  • Official HD video of Thomas Dolby performing I Scare Myself from the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Flat Earth.
    Listen here: thomasdolby.lnk.to/theflatear...
    Lyrics:
I scare myself just thinking about you
I scare myself when I'm without you
I scare myself, the moment that you're gone
I scare myself when I let my thoughts run
    And when they're running
    I keep thinking of you
    And when they're running
    What can I do?
I scare myself and I don't mean lightly
I scare myself, it can get frightening
I scare myself to think what I could do
I scare myself, it's some kind of voodoo
    And with that voodoo
    I keep thinking of you
    And with that voodoo
    What can I do?
    And with that voodoo
    I keep thinking of you
    And with that voodoo
    What can I do?
But it's so, so very different when we're together
And I'm so, so, so much calmer, I feel better
'Cause the stars already crossed our paths forever
And the sooner that we realize it, the better
And then I'll be with you and I won't scare myself
And I'll know what to do and I won't scare myself
And my thoughts will run and I won't scare myself
And I'll think of you and I won't scare myself

    • @pmosullivan1
      @pmosullivan1 7 месяцев назад +4

Its a thoughtful song, i have known it for many years and Doblys version walked into my mind many a morning walk when i was scared for the future with an alcoholic wife.
Now she has passed, some mornings, it still tunes thru some mornings for my mind to exhibit all my loss.
If this is your first shared love song, be careful.
To me it was filled with 30 plus years of love for my partner and soul mate. But this song was in my head, she had heard it 30 years ago, its place in my head was from a lifetime shared and my fears.
Its not a song for first love.
That would potentially make it a controlling song and it was not ever meant to be that.
As a female, you are indeed a goddess, but you as a Woman and the Woman you will become only need to know this song from a full partner years into a life and relationship and see it a sign of your partners absolute understanding and devotion to you. Years in, his fears of losing you.
It is not a first love song to share.
As a first love song, it could be coversive.
It could be controlling as a first song shared.
There are a billion songs to express love, so many will speak it better.
      Love is equal.
Absolutely equal from best to worst, all happiness, all loss, it is shared as equal partners.
And it is, i promise so beautiful and fills your heart beyond belief.
But this song is not a first love song. Be careful. Be yourself always, never live your life directed by this song.
You may sing this song to yourself as i did when you have that person.
But this song is always about our fears for our other.
      Its not for you.
      Its about their fears.
      It's not a love song.
I suspect in your case, its about control.
Forgive me saying this, i am but a stranger, but tomorrow, as i do my morning walk to work, this tune will again fill my head. As a widower, its a hard knock because i failed and didnt die first, but for the many days i walked the same path and came home to a lit house and warm fire, i sung it to myself a lot of mornings.
You may sing it about him to yourself or he about you to himself.
It is not a song to share to control a partner.
You must always be in control of yourself, you have so much potential to explore.
Us guys tend to worship easily if we are not players.
But your life is in your hands, your dreams are reachable.
Never be limited in your dreams by this song.
Forgive the waffling. I am just scared for you.
This is a silent song for lovers within themselves about their other.
It is never stated, even if apt.
There are so many other songs that cover absolutely everything.
But this as a first love song or 15th love song is not right.

I have a copy of this track on an old Japanese import compact disc remaster. Sonically it is one of the best recordings I have ever listened to. This track has been my audiophile benchmark recording for 30 years. I consider the copy I have as sublime and transcendent. It is rare for great composition to marry the technical aspects of the highest levels in the recording industry yet Dolby, Shipley, Lacksman & Traugott collectively created a standout masterpiece in this recording. If you have some spare change in your pocket, skip RUclips and actually go buy an official copy of this recording. I recommend you get a full copy of the 'Flat Earth' album and submerge yourself in its splendor. A big shout out to Dan Hicks, the author of this splendid song.

First, I love Dan Hicks and his version of his own song is classic. Dolby took a good song and lifted it into a great song. He layered the piano, guitar and trumpet along with his voice into a mini symphony of sound. You can't hear it here, but the album version is even more complex. This song gave me shivers the first time I heard it. Brilliant.

I totally agree! Back in the day, albums were created to play all the way thru. You just had to flip it over. I miss music that follows that concept. And music that is that good.

haha, yes that also happened when I made my own collection on tape (or later on cd)...sometimes, i'd get that sequence so perfect, two or three (or even four) songs became married in me.

I might scare myself only I can't play trombone. Or loop it. You invented a new yet old. I talked about you years ago. Stan Ridgway as well. ❤
