Scott Rockenfield is understated. He's a huge part of Ryche. If they would have had a typical hair-band drummer they wouldn't have had the same success.
Scott isn't and wasn't a drummer. Like brother Peart, he is a percussionist. He doesn't bang on drums, he plays rhythmic melodies on par and in sympathy with any voiced instrument.
Scott is one of the greatest summers of all time, most people then didn't have a clue who he was, and now (2024) people don't even know the name Queensryche. It's a damn pity.
Bought this in Bangkok the week it came out, fond memories of touring the country listening to this on a walkman. The strange mixture of beauty and chaos to be found in Thailand was a great backdrop for the tunes.
This band created their own genre with each album release. This album is no exception - and it has no peers, no successors. It is stand-alone and the peak. One could surmise they outdid themselves. Mindcrime was a story, a movie you could sit back and watch the characters develop while they interacted with themselves, their destinys and their tragedies. Promised Land enters you - you host it. It invades and explores you, and you allow it. You wonder, while listening, how it knows so much about you - and you are compliant while watching it dig even deeper. Reaching the darkest places. A certain unease crops up here and there, usually between songs, but then you feel safe to allow the next journey. Is music supposed to make you feel this vulnerable one minute, and then this cleansed the next? Each time you listen, it seems to know more about you. A point exists where it stops learning you and begins showing you, and you realize that a relationship now exists. This is a tool with which you can purge 'life' and be re-born to a certain extent. It will cancel your failures, herald your achievements, and allow you to go forth the next day knowing that nothing can be worse than what was revealed, and nothing will be better. It just will be, and it is your duty to live it.
I just came across this and I am so glad. Promised Land has always been my favorite album by Queensryche. I am so sad with what is going on with the separation of the band. Watching this made me quite sure that Chris was the glue that held this group together and kept everybody sane and happy. Maybe I will wake up tomorow and he will be back, Geoff will be sane again and this will all have been a bad dream??? Lol, I wish.
you're half right... their last great album as a whole was PL... they have had plenty of really good tracks on albums after this, q2k,tribe and AS are really good. your not a true fan..... blog your bullshit somewhere else...
Watching this wonderful video just makes circumstances of their current situation even more heartbreaking. Listening to them complimenting and supporting one another and watching them create their music....WOW....what happened??? Chris leaving this band was the beginning of the end and Geoff's continual goal of steering them away from metal has been sad to witness. "Queensryche Cabaret"??? Please. I'm so grateful there are gems like this video to remember and replay.
thanks, interesting and revealing stuff. Wanted to say Queensryche is Geoff Tate for concepts and vocals, Chris Degarmo for concepts and music, and Michael Wilton for the more METAL elements + plus the killer rhythm section they have. Not just one guy...but im excited about the new lineup as well
Great to see first rate musicians engaging in the creative and recording process , when major bands would spend time together in dedicated recording studios. Now they can all do it at home in their bedrooms , with a laptop and some pro tool programs. How things have changed.
Thanks for uploading this! My favorite Queensryche album, they were at their creative peak. Sad to see how things have turned out with Geoff vs the rest...Chris did the right thing when he left.
Man, I miss this band. Promised Land and Hear in the Now Frontier were too many years ahead of their time. Wasn't a big fan of either album when they first came out, but I've listened to them a lot over the last 5 years. Each listen brings something new.
Im not sure why it would be depressing. Nothing lasts forever. Led Zeppelin didn't last half as long and were already working less before Bonham passed. I think Chris changed his musical direction during Empire with Silent Lucidity and Bridge. He may have been the catalyst for which Geoff worked with. Everyone likes to blame Geoff for the music, but there are 4 other members who had that choice.
Thanks so much for posting this. As one of the only Queensryche fans who never enjoyed Empire as a whole, Promised Land has always held a special place for me. Great and under appreciated album. I'm one fo the fiew people who like a good deal of ther post-Midcrime catalogue. But this will always stand tall as one of their best.
Thanks for putting this together. These guys were my favourite band for 5 years. In light of recent events it reminded me what makes these guys so amazing. They made it work better than most for many years.
Even though I love this album and all the ones before it, this is depressing to watch. Reminds me of when Chris was such a driving force behind the band and Geoff seemed to get along with everyone.
Great video, provided some perspective and insight back in the day when there was a group effort, what a great band they once were in the original incarnation of the band.
Great piece and thanks for posting. The band at their peak. In my opinion reflective of where they were then as opposed to where they are now and the quality of the finished product. Then functioning TOGETHER and writing songs TOGETHER resulting in a very tight album versus the dysfunctional half-assed methods of recent years.
In tis album, this guys created a very unique sound. A world on its own. I think this is the pinacle of the Tate-Degarmo era... after this they should have splitter to coma back a few years later and take it from there... Creative processus needs sometimes to take air and distance... I miss that time too...
