How can I know that it's cold to refill the water?

Would it be easier to use distilled water so there is no build up?

Some people do. But I never do and only have to clean it once every 5 years. Really.

Same here, I've never empty my Jiffey out, and have never had to clean it. Now if you have extremely hard well water that might be different. I live in Milwaukee, where we get all from Lake Michigan which is considered hard but not extremely hard, and like I say, I've never had to clean and I've been using my for over 10 years.

They sell a liquid you pour in the spout- and then dump it out. Pretty easy.
