    Spot on, Chris. I experienced this with a ‘91 Chipper Jones DS last year. Took a chance and bought one raw for a good price, sent to PSA and it came back a 6. Recent comps at the time were 300-400, I listed mine at 650 OBO. Had a few offers near comps and within a week or two someone BIN for the full price.
    There weren’t any other 6s listed on eBay at the time, so a collector was willing to pay my price.

      @Sam Hill, what is a 91 Chipper DS card?

    • @sammyhill93
      @sammyhill93 Год назад +1

      @@justingodfrey4063 I’m referring to the Chipper Jones RC from the 1991 Topps Desert Shield Set. The set is much more rare than the regular 1991 Topps set- they only issued it to soldiers overseas during the Gulf war. However, there was a good number that never left military bases in the US.
      At any rate, the DS Chipper Jones has a PSA 10 pop count of 32. Compare that to the 5625 pop count of the regular Chipper Jones Topps PSA 10 and it becomes clear which one is more rare.

    Hi Chris. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years now and have always found them to be as entertaining as they are informative and I appreciate your ability to explain various aspects of the hobby in a clear, well-thought out manner, but this is the first time that I have taken the time to comment because this video struck me as particularly informative because your breakdown and comparison of these two examples was perfect. Thanks for all you do for the hobby. Your first-hand experiences, knowledge and various specific approaches to collecting, investing and dealing are presented in a clear and concise manner with no ridiculous hype, antics, shouting and shenanigans that so many other collectors like to put on display in their vids. I last about 5 seconds, (3 seconds too long), into one of those. Thanks again, and I’d like to continue posting comments. Take care and Happy New Year!

    Economics 101: Law of Supply and Demand. My collection strategy has been simple. Look for a high demand player and that player’s low pop cards (RC SP/serial numbered, hobby only, high grade, etc). Doesn’t need to be expensive. The thrill is to find those gems for cheap. Buy low then sell high. I built up a free collection this way. 💎 💎 💎

    One of the best sets, if not the best set, of a very important 96'97 year. Paved the way for serial numbered cards. Also, having arguably the best NBA draft class of all time helps the value too. Even though it's worth less, a Credentials Kobe is many times rarer than a Chrome Refractor. It's a condition sensitive set so it makes high grades even rarer - that Grant Hill at $645 was a bargain.

    I’ve tried using a similar strategy in some lower end cards $50-300 range. It’s so much harder to move the very niche cards and I’ve gotten stuck with a few or taken less than market value just to move it. Not knocking it at all as I’m a fan of more niche cards/players. But just something to keep in mind if this is going to be your investment/flip strategy. To sell a card, you have to have a buyer, for more obscure/rare cards, there’s not a ton of buyers out there

    That’s my problem with COMC, they won’t contact their customers and tell them their prices are outrageous or just that they have potential customers willing to pay market comps. The two terms I use are Rare and Scarce. Rare memorabilia has low population with little interest and scarce is low pop with high demand.

    Excellent analysis! I have used this myself, but on the buy side as well. If I see what I believe is a potential bargain on a short print or low pop card of an established, reasonably popular (but not super popular or in-demand) player (or personality, as I buy non-sports cards as well), I consider purchasing the card. Then, I can do as you pointed out, and set my own price. My best example of this is when I purchased multiples of an autographed Joey Chestnut rookie card from a Canadian seller. The cards were factory sealed (so in great condition) and their production was limited to 90. Bought them for $18 each. I figured that there would be some level of interest for his autograph, especially around July 4. Sold my first one a while ago for $300.

    One thing I really notice when people try to “comp” a card they don’t look at other factors of a “comp” that may have affected it selling for less then it’s worth for example
    - was the seller someone with low eBay feedback?
    - were the sellers pictures horrible?
    - was the listing incorrect in any way so it was hard to find for potential buyers?
    - did the auction end at a weird time of day?
    All of these factors could lead to a card selling less then it’s average sell price, so these all need to be considered when comping a card.

His is one of the prime examples of buyers overpaying in the beginning, that card will probably continue to drop either way. Even if it does come back up some next year, it won't be at this level.

    Insightful as always, Chris! I think the key phrase you used in this video was "from the perspective of the buyer". The eBay sellers, card show dealers and card shop owners who have that line of thinking will naturally do better than those who sell out of what is convenient or comfortable for them.

    Another factor to consider is this just isn't the time to sell period. Part of the reason the prices have dropped is because many are panic selling instead of waiting it out. The economy of course is a factor but those who have been in this hobby a long time like you Chris realize everything is cylical. The Covid boom was too fast of a spike and what the hobby needed more was a steady increase over say a 5 year period. I won't sell my great vintage or better cards now. I feel the hobby will rebound in time and the vintage, GOATs, and older sealed wax will stand test of time. One problem in this hobby still is people foolishly paying more for current hyped players over proven players and HOFers. The Luka vs Hill comparison also needs to take into account that POP reports aren't accurate because the Luka has been cracked and resubmitted many times and PSA counts those resubs even though it's the same card. That should be noted.

    • @richardbianco9674
      @richardbianco9674 Год назад +2

      They wouldn't know though. Either they are resent in already cracked or they were going thru a cross grading and they started in another company's slab. They all need to institute a way to remove cards from pop counts by submitting a pic of the label maybe

    • @fijianplaya11
