This is such a good idea about teaching what is ' Hofflich ' and 'Unhofflich' in Germany. This was just in a coffee shop but I think there is a great room for making such videos on every situation, for example in office, in home, in business.

@Mario Yeah, usually this works out fine. But sometimes, when they don’t respond quick enough it can help to slam your fist on the table and shout “Und das ist ein befehl!!” Works all the time! 😅

Für mich ist "Machste mir ´nen Kaffee?" bzw "Machen Se mir ´nen Kaffee?" immer positiv! Das sind die Kunden, die auf einer freundschaftlichen Basis mit mir umgehen möchten und eher zu Stammkunden werden, als alle anderen. Es ist für mich auch einfacher darauf einzugehen und Smalltalk zu beginnen. Für Menschen, die noch nicht so sicher deutsch sprechen, empfehle ich es allerdings nicht, denn ich würde im Dialekt drauf antworten ;)

Me too! "Ich möchte" has always been explained to me as "I would like", which sounds polite to me.
@@0martina00 It can translate as such: Ich möchte nach Berlin fahren = I would like to go to Berlin. So it's usually combined with another infinitive. However when it's solely combined with an object, it can sound slightly impolite. "Ich möchte gerne einen Kaffee." sounds a bit direct to me, but if you ask this, people probably won't react angry or anything. "Ich möchte gerne einen Kaffee bestellen." would sound better :)

I believe no matter how you ask it’s all about the body language that comes with delivering those words. One can be very polite while also being direct. Kind eyes, humble posture, pleasant smile etc

zB wenn ich das Gespräch anfange, würde ich "Guten Morgen, ich hätte gerne einen Kaffe" sagen. Aber es kann sein, dass es so geht:
"Guten Morgen!"
"Guten Morgen!"
"Was hätten Sie gerne?"
"Einen Kaffee, bitte."
In diesem Fall hat der/die Kellner*in schon den halben Satz für mich ausgesprochen, also ich kann den Satz einfach fortsetzen, so zu sagen.

Just Googled Eiskaffee after Duolingo presented the word in a lesson - the translation made it sound more luxurious than just iced coffee - and found this video. I have subscribed in the hope of avoiding rudeness the next time I’m in Germany! I would hate to put so much effort into learning the language to then sound rude - that would be my worst nightmare! 😂

Dies war wirklich überraschend für mich! Es hat mich überrascht, obwohl ich mehrere Jahre auf dem Universität Deutsch gelernt habe! Ich hatte gedacht, dass "ich möchte" auf Englisch "I would like" bedeutet, und dass die Verwendung des Konjunktivs so den Kommentar nicht so direkt und daher höflicher macht. Gegen 1:40 Minuten im Video, als "ich möchte" als Äquivalent zu "I want" auf Englisch übersetzt wurde, hätte ich gedacht, dass "I want" auf Deutsch "Ich will" sein würde, was für mich sicherlich unhöflich klingt. Vielleicht, obwohl "ich möchte" Konjunktiv ist, ist es nicht ganz indirekt genug und es muss noch indirekter sein, indem man "ich hätte" sagt? Gibt es andere soziale Situationen wie diese, in denen ein englischer Muttersprachler denken würde, dass "ich möchte" höflich ist, aber in Wirklichkeit nicht für ein deutsches Ohr ist?

I work as a barista in the US. In my area, the Pacific Northwest, most people say “I’d like a (size) 12oz (drink) americano ( to go or for here ) to go please”
A more formal /polite way would be “May I have 12oz americano to go please?” And if you’re a regular or more casual way would be “ I’ll have/ I’ll get a 12oz americano to go.” It might sound rude to me to say “One americano” or just “americano.” Even “ Americano please.” From my experience of working in the coffee industry, the best way to order is to always say the size, temperature request if not regular, the drink, any special requests, and if it is to go or for here and always say please or thank you. So if I wanted an iced 16oz vanilla latte with oat milk I would usually say something like“ Hey, I’d like a 16oz iced vanilla latte with oat milk to go. Thanks!” Anyways I wonder if any of this is the same in Germany?

