- For this episode, I sat down with Dibakar Banerjee to have Delhi's most iconic dish, Chole Kulche, and had a multi-layered conversation about his films, school days, the star system in Bollywood, and why he seems to be disowning his earlier works.
We also discussed the current state of affairs in India and society at large, his involvement in edits and his flaws. From disagreeing on some topics to agreeing on others, we're back with another exhilarating conversation.

As this comment is pinned, I want to bring light on dishonesty of Dibakar Banerjee and Samdish @41:00. The perperators of Khairlanjee massacres were NOT Brahmins but they were Kunbi OBCs

I am very happy that Dibakar talked about things which filmmaker nowadays don't talk at least on camera despite of having a back of audience of theirs.

I think Samdish is able to disarm anyone and have honest discussion, whether it is a star or politician or indie director. I totally defend Samdish in asking looks question to a politician - its an outstanding ability that Samdish has , more power to you !
Mate, so do I. It was a tactful angle to keep the audience engaged and attract more views. Hence the SRK comparison. The other strategy is sarcastic humour. Lure the audience in with It and then hit them with The Message you wish to give. Both techniques... quite effective. Managing People 101

Dibaker Banerjee was blessed with a director's eye for detail right from the first shot he ever took. He's one of those rare chaps who can almost never make a bad film.
All his films stand the test of time for me.
This is such a refreshing interview with Samdhish, the kind we are not used to watching anymore. Lots of food for thought and many controversial claims too.
He distances himself from what many including me believe to be his finest film, Khosla Ka Ghosla. He gives a perceptive analysis of Indian uncles, from KK Khosla to Raghubir Yadav in Sandeep Aur Pinky.
He talks about the "100 crore club" as a marketing ploy against the kind of films he makes and draws an interesting parallel with the demise of the 90s indie music industry.
We have forgotten conversation like this where the objective is not to agree with every statement of every person, but to generate a thoughtful discussion. Definitely worth a watch.
Very well articulated brother
I felt so many things through this interview. I feel this interview is a very solid depiction of "our times", as in the society we live in at this specific point in time. This interview can easily be a time capsule buried underneath the dirt, also called as almost every other thing on the Internet today. Years, decades may pass by and this one interview can be an accurate depiction of the times we were in. I think even the UBS team understood that, which is why they shot and edited this interview in such a unique way, almost like a documentary interview. Bhai bohot badhiya tha ye interview. Cheers bhai aapki team ko. Ek din mujhe bhi aapke saath kaam krna hai.
Very well said
Truly certified GOAT Dibankar is. Awesome as always Bhatia ji!
Dibakar's Byomkesh adaptation is one of my favorite movies of all time. Outstanding screen play , acting and technically competent, it is unfortunate that movie did not get enough support.
Ahead of its time
Omg ! This filmmaker has real good observations of the society around him.
You find it "good" probably cause you agree with him. I find them very ideological and supremely stupid.
@@arunsar7893please explain how it's stupid
@@arnabthreethreesixfivethre4841 34:40 The moron says "Send the Kashmiri pandits back" .. That is an utilitarian argument, especially when anyone who is even mildly informed knows why the Kashmiri Pandits can't go back and also doesn't answer the question he was asked. I am not sure how else to describe that other than stupidity due to ideological positions.
This is one of the many examples. The moron also hinges capitalism to Dictatorship. That's also an ideological position and supremely stupid cause historically dictators have never come from capitalist systems but always from the left, be is Indira's Emergency in India when she chose to insert the word Socialist into the constitution, Hitler in Nazi (Short Nationalist Socialist) Germany or Mao, Stalin, Pol Pott in Communist countries.
Deeply ideological Dibakar Banerjee will live in a DHA house and lament about how his driver has been separated from his family but will oppose every policy that would remedy that situation.
Hope the explanation helped.

This was the best interview on Unfiltered. I had no idea who Dibakar was but what a guy
The way samdish disarmed omar and got him to talk about godrej family and Mumbai days (10k birthday gift) and then sprung the question of cosy links between industrialists and politicians is better journalism than anyone does on prime time. It's a pity this country and its don't reward such genius. They are happy with the 'hard' questions asked by navika Kumar and padmaja Joshi, yuck.
when is this godrej and mumbai days discussed? can you please mention time?

I simply love Dibakar’s work. Thank you for bringing stories of our lives. I still remember Khosla ka Ghosla and it is still our family’s one of the favorite film.
Nice one. Dibakar is a great guy. Back in the day I was a new account executive and he was a senior copywriter. Always very helpful. 🎉
What an amazing discussion . How beautifully Dibakar explained celebrity culture and how great answer given by Samdhish . Made me skip my heartbeat ,when he mentions its not harm enjoying interviewing celebrities. 2 different thoughts but with such great & powerful ideology. ❤❤❤
I enjoyed this interview almost as much as the one with Anurag Kashyap. You're getting better at the craft and it's really captivating to watch these. This is my first time hearing of this director and he sounds like someone worth watching. Netflix should release his movie.
Samdish I felt that this interview moves very fast unlike your other interviews which start getting slowly interested and end will be exceptional..... Indeed it has got too many things to grab but still one of the brilliant interviews becoz Banerjee speaks his heart out everytime he start opening up... Exceptional
Such a joy to watch this interview. Dibakar hardly gives any interviews and it makes this one special. He is one of the rare Indian directors with such a unique vision.
It was a pleasure listening to a human intellectual. Happy to see DB talking because otherwise would not have know him.
The best ever episode on this channel so far. Keep going Samdish...!