Love me some Promised Land...don't get me wrong, Empire might be my favorite (ignoring OMC of course) but Promised Land gets trashed by a lot of people undeservedly.
To be honest, Promised Land "grew" on me.........not that I totally hated it to begin with. As the years went by, I just really connected with the theme of the entire album. "Promised Land" was not something many teens (including me) would grasp.
Hillena , you're no one! GFY . Your comments and opinions don't mean shit to me. Good blog and bother someone else. You responded MONTHS after this post. Lol. This is my last response. I have better things to do with my time than discuss things with a simpleton
This is the masterpiece of the band and of that decade... how on earth is a band supposed to follow this ? from Rage for Order to this you see the perfect almost alchemical growth from the band on every album... few bands achieve it but sadly this is where it ended also but what an end ! after this album is survival mode...
I bought promised land back in 1994 so after the mindcrime & Empire tapes this was hard to get used to, I like most of the songs it was darker & slower it wasn't a Rocking lp but it was interesting. cool to see they were playing Desert strike at 18:18 i was playing that in late 93/early 94. they should have released a DVD of this back in 97-98. it would be cool to see the making of Mindcrime since that was their Best one. should have been more music recording footage but this was cool to watch
everytime i hear the song promised land it makes me wish that queensryche were still the band they used to be. it brings back a lot of memorys jsut hearing that song.
it actually charted higher than Empire on the US billboard 200 and went platinum. Pretty good considering. It's a shame it was really their last true collaborative effort. HITNF was Chris clearing out his locker and flying tf outta there like a buddha.
I loved this album. Just because it wasn't a huge commercial success doesn't mean it wasn't great music. I actually prefer this one to "Empire". Much more experimental. Disconnected is one my favorite Queenryche songs along with The Bridge. The recent turmoil is a shame. But the new singer sounds pretty damn good. Geoff has always apparently been a tough person with whom to deal. Sad.
Promised Land is way better then Empire. Just diddn't have the 10 hit to show for it. Seen them live in 1995 awesome show. they did seem to lose that mystery and intensity feel to there music after Chris left. Lucky to see them again in 2011 before Geoff left/fired however you want see it
Awesome clip! They were very much in their A-game for this record. A shame that it all tapered off after this, but nonetheless..twas a great record and I miss that time.
Geoff should see this in regards to working with your bandmates on an album---since then, he's used outside writerspost DGarmo, that new album FU is just a trainwreck with no definitive direction---I'm looking forward t the REeal QR's release in June
The disconnect he mentions here between humans and nature is why I have become a Pagan. It's nothing to do with any strange or dangerous cult, it is to reset myself in the world of what is natural and how I am a human being who now yearns to be in nature and playing my part. I try seeing the world as a beautiful gift of which I belong. I meditate and try my best to align myself balancing the techno world forced on me and living as close to nature as possible. Just going to the woods and finding somewhere very quiet to listen to the ambient sounds to walking along the beach looking for all the signs of life that just pass me by if I was not paying attention. Its crazy what we are doing to our planet where 'abrupt climate change' could wipe 50% of all life of this place in the next 50-60 yrs if we don't do the right thing. If we fail it will take millions of yrs for this biodiversity to make a comeback and surely there wont be any humans around to sit and wonder what a gift this world is. If you want to make a difference then educate yourselves about this plight and then complain to your governments and talk to the people you know about it. If you just get one person to listen and see it for themselves then that seed is planted and many others will pay it some attention.
Empire is super mainstream commercial sounding...Empire is kind of like ordering take out rather than putting in the work on a really great recipe which was Promised Land...gratifying and good for the soul. Until they all had to do the dishes. They should have thrown in the towel once Chris said adios. Could have avoided all the b.s. afterwards.
Promised Land is such a great album. I think at the time it came out, the hideous grunge scene killed all the really great band's. I just recently replaced this CD and I love it. RYCHE N ROLL FOREVER!
I love the promise land album and I loved the live show. To me it is so sad to hear people taking about how nothing after mind crime lived up to its standards. poppycock, its every bit as good if not better. Chris? All of the so called Guitar Gods would do well to take lessons from him.
"This" Queensryche is and will always be my favorite band!!
Given the subsequent divorce and break-up of classic Queensryche, I really feel this is a case of "remember us this way"
🎯
Promised Land is such an underrated album...dark, eerie, and moody. It really takes you away somewhere else.
I was like wow they look a lot alike and their compositions are sophisticated , very much alike in a lot of ways
Its nowhere near as good as the previous three.
@@m2svirtual384 he looks as if he could pass for Neil's brother ! now that ya mention it
Scott is one of the greatest summers of all time, most people then didn't have a clue who he was, and now (2024) people don't even know the name Queensryche. It's a damn pity.