Also, I didn't expect Berlin folks to be more polite than us people from the Ruhrgebiet XP Here, it's fairly common to say, "Einen Kaffe, bitte", or "Ich nehme...", and it's not considered rude. But the good old, "Ich hätte gern...", is definitely the safe way to go.
Also, I wouldn't say, "Ich möchte...", is rude per se. It's subjunctive and automatically a nicer version of, "Ich will...", but it sounds awkward in this context.
The problem is that they are implying or saying indirectly that it is a matter of the language. It's actually not about language, but of manners and/or regional differencies. If you say only "Ich möchte einen Kaffee." and nothing else, it can sound impolite, but it's not about the actual phrasing rather than the behaviour of being laconic.
I wish I can meet you at least for a short time so I can learn Deutsch from you guys am struggling to know Germany language but I'm trying now Vielen Dank für deine videos

Also, vor drei Jahren ich habe diese Video angeschaut und dachte ich dass, "ich hätte gerne" einfach zu schwer war. Ich habe meisten "ich will kaffee" benutzt. Nach 3 Jahren habe ich Deutsch wesentlich verbessert und ich kann fast alles verstehen und auch komplexe Artikeln ohne anstrengungen verstehen. Ich hoffe dass ich in 1-2 Jahren C2 niveau erreiche.

I have one question tho about the phrase “Ich möchte”. When my teacher introduced me to this, I got a feeling like it it was similar to “I would like to have” in English, and my teacher approved it. I was sure it was nice way to say whatever you wanted in Deutsche Sprache. Aber, in video it looks like Cari says it otherwise. Can you explain more about it, I really want to know when you guys use it, in what kind of sentences.
It's actually not that important, what you say, but how you say it and how your behaviour is. Even a sentence structure that is usually used to be polite, can be uttered impolitely. The video is misleading, because it focusses too much on sentence structure, while politeness is not really a matter of language rather than of behaviour and intonation.

@Easy German Viele Aussagen im Video habt ihr als unhöflich bezeichnet. Das stimmt so nicht. Alle Aussagen im Video waren an sich nicht unhöflich. Macht euch bitte bewusst, dass Höflichkeit nicht durch Grammatik erzeugt wird. Es gibt keinen Konjunktiv 3!, der grammatisch Höflichkeit erzeugt. Höflichkeit hat weniger mit Sprache, denn mit Betonung, Körpersprache und das aktuelle Verhalten zu tun. Man kann mit "Ich möchte einen Kaffee." einen Kaffee bestellen und wirkt unhöflich, wenn man dann wortkarg bleibt/wird. Man kann mit dem gleichen Satz und einem Lächeln ganz anders wirken.
Ihr habt einige Lerner ziemlich verwirrt, wenn man so durch die Kommentare scrollt. Viele denken jetzt, dass man nur bestimmte Satzkonstruktionen benutzen darf, um nicht Gefahr zu laufen, dass man unhöflich klingt. Ich denke, hier wäre ein Folgevideo gut, um klarzustellen, dass Höflichkeit nicht durch bestimmte Satzkonstruktionen erzeugt wird. Diese unterstützen nur mit der Wortwahl das Höflichseinwollen.
Also, ganz genau so hab ich gerade auch gedacht...Ich habe schonmal als Kellner gearbeitet und fand eigentlich garnicht so schlimm als die leute so wie im Video geredet haben. So lange die nicht „ey, bring mir mal einen kaffe“ gesagt haben war ich vollkommen zufrieden mit meinen Kunden...P.S. ich kann den Satz „Ich hätte gern einen kaffe“ richtig böse und unhöflich sagen xD also...

Ich denke, es gibt eine Balance, eine Möglichkeit, das Richtige zu tun oder zu sagen. Sprache, Umstände, Kontext und andere Dinge wie Intonation, Stimmung, Körpersprache, Vertrautheit mit der anderen Person. Viele dieser Dinge sind in verschiedene Arten von Beziehungen mit anderen und Situationen, mit Fremden oder Freunden verwickelt. Das Wichtigste ist, freundlich und sanft zu sein und alles mit Liebe zu tun.
Na ja, das hier ist ein Video für Anfänger im Deutschlernen und es geht darum, eine simple Interaktion darzustellen, simple Alltagssätze vorzustellen. Klar ist das etwas vereinfacht, aber es ist nur ein kurzes Video über Sprache, keine Cultural-Studies-Vorlesung.
@@kathaa-b6972 Nee, Easy German ist nicht für Anfänger und das war es nie. Das Format war schon immer so, dass Lerner ein gewisses Sprachlevel erreicht haben müssen, um es zu nutzen. Das Format von Easy German/Easy Languages besteht daraus, dass alle Konversation in der normalen gesprochenen Sprache geführt wird. Es findet kein Vereinfachen der Sprache für Anfänger statt. Es wird so gesprochen, wie Muttersprachler sprechen. Und die vielen Kommentare, die sich über an sich nicht unhöfliche Satzkonstruktionen wundern, die hier als unhöflich bezeichnet werden, sagen mir, dass das Ziel des Videos hier verfehlt wurde. Cari und Co. haben einfach den Fehler gemacht, dass sie nicht darüber nachgedacht haben, was Höflichkeit eigentlich ist. Dazu braucht man auch keine universitäre Vorlesung abhalten.

