I’m 5 months late but literally I’ve never seen a subpar Kroos. In the 2022/23 season Ancelotti tried to age him out and it just fell so flat. Ancelotti saw the error of his ways. Toni Kroos in his final of professional football was immaculate. Forget the titles but actually having watched the games- not Madrid but as I could holistically for, I believe the best player in the world across the season was Toni Kroos. His performance levels were consistent. This man has been pulling the strings since day one. Everyone speaks of Modric but for me Kroos has always been the one. An absolute honour to have seen Kroos. He even said when he was 25 signing what he said would be last ever deal to take him to 30. He just had always aimed for 30 to call it quits no matter what. Only reason he pushed the 2 more years was because Perez and Ancelotti begged him and just loved Madrid so much he pushed. I mean even Madrid now, no disrespect but the absence of Kroos is damning. People speak of Rodri like a kingpin. I remember the first leg City vs Madrid Kroos played in the double pivot and the deepest and literally everyone thought City would pack Kroos. Literally Kroos produced A MOTM those numbers were insane. And he proved as did you can have system but you can’t beat Kroos even as Pep

I never watched Maradona and half the time I forget he was a midfielder, he's better than everyone I mentioned. Same goes for Cruyff. I've watched Iniesta and Xavi and to me Modric just clearly surpassed them. Kroos is debatable but his decorated accomplishments puts him above them for me. They were together for far longer than Modric/Kroos duo and couldn't achieve the same heights. Someone can easily argue Xavi Iniesta > Modric Kroos too tho it's all subjective

He is kind of person who could just make a chill phone call with his family during the game in the final and had a big laugh while others were trying to stay calm and focus (based on his true story). Germany on the other hand didn't do too well in the last couple of tournaments. So you could well argue it being harsh to compare the Ballon D'Or when playing for Germany the last couple of years. And in 2014, that trophy was "taken" from Kroos by his very teammate Neuer ;) Anyways, Modric is a legend himself for sure. All the best to him.
Difficult to say who's best. And it is also difficult to compare players from different eras so I look at midfielders who played in the last 25 years. All that come to mind have or had their own unique playstyle. I would certainly put him into the same bracket as Xavi, Iniesta, Modric and Pirlo. There are only two better midfielders in my opinion and that's because they were so amazing to watch: Zidane and Seedorf.