Gee, Scott is not a SUMMER.
I loved this album. Must be played with headphones on for maximum effect.
Chris just seems like the nicest guy, just loves to be making music and flying.
James Loy ,Indeed. I love that while he's on stage performing, he's always got a beautiful smile on his face. He seems like a truly happy man.
I miss the band, the original band. Especially Chris, he brought an energy that no ones been able to replicate or even evolve on top of.
Bought this in Bangkok the week it came out, fond memories of touring the country listening to this on a walkman. The strange mixture of beauty and chaos to be found in Thailand was a great backdrop for the tunes.
For me it was London, this in my headphones all the time when I was riding double deckers across the city, walking around in Camden.. great memories.
This band created their own genre with each album release. This album is no exception - and it has no peers, no successors. It is stand-alone and the peak. One could surmise they outdid themselves. This album was so mature. They weren’t trying to be complicated for the sake of being complicated. It was all about sound, tone and mood. I love it!
Absolutely! Pure natural born genius.
I just came across this and I am so glad. Promised Land has always been my favorite album by Queensryche. I am so sad with what is going on with the separation of the band. I love every song on this album & was especially blown away by “ someone else “.
glad they devoted some time to Scott even though it's like 3 minutes
What a shame that Queensryche couldn't go the distance with the original members .
Thanks for the upload Judezki (Y)
One of my favorite CDs ever, of any artist.
Truly their last great album. There are a handful of standout tracks on Hear in the Now Frontier. Anything after Chris left is dead to me.
you're half right... their last great album as a whole was PL... they have had plenty of really good tracks on albums after this, q2k,tribe and AS are really good. your not a true fan..... blog your bullshit somewhere else...
David Hill Why are you getting butthurt over someone else's opinion?
the last Cd I have bought was this....Lost me after that too, I am sad, But nothing remains the same and I was sad to see them split....
ScarletVoodoo Same for me, It ended with promised land NOT the breakup with tate
+ScarletVoodoo My feelings as well. HITNF was a heartbreaking disappointment. Guess their deal with the devil ended with PL
DAMM THE BAND NEEDS TO REVISIT THIS AND SEE WHAT THEY HAD TOGETHER..
I love this group. This particular recording is different, but just as great as everything else they have done.
Scott and Chris. Super talent.
Watching this wonderful video just makes circumstances of their current situation even more heartbreaking. Listening to them complimenting and supporting one another and watching them create their music....WOW....what happened??? The last Great Ryche album.
I think Hear and Now was the last great album :)
thanks, interesting and revealing stuff. Wanted to say Queensryche is Geoff Tate for concepts and vocals, Chris Degarmo for concepts and music, and Michael Wilton for the more METAL elements + plus the killer rhythm section they have. Not just one guy...but im excited about the new lineup as well
Promised Land and its tour was not a let down. Different and so solid.
Very unfortunate that things ended the way that they did. What a shame.
I remember listening to this album waiting and waiting for dynamics and changes in tempo.
Man, I miss this band. Promised Land and Hear in the Now Frontier were too many years ahead of their time. Wasn't a big fan of either album when they first came out, but I've listened to them a lot over the last 5 years. Each listen brings something new.
His basic voice talking would get me in to bed but him singing..
The Wilton-Jackson Band is not ...Queensryche...!!!
(DeGarmo left,Scott left,Geoff left)
Im not sure why it would be depressing. Nothing lasts forever. Led Zeppelin didn't last half as long and were already working less before Bonham passed. I think Chris changed his musical direction during Empire with Silent Lucidity and Bridge. He may have been the catalyst for which Geoff worked with. Great to see! One of my favorite albums of all time...
I definitely agree with you, Promised Land is incredible album.

really enjoyed this. thank you!
The lighthouse @ 0:26 is on San Juan Island across the strait from Victoria....I've been there before....
Promise Land was and is a materpiece. period.
In tis album, this guys created a very unique sound. A world on its own. I think this is the pinacle of the Tate-Degarmo era... after this they should have splitter to coma back a few years later and take it from there... Creative processus needs sometimes to take air and distance... I miss that time too...
I love what they did with the whole blood spitting and fire breathing thing in their live act...ahead of their time...
Since they started to work with Jimbo again ,remember this vid. Thanks for putting this up.This is one of my fav,vid of Queensryche.
It did sell over a million copies rather quickly. Although much was likely due to the anticipation to the follow-up of Empire.
I wish the band was still this tight.
Love me some Promised Land...don't get me wrong, Empire might be my favorite (ignoring OMC of course) but Promised Land gets trashed by a lot of people undeservedly.
