  • Opening weekend at deer camp. A bitter sweet opener as we remember our good friend Frank. Weather was cold, windy, snowing/raining but we toughed it out. Meat was put on the pole and a few deer were seen as the rut activity increases. #wilderness #deerhunting #fishing #voyageurs #bassfishing #boating #cabinlife #nature #hunting #deerhunting #deercamp #deerseason #bucks #remote #offgrid #cabin #minnesotadeerseason

    I've been part of a family owned deer camp in northern NH for 60 years now. We're into our 4th generation of hunters and it's awesome to get together every fall. The heritage and tradition runs deep in our camp and I'm glad to see it still going strong. There's nothing like hunting from a camp with great people telling the same stories every fall and making new memories along the way! Good for you and your gang! Keep it going!

    Good to see hunting camps still going strong.. As someone who started deer hunting in the 1970s as a youth, I recall the standard of red wool pants and a red or checkered red wool jacket--very classy and practical. I have an idea of where you are at as our old traditional hunting site was south of Pelican Lake (Orr); many of the hunters are old and many have deceased, those who still hunt scattered about. Have relatives in Crane Lake.. Memories from the deer camp will always be with us forever, a toast to the past and present and future deer hunters who will hunt and have the camaraderie so dear to us all.

Glad you liked the videos. Hoping to see more deer in the coming seasons. We’ve had some luck over the 10 years but after the winters of 2013-2014 in my region the deer numbers haven’t rebounded. I just purchased a 10 acre camp in the U.P. from a group of older gentlemen who had it for over 20 years but lost two members and were unfortunately getting too old to enjoy it themselves. They bought it from a similar group that first built it in 1979. Some of the stories they shared with me were just awesome. I’m not a hunter, but many of my friends are, and I bought it to make memories with them and my family. When I was shopping, I found a beautiful remote camp only accessible by river and ultimately decided that it was just too remote for us and how we wanted to enjoy it. One thing I think preventing a lot of people from buying camps is the riding cost of real estate. The dream was almost out of reach for me as I’m sure it’s becoming for others…Covid really put a hurt on prices for off grid getaways.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  14 дней назад

      Yeah prices are pretty high! I am very fortunate to have a cabin property like this. We may not see a lot of deer but we also have access to thousand of acres of wilderness hunting where we are unlikely to come across another hunter. I hope you and your family and friends make great memories at your new place!

      Thanks! Too many of these types of camps are fading out. Use to have 4 hunting groups on the lake. We are the last one. Mainly because of no deer but also because the older generation is the last to do deer camps. Need some youth to pick it up!

      @DZ-ib1gz 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@arrowheadangler agree we are inundated with wolves and hard winter have hurt the population near us as well. Many youth are not showing interest as they don’t see deer for several years they lose interest. Happy hunting.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  7 месяцев назад

      Agreed. Without the youth getting involved there is no future in hunting. Waterfowl hunting will be the first to fall apart. I am hopeful that the deer will come back to at least respectable numbers. Realizing that the mid 2000’s was an outlier with deer numbers I think we can certainly handle a few more. • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  7 месяцев назад

      Appreciate the kind words about Frank. I did not see a wolf this season. I believe the 2 packs that frequent the area are pretty small. Back in the early to mid 2000’s it wasn’t uncommon to see 7-8 wolves in a pack but now it seems that they are 3-4 strong and that’s about it. My assumption is that it is due to food availability in the spring. With hard winters there are not many fawns and if you keep the deer numbers low the wolf numbers will likely follow. Also, there are a ton of bear in the area. Haven’t had any on the trail cameras the past two seasons but I see tracks pretty frequently. Hoping for a few mild winters. That would really help the deer population. Does Anderson’s stay open all fall or do they close shop in October? I don’t venture that way too much after summer and tend to go through Orr and Cusson.