naja, kommt aber auch oft auf den Tonfall an der einen Satz höflich oder unhöflich macht. Wenn man die Nuancen des Tonfalls nicht so gut kennt, kann (sollte) man besser die langen höflicheren Sätze benutzen ;-) es heißt ja auch " Der Ton macht die Musik" Ist vielleicht auch etwas was man mal gut erklären kann ;-)

That’s why I never had the confidence to speak once on the ground, not knowing for sure if that’s actually what people say in real life. I suppose allowing myself to look like a fool is part of the deal of learning a foreign language. 😅

I’ve heard some passive remarks about English speakers when ordering a coffee and, so I thought I’d explain.
In English, particularly the Australian English dialect, not American English unfortunately because they have created their own English vernacular and even their own dictionary and refute formality and control (their history).
We use the modal verbs “Would, Could, Should, Must, and May” quite a lot, and when placed before or after a verb, usually while directing a conversation to someone one does not know at all, or to someone who is more superior than oneself, or by someone who wants to express distance e.g. by a judge to express distance when speaking to the accused. The sentence/speech structure is changed in this way and then forms Formal English. This is why English speakers use this tone when ordering food in a foreign country and the Germans just laugh at us… because they need a differentiated “you” to understand why coffee is asked in such a way. If one listens to the real play of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet on RUclips, then they can understand that no German can comprehend it. It was how people actually spoke several hundred years ago in England, but without the emphasised poetic ring to it for artistic effects.
In Australia, to order a coffee with respectfully and politely, one says “could I please have a flat white OR I would like a flat white please”. Hence why English speakers translate this exactly as ˋIch möchte eine cafe bitte”
Here, one doesn’t use this sentence structure with people that they know well, unless talking about something they have done in the past e.g “I could have, but I didn’t” which is not formal. It depends on how the word is used. The use of the historic informal English “you” - Thou, is no longer used, as well as it’s conjunctions, where -st OR -est OR -th were added on to the end of the verb e.g. thou singest, thou taketh, thou jumpest etc. Historically, ‘You’ in its current form was used with everyone one that one did not know but now is used with everyone. In the Australian English dialect, modal verbs are still used to form distinctively Formal sentence structure and is definitely seen, heard, read and spoken in courts, in written correspondence /mail (not subscriptions, clubs etc), at private schools, and so on, but are always omitted when using the informal tone. The formal tone when heard sounds very suggestive. When speaking with the formal tone, it sounds as though one is not telling another person to do or not do something but is rather suggesting it, hence why it is distinctively the the polite form and recognised when heard. It is the leftover from the formal You prior to loosing “Thou”.
“I would like a” (formal tone)
“Give/get me a” (informal tone)
“Could you” OR “May you / May I” -Doctor could you please tell me if my blood test results were ok? (Formal tone)
“Can you” - Can you check my mailbox for me Sally on your way through? (informal tone)
“Should you require” (formal tone) there is no informal word for should, but is replaced with “if” in the informal contexts.
“If you need” -If you need a jumper to borrow let me know Jimmy, it’s cold outside (informal tone)

I wonder if there might not be similar differences between Berlin and more southern parts of the German-speaking world?
In America, it seems to be quite acceptable to say "I want a coffee" or "I'll have a latte", even without using the word, please; and it is quite common. In most other English-speaking countries, it would be considered quite rude.

Thanks for another eye opening tip! I am pretty sure that we were taught in HS German class to order by saying, "Ich möchte eine Tasse Kaffee, bitte."
Now I feel like I have been unintentionally rude numerous times on my trips to Germany. Will have to adjust my dialogue in the future!
„Ich möchte eine Tasse Kaffee bitte“ is totally fine.
It makes no difference (in my opinion) if you say „bitte“ after „möchte“ or at the end of the sentence.
