  • In what is the first instalment of a number of videos from the CRMC Donington Classic Festival 2015, here are Freddie Spencer's Hondas being warmed up prior to his appearance in the special legends parade.
Freddie rode both these machines during the weekend, one a 250cc machine, and the other the 500cc Honda Triple which Freddie famously won the 1983 500cc World Championship against an inspired Kenny Roberts on the VR Yamaha. This was Honda's first 500cc (now renamed MotoGP) world championship title, and Freddie backed it up by winning both the 250 and 500 world championships in 1985, the first and only man who will ever achieve this!
Freddie won 27 GP's in a short career blighted by bizarre incidents and injuries, and some might say he did not achieve what many had expected given his complete and utter dominance of the sport whilst he was at his peak, but 3 world championships is nothing to be sneezed at, and in most enthusiasts view he is the most naturally gifted rider in the history of the sport, and the first man to visibly drift a GP motorcycle through the turns to help steer the bike, which is now commonplace.

I don't think Spencer ever raced the V3 in Rothman's colours.

No he didn't. He tested the machine at I think "Surfers Paradise" as part of the Rothmans launch but the V4 was up to speed by the 85 season and the NS 500 3 cylinder machines were given to Gardner, Haslam and Mamola in '85

Was the rothmans v3 an improvement/upgrade to the 83 v3?

This one is a late RS500 with the massive beam frame which was around 86 time, way after Freddie stopped riding it so would be the ultimate version and way better than the 83 bike