    This was a treat. As close to being there as it gets. One of the best hunting videos I've seen.
    I wonder if you guys are suffering the same malady there as we are in northeast Wisconsin. We had great deer habitat after the white pine was cut in the late 1800s and early 1900s and then the landscape was subjected to forest fires. Now it's largely mature forests and the deer and grouse populations have plummeted. Plus we have a few wolves around. I keep hoping the low deer numbers aren't a result of CWD.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  5 месяцев назад

      Agree with the habitat component. I am not sure that we understand the impacts on deer wintering yards and loss of adjacent habitat as well as fire suppression. Obviously, the presence of whitetail deer on the landscape is a fraction of time over the last 100 years considering the re-habitation post glacier approximately 10-12,000 years ago. So the habitat isn’t exactly conducive to whitetail deer without the human disturbance and logging practices. Mild winters will help increase whitetail deer populations. We could have some predator control with wolves but I realize that this wouldn’t impact survival as much as others may believe purely due to winter severity. Most research I have seen from Mech and others shows that wolves impact deer in severe winters but have little impact during moderate to low severity. This would also correlate to increased fawn survival since wolves wouldn’t have the capacity or energy to be able to seek out the individuals and more fawn survival would increase deer density. Also, black bear are pretty hard on fawn survival as well. Either way, we currently do not have known CWD in our far northern deer population. Appreciate the comments as I love looking into research and am a prescribed fire practitioner myself! I really enjoy looking into habitat pre European settlement and looking into the natives burning component and how it shaped the landscape. Sad that we suppressed the fire dependent ecosystem.

      I hope you can get a property and start a camp. Best time ever. I’ve got two girls of my own and one son that I am hoping will join me for deer season in a few years. Sometimes wish I had some land closer to my house to take them out on.

    First video I found of yours. Crazy place you have to get too. How did they even build that in a place so hard to get too?
    I hang by the neck so the blood can drain out and not pool in the neck. Not sure why people hang by their feet.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  7 месяцев назад +1

      My great grandfather and his 4 boys put a lot of work into that place. Purchased in the 40’s they hauled all of it across the river when it was frozen. Rough cut lumber and local timber was used to build the big cabin. The other cabin we utilize was built in the 60’s but I now purchased a mill and have been milling my own wood to rebuild it with a loft.

    How do u guys get electricity?

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  7 месяцев назад

      We have a generator for electricity that runs on gas. Honda 2000 but she’s in need of an upgrade. We run them pretty hard so I think it’ll be time for a new 2200 Honda. Runs everything we need. Eventually it would be nice to do an off grid solar setup. Waiting a little longer for the technology but I think I’m pretty close to just investing in it.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  7 месяцев назад

      We use a generator and bring gas up to run it while we are up there. We had to buy a bigger one to run the pump/ water heater, but it works well for us. We do also have propane lights from way back when- but rarely do we use those, occasionally for a backup.

    how can you fall asleep while on stand when you go in after sun up

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  6 месяцев назад

      The old timers certainly doze off. No need to rush to the stand and beat the sun by 2 hours. Very different hunting in this country. Typically try to get to the stand 15-20 minutes before shooting light but when you drop a couple people off and walk close to a mile back you don’t always make it.

    • @arrowheadangler
      @arrowheadangler  6 месяцев назад +1

      For us it is not about the venison. It’s about the tradition, history and adventure. Unfortunately we cannot shoot does in our area as I would like to take a doe as well but I can hunt other parts of the state if I want to see more deer and have a chance at a doe. Thanks for watching. I sometimes wish I had property where I could just go out my back door and shoot a deer but I certainly enjoy my camps tradition no matter how difficult it is.

    • @arrowheadangler

      Oh plenty of trips. Check out the 2020 deer season. Had to come out by wheeler. It’s a hike to get out and not the easiest of wheeler trails especially if it’s a wet fall. Beaver dams, swamps, and rugged terrain make it difficult to traverse but we manage. Think g of purchasing an Argo and coming in from the snowmobile trail. Would be about 10 miles shorter and less to worry about. Just have one big swamp to cross. This ol cabin has lots of tales about trips and big deer that both got away and were shot!
