did you say... I have a crazy theory 😂😂😂 I was like.... spit it out woman!!!! This is a great movie and had so many twists n turns that you had to keep a record of and have an open mind. Good reaction team. ❤
What's crazy is that not only does Leo break down as he learns the truth, but so do we the audience. As the protagonist, we trust that everything he sees and hears is true, but this movie takes that a brilliantly betrays that. I don't think Mark Ruffalo got enough credit for his performance here. He's a truly talented. You guys outta put Zodiac on your list.
It's shocking to me this is the first time I noticed the moment he called him Teddy at the end, Andrew didn't turn around cos it wasn't his name at all...
Also guys the lake story was the real way his family died, the apartment getting burned down by a firebug was just what he told himself to separate himself from the truth
One of my most favorite movies of all time. I think that's Leo's best role ever, and he wasn't even nominated. It is also very rewarding on a rewatch, you start to see a lot of details and hints Scorsese has put into the movie and start to question how could you miss it for the first time 😂 I highly suuggest you "Dogville", that's a Lars von Trier movie starring Nicole Kidman. Probably the best try to unpack a human nature on screen, also in very unusual but interesting visuals.
Great reaction and really enjoy you two breaking down your thoughts. This movie had me doing mental gymnastics on the way home from the theater the first time I saw it 😂
I have schizophrenia and although not as severe as Teddy's I also suffer from delusions, paranoia, hallucinations and dissociation. You are absolutely convinced that something is true when it's not, no matter how far fetched or extreme it may be, and no amount of rationale or evidence to the contrary can convince you otherwise. It's absolutely awful. The key to keeping your symptoms under control is medication, constant therapy and a loving family who support you. Such a fantastic movie.
one of my most favourite films ever! also, it surprises me so much, how so many people get confused by the ending, i think it's incredible straight-forward and leaves no room for interpretation. great reaction as always, guys!
"Ooooh my gosh oooh my gosh ooooh my gosh ooooh ooooh ooooh my gosh whaaaat oh my gosh oh my gosh Oooh muh gawd ooooh my gat i new knew it siiiigh gosh ooooh my gosh wow oh my gosh oh my gosh wow so sad my gosh wooooow oooof waaaow oh gosh oh muh gahduh oh gawd man oh man oh man oh gosh waooow" Incredible reaction very wow oh my gosh
I've been hoping for you two to react to this movie since I knew it would be perfect for analysis, especially how deeply you look at the symbolic / philosophical aspects of movies, BUT this is definitely a movie that takes multiple viewings to really understand. That said, it was really enjoyable listening to your take on it, especially Gabriella's theory on all of it being made up to prevent him from accepting the reality that he set a fire that killed his family. I don't think that's technically the reality of the situation, but it's a great theory. This is definitely something you should watch again and pay attention to both the water and fire. You were onto something about the ash and smoke, but there's really strong symbolism with fire and water, with fire representing the fake reality he created, as every time fire is present he begins hallucinating. Meanwhile, water represents the truth, and he even experiences resistance to the "truth" when he is near water, such as getting seasick, or having migraines, or how the storm is "threatening" to kill them. His wife drowned their children, so water, in this case, is the reality that he rejects. It's also not a continuity error that the patient drank from the cup of water and the cup wasn't actually in her hands. Kudos for catching that, too! It would be cool if sometime in the future you did another watch of Shutter Island for the channel, but less of a "reaction" and more of a commentary/analysis as the scenes unfold, even pausing it to really lay your thoughts out. Might not be a super popular video for the channel, but it would be fun! Especially because it sounds like you have lots more to say about this! There's a ton more I'd like to respond to but this was such a lengthy reaction, I don't think it's possible to cover everything. So I'll just say your whole back-and-forth was very entertaining and I'm thrilled you guys got to experience this awesome movie and it sparked such an engaging conversation! Also, to the comments about how Peter denied Jesus three times - check out John 21:15-17. After Jesus' resurrection the disciples sit with Jesus on the beach and Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him, but He specifically asked Peter three times: "Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” I'm certain that there's some scholarly opinions on this that I'm not aware of, but this is just something I personally noticed, although it was not said directly, but Peter denied Jesus three times, and here, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him. To your guys' point about forgiveness and acceptance and ultimately, true love, I think this perfectly exemplifies Jesus letting Peter know that his denial had been forgiven and all that mattered now was to love others. Just some thoughts!
Amazing movie and reaction guys! One of my absolute favourites, mind bending from start to finish. One detail to notice is throughout the film, water reminds Leo of the reality of what happened & Fire enhances his delusions. Now watch similar masterpieces in the psychological thriller genre - Fight Club, Seven, Prisoners, Zodiac, Inception, Memento.
Oops, it just always feels like such an instinctual thing to say haha😂 Cause you had a sneaking suspicion or a little idea of it, but you didn’t REALLY know - Gabi
Absolutely love your discussions at the end, especially for films like this. Can't wait for you to dive into Scorsese's filmography. Highly recommend "Taxi Driver" and one of his more underrated/underseen works "Bringing Out The Dead".
Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon. It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again. As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”. No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world. An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.