I agree. other than OMC my 3 fav albums are in no particular order Warning, R4O and PL
To be honest, Promised Land "grew" on me.........not that I totally hated it to begin with. As the years went by, I just really connected with the theme of the entire album. "Promised Land" was not something many teens (including me) would grasp.
Well if they trash PL They #1 are not a true QR FAN and #2 they dont know great music when they hear it!
David Hill please go away with your "true fan" shit
Hillena , you're no one! GFY . Your comments and opinions don't mean shit to me. Good blog and bother someone else. You responded MONTHS after this post. Lol. This is my last response. I have better things to do with my time than discuss things with a simpleton

Great comment,I agree with every word.Saw this tour 4 times,Empire 3 times. Then it all ended.
AWESSOME CD.. One of my Favs
Tate gave he most epic performances on this tour.... No Tate No QR
So disappointed to see that chemistry end.
Thanks so much for putting this up. This album had a huge impact on me when it came out. It is so dark and gloomy and I love it for that.
DeGarmo is ripped (high as a kite) lmao
Thank you for your efforts, wonderful video!
I agree entirely....great sounds, mood, ambience, twisted, heavy, introspective...
Thanks for doing this! I really enjoyed revisiting this!
Chris is stoned out of his mind in this whole video. Lots of bud in there.
I really got into this album. Truly underated
Thanks so much for posting this... I never tire of seeing this!!
everytime i hear the song promised land it makes me wish that queensryche were still the band they used to be. it brings back a lot of memorys jsut hearing that song.
Cool, never saw this one before
Killer band
I remember I was pretty skeptical of this album...Damn it blew me away!!
Thanks for the upload. Must check out the title track video now. Wilton: "ooh a pick" LOL
How severely underrated is this album?!
it actually charted higher than Empire on the US billboard 200 and went platinum. Pretty good considering. It's a shame it was really their last true collaborative effort. HITNF was Chris clearing out his locker and flying tf outta there like a buddha.
I didn't realize Bill Hicks was a member of the band during this album...
Absolutely loved this disc. Still disappointed that it didn't do as well for them. I think it was incredibly underrated.
Sad.
Thanks for putting these together!
I would love to live in a place like that.
Awesome!! End of an era
I'm your 1,000th sub
hahaha, the pickup slides right out and... oo a pick! :P
Where have you been since 1994?!?! And I'm only 1 minute in!
Thanks for this awesome clip
Promised Land is way better then Empire. Just diddn't have the 10 hit to show for it. Seen them live in 1995 awesome show. they did seem to lose that mystery and intensity feel to there music after Chris left. Lucky to see them again in 2011 before Geoff left/fired however you want see it
it looks like in this making of that there's a music video for the title track promised land. where the hell do i find this? it looks cool
great video, promised land was the last good ryche album made.
This is AWESOME!! Thanks!
Awesome clip! They were very much in their A-game for this record. A shame that it all tapered off after this, but nonetheless..twas a great record and I miss that time.
Promised Land is truly an underrated gem. It's a shame that band has been so wasted in recent years.
queensryche is like gi goe..land, sea and air..gi joe theme song..insert! man they were such a team...
awesome....thank you for sharing
Geoff should see this in regards to working with your bandmates on an album---since then, he's used outside writerspost DGarmo, that new album FU is just a trainwreck with no definitive direction---I'm looking forward t the REeal QR's release in June

Were is Chris???
Magnific men. Promise land is the best album 💓 Bridge,Damage,One more time... and More..💋💋
Strong effort
Promised Land is really a piece of art that I personally find more fulfilling than the "Big 2", Mindcrime and Empire.
Empire is super mainstream commercial sounding...Empire is kind of like ordering take out rather than putting in the work on a really great recipe which was Promised Land...gratifying and good for the soul. Until they all had to do the dishes. They should have thrown in the towel once Chris said adios. Could have avoided all the b.s. afterwards.
great post!
Promised Land is such a great album. I think at the time it came out, the hideous grunge scene killed all the really great band's. I just recently replaced this CD and I love it. RYCHE N ROLL FOREVER!
Man with a wrong effort that they put with this record it became a great album
Stucktomyrootslike ?
Beginning of their burn out period
Is this from the Promised Land game? I still have it, after all these years.
After cutting the long hair off the band went down hill fast. But Chris did write premo music.
They did go way downhill after PL but Geoff was the only one who cut his hair... and to be honest his hair always looked ridiculous anyway.
I love the promise land album and I loved the live show. To me it is so sad to hear people taking about how nothing after mind crime lived up to its standards. poppycock, its every bit as good if not better. Chris? All of the so called Guitar Gods would do well to take lessons from him.
I love Geoff but success at your job gives you money to chase other Ideas and other pursuits the all require Mean Green you singing Genius !!!