What a shame bro... Thooo
What a great way to completely ignore the whole injustice happened with the family..
The 96 kuli marathas in maharashtra the upper caste which belong to general or open category are claiming that they have been kunabis since forever...
The main thing is the lower caste victim person is still out there with no justice and no hope for justice...
@@VVG884 bhai the whole point is not to have dragged Brahmins or the UC into this caste based crime narrative spun by the shity leftists like Dibakar... Please check that the caste of the oppressors in this case is Kunabi- which officially belongs to OBC category in Maharashtra.
The victim not yet getting justice is truly saddening... Our prayers are with them.
The best interview yet. My respect for Dibakar Banerjee went up a notch.
Very honest interview
Someone made even Samdish uncomfortable and defensive.. that’s dibakar for us..
The thing Samdish does is give a practicality to all conversations. What Dibakar does in his movies is acknowledge the unacknowledged. Both are necessary and Im a fan of both of them and it's a joy to watch them both go back and forth. One of thr brst interviews ever.
On the stardom question, Samdish, I thought questions like "good looks" are icebreakers which increase the possibility of opening doors for subsequent uncomfortable or probing questions. Excellent work.
My love respect for Dibakar Banarjee has grown leaps and bounds after watch this. What a man.
Dibakar sir is the only person who has made samdish total silent otherwise he is always jubilant but kudos to samdish for keeping the entire clip and taking the criticism head-on what a genuine interview
Agreed 💯
Even Samdish would have to agree
I saw it coming when Dibakar was coming onto samdish for star worshiping (although he doesn’t it’s just to keep the mood light and little distraction from a serious topic). And you managed to handle it soooo gracefully Sam! He as an audience should watch ur episodes of Bharat ek Khoj! How beautiful you take us to the other parts of our own country and.
The back and forth in this episode I think is the best I have seen in a celebrity interview. Interesting insights and shooting straight from the hip conversation. We need more of this then fabricated audience.
Dibakar is as passionate in life as is his work❤️❤️❤️❤️. Also great to see him bring out the best of Samdish.
I just love 4:3 aspect ratio. Amazing conversation Samdhish and team.
Not even a single interview where I feel that I should skip it or may be take a break! I just love it the way you interpret and carry the conversation with so much ease for the eyes of your audience! Bhai🙌🏻 and much love❤️
Dibakar speaks like how people used to speak about politics before 2019. Freely without any mob enforced censorship.
If you watch that part again, he doesn't talk about the politicians, he talks about their voters. That was always allowed.
Yeah. The times when narrative was in control of the Maclauy purrss and Lutyens. Islamo-leftistt hate we people took it away from them.
Omg dibakar got out honest and unfiltered samdish. Wow this is how interview should be done like conversation between friends, not like shouting matches we see on tv.

I am extremely grateful to Samdish for this interview. So good to hear Dibakar Bannerjee's views on capitalism, caste system and especially the farmers protest (which I was a part of). Maybe if we are lucky Dibakar will one day make a film on farmers protest or khairlanji...maybe woh subah aayegi
Dibakar banerjee is devious person, first he said I'm not bangali so that no one gets a preconceived notion that he can be libarandu naxaul. But later by his words , his ugliness came out, he proved that he is libarandu leftist bangali. He had zero sympathy for kashmiri pandit, being a brahmin himself. Jo apni caste ka na hua woh desh ka kaise hoga. I don't promote cast hatred. But it's truth.

Great interview. Dibakar is what we all wanted n we got. One if the best DIRECTORS in india
Samdish: I think it’s a comment on the audience, you seem to remember the wrong stuff 😅
Best 5 seconds of the interview!

No, to be honest, Dibakar was going for something deeper and I personally wanted to hear more from the guest with Samdish as the medium- no one does it like he does and we love that. Yet, if Samdish didn't approach it with the personal angle then it could have gone towards questions on what is to be done in a certain system when accepting it is being criticised.
(The woodland plug was hilarious! xD)
@@abdullahhafeez2210 While I'm a fan of Samdish, I found his interview with Abdullah to be average. He could have delved deeper into the hypocrisy of mullahs and Hindu extremism, subjects he seems hesitant to address. However, makes sense because he should also steer clear of the boycott group.
That sentence was an accurate representation of the entire interview where nothing of substance was discussed. Samdish is deluded if he thinks what he’s doing is journalism- he’s a RUclipsr now. Pure and simple.
How did I miss this? I've never seen Samdish being defensive and slightly angry at someone with a different opinion and my respect for Dibakar 🙌🏻
What an amazing interaction..truly freewheeling 🎉🎉Kudos !!

Samdish, this was one of your best interviews with a filmmaker. Dibakar was so candid and fearlesss. Absolutely loved him. What a guy!
And to answer your last question about unconditional love without marital bond, look at the relationship of Imroz and Amrita.
And also, fuck you @Netflix for not releasing Dibakar's film. I cannot even imagine what he must be going through. It is the saddest thing man. When I heard the cast, my eyes lit up with joy. It sucks to be in a system like this.
This man is devious to the core, first he said I'm not bengali to show that he is not libarandu, naxal, but later by his words it actually showed that he is libarandu naxal leftist.

I love Samdish and his shows. But I liked how Dibakar challenged him intellectually - the process of how progressives are somehow coopted by Bollywood and big money.