That cabin by the pond is in Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. I've been in it many times. My late wife's family helped build it back in the day. In real life it's just an empty shell with a fireplace - just a place for bikers and hikers to get out of the rain. But the filmmakers did a great job dressing it out so it looked like someone actually could live there. Nice location.
I absolutely love how deep you went into the possible interpretations. If you want another awsome movie to dive deep into. Try "The King Of Comedy" by Scorcese as Well. He his a master of portraying human emotion in a deep and real way. King of comedy is gonna be a treat for you guys!
Good for reacting to this great film. Your theory that all of it was something he imagined is not something I thought of, it's possible of course but I think the Institution patients and staff, him being a patient playing out a delusional character and how his kids and wife died is real. The fire story of Laeddis doing it is him making it up to forget about the truth and Chuck not being able to get the gun out is just because he's a doctor and not an agent. Also the fire represents him hallucinating while water represented reality. The best Scorsese films that you should definately react to are Taxi Driver, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Departed.
This was one of my favorite movies when I first watched it. And then the 2nd time I watched it I loved it even more. But for some reason after that I can't go back and watch it anymore. It doesn't feel right.
The best part of the movie is the true answer is BURIED in the minute details of the ending… because there is a set answer and it’s in one detail that’s both obvious and not 😅
I've heard that some of the Allied Soldiers who were the first to discover Auschwitz, I can't imagine how they would have a 'sane' reaction after seeing the atrocities that were committed there. I forgot to mention that this movie, is such a difficult movie to watch because it is just really sad. 😢
Amazing movie, also fairly unknow it seems. Also i feel you on Titanic take Caley. I was putting Titanic at side for such a long time, cuz i thought its just romantic drama/comedy (ignorant i know). And just watched it few years back, and not gonna lie, one of the best movies I've watched. Love the reaction as always!
There are some good vids on utube of Shutter Island Explained, highly recommend watching few of those to really understand the plot. You picked up on a couple things, like the disappearing glass. That was deliberately put in among other clues, like the "marshal" struggling to unholster his gun etc. This is definitely a film worth watching at least twice, as after watching it once you will pick up.on more stuff like this you may of missed in first watch.
Are you planning to do movie polls for the viewers go choose which movie you should react to? Or do you think it's better to react to what you're genuinely interested in, even if it isn't super requested
Just about to watch so I don't know how much yall enjoyed it, but if it turns out that you like this kind of movie.... pleeeassseee please check out all the miniseries Mike Flanagan made (Dr. Sleep, Hauting of Hill House, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, Fall of the House of Usher [in order]). They're all horror, and they're all the deepest most soul-wrenching and story / twist rich pieces of Art I've ever consumed. And I consumed a lot. Also, although they do have some jump scares sometimes (I'd say an average of one per series, really), those all integrate into the story and server a purpose. You guys would have a field day probably with each episode but I'd recommend watching them whole and talking at the end. They all explore different emotions and human characteristics quite beautifully!
Gabriela lopes does she has portuguese or brazilian origins? Because Lopes with a S and not a Z it's the portuguese way to write it. I say that because i'm portuguese with a part of my family who is brazilian
Hahahah, the theory of him inventing everything, even the island and every single person, thus the whole movie isnt real except for him, … is a bit of a stretch, to say the least. Often times its simpler than that, dont look for zebras, look for horses. At the end he does know what happens. He’s lucid, and decides to be lobotomized and put an end to the suffering.
This is not "the craziest movie ever", stop exaggerating like children. Everything is "crazy" or "insane" to young people, nothing is just great, good, funny, fantastic, bad, sad or anything, just "crazy" and "insane".
Hey bro a while ago I had asked you guys to react to to a movie and you guys did it legit the next week I forgot which but I was so happy. Now there’s a sequence of 3 movies I would like y’all to watch all 3 are amazing and I think you both would love because of the meaning behind them it’s planet of the apes 2011,2014,2017 it’s a sequence I would be so grateful to watch your reactions to it. Respect and love🤍🖤🙌🏼
So I haven’t watched this channel since the “incident”. I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the wardrobe changes. I am glad the two of you are working things out and are more conservative. I think the lady is a million times more attractive in her choice of wardrobe here. Kudos and I think the two of you are great.
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 if you’ve been following them and knew what happened about a year ago, you wouldn’t think it was weird. They know what I am talking about.
One of the greatest movies in my opinion, cant wait to watch the reaction!👍
It's in my top 10 of all time, absolute phenomenal.

The reason Chuck couldn't pull the gun from his holster is because he's a psychiatrist not because he's a figment of imagination lmao

So I haven’t watched this channel since the “incident”. I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the wardrobe changes. I am glad the two of you are working things out and are more conservative. I think the lady is a million times more attractive in her choice of wardrobe here. Kudos and I think the two of you are great.
Weird comment
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 if you’ve been following them and knew what happened about a year ago, you wouldn’t think it was weird. They know what I am talking about.
Incident?
Great! It is very interesting to see your detailed reaction to the film Robocop 1987. This is a cool movie 👍🔥🦾
