Great review, thanks for taking the time to make it. I picked up their newest version with the mini's... played it for the first time last night. Very fun! I was expecting Memoir 44.. but then I quickly realized the subtle changes (appropriately) in fire and movement being held to one or the other each turn, really gave the feel of the older tactics of the time period. No cards like Memoir 44, but you are still challenged by the Action Points, that force you to make tough decisions each go at it. I enjoyed it solitaire, and look forward to introducing my son to it soon when he returns from summer vacation.
AGREED!!! I wanted to ask you about the rules you used for facing from Frederick's War as well. Are they pretty simple? I had an instance where my Colonials made a great charge on a unit next to a cannon, only to get mowed down before they could make a second go to get the artillery. I was thinking, surely these cannons should have a handicap given my units were slightly behind them and out of their arc of fire. However, I was honoring the base rules and so it goes they didn't survive.
Your reviews are wonderful *and* you're a lunatic. Aren't all solo boardgamers? ;) Thanks for another thorough and helpful review. The components look very nice and I like how much of the info is printed right on the board. Glad to hear that the new facing rules are backwards compatible. Cute kitty!
@Fushigi... Can't reply to your comment directly for some reason. LOL...We solo gamers ARE lunatics, aren't we? My co-host was Shadow: The War Puma. She frequently accompanies me into battle. Sometimes "assisting" by jumping onto the desk and obliterating both sides of the conflict :-P
SingleHandedWarfare I shall check that review with pleasure...got to order these two and whilst I'm waiting for them to arrive I'll have to dig out my copy of the Robert Graves novel...Sergeant Lambs America...just to get me in the mood :)
I have this game and forgotten how good it was, thanks to your review I've dug it out, dusted it off and given it a good crack. I am toying with the idea of spray painting some old RISK figures I have with the tri-corn hats and sticking them to the appropriate size bases to give the game a 'Battle Cry' look. Good idea on the facing rules, I'll look those up.
Had a look on eBay for prices for this (the PSC version) before I put mine up for sale. Then this video suddenly appears in my recommended.Spooky or just sharing my searches!

This is a great one to get youngsters into wargaming :)

Very nice presentation. There go fifty more bucks! Components look awesome! Thanks, man.
It'll be money well spent, my brother! Plenty of re-playability here:)
Thanks for the review! Like the solo playability too.
Thanks for the fine review. I got the game a few months ago and have a great time playing solo. I!m going to give the suggested optional rule a try.

Been looking at this along with the expansion for the French Indian war, sounds like a winner, thanks great review
Glad you found it helpful:) French & Indian expansion adds a lot to what's already there, too. I reviewed it as well if you want to check it out.

That sounds like a fun idea:) Three or four of those Risk figures should fit quite nicely in HtL's large hexes. Would love to see your end results
is this skill or luck based mostly?

Check out BordGameGeek for its expansion, Frederick's War (seven years war) and many more fanmade scenarios like for the Spanish War of Succession
