You might like something from my perspective. I was a service technician for bosch. Much less Greece was put in an angle grinder head than you would think, they will look dry because it flings off no matter what grease. A danger of putting too much grease means it can't get out of the way and overloads the machine. The grease bosch used was nothing special, pretty much regular automotive lithium grease, not moly or graphite or white or high temp...just the very light beige. Once they settled down they will both sound the same
I changed the grease on my new SPTA polisher last year after watching a previous video you had produced, as well I used the Lucas grease , the sound level and smoothness of the machine definitely improved immensely, definitely worth doing for longevity of the machine and performance, keep up the great content!
I wish you had opened it back up after some use. That Lucas lithium grease is probably not the best choice. I suspect the centrifugal spinning of the gears slings all the grease back off the teeth, so you need a product designed for the purpose, like a coupling grease. I like Rheolube 380, but there are other choices, including Lucas 'red n tacky' if you were desperate. There really is no point or advantage to packing the entire housing with grease either. Just coat the gears, run for 30 minutes and see what happened. Easier (and cheaper) to test with Lucase X-Tra heavy but I use Krytox XP grease at work (super $$ though).
Excellent video but I was thinking the same thing the red tacky grease we normally use on rotary hammers drills is a much better option other than a high quality bearing grease…
I just got the 15mm polisher a couple of weeks ago, haven't had a chance to use it yet. Thinking about doing this grease swap, but which one would be best to use? Something easy to get over the counter at my local auto parts store would be a plus.
I don't know exactly if this is the grease type thatyou used is the correct one but for sure you need a high temp(600 C) and high speed gear grease, usually graphite (black grease) or molybdenum disulphide ! Remember to open and close after you spin it with hands to see if the gears are covered, typically takes 3 opens without the screws !
I think centrifugal force would throw the grease off the gears, so it's a tough one to find something that would stay on. It's basically a gearbox so an oil bath system would be ideal but completely impractical for a polisher.
I purchased the 21mm($600 2 batteries and charger)as I did not have the extra $200 for the Rupes. I plan to get a 15mm, it is a little heavy, however it can be one handed if necessary as it is balanced pretty well. Vibration is not bad. I want them to produce a micro polisher for the interior and tighter areas. I am a Dewalt guy BTW.
It appears the free spin time from when you released the triggers increased significantly which indicates less friction and ease of rotation. That means less stress on the motor and longer life. You didn't mention the prices.
A decibel meter downloaded onto a phone may have given a usable reference for the sound levels, before and after. I would be tempted to do the grease swap from new after seeing this video.
Seriously my friend, you need to try the Bosch GET75-6N 6” Corded Variable Speed Barrel-Grip Orbit Sander w/ Turbo Mode. It puts a ton more movement between the pad and the paint, spins the same direction as a *gasp* rotary and has just enough orbit to kill swirls dead. It is noisy though. Earplugs not optional. Also, have you tried madgrip gloves to kill vibration?
I have both of these as well and I was thinking about swapping the 21mm onto the 15 so I can have a 21 with a 5” backing plate and 5100 rpm instead of 4400
Let me know if you ever do that swap. Wouldnt it be better to swap the control unit though? I have both 21 and 15. 21 works great with the 5" bp, but it would be totally killer if it would go 5100opm like the 15. Shinemate 21 goes to same opm as their 15.
If I were going to all that trouble, I'd install a grease zerk in the body (positioned so it shoots grease right onto the gears.) Start with a light coat of grease only on the gears. Then, a couple squirts through the zerk after every few uses.
good day friend. I have a question about a 15mm. I bought one and I realized that by putting my finger on the pad, I can stop it from rotating on its own axis but not the orbital movement, I remove my finger and it rotates again on its same axis. Is it normal or do you think it broke down? I have only used the item once
Just got a 2684-20 (15mm). It’s got that terrible crunching/clunking gear sound as it slows to a stop too. 👎. Bummer. Gonna return and try another one.
After you put the grease and tested it without the backing plate, it vibrates pretty crazy and then after putting the backing plate it goes away for the most part right ?
Hey Scott, how are you doing mate? I`m just about to buy the dewalt or the milwaukee, could you tell me the differenecs between them? Which one is louder, more vibration, etc. Thank you

Is the head gearbox area sealed? Or relying on the grease not being liquid to not leak? If sealed you can use a semi liquid lower viscosity grease in there and it'll always be in between those teeth. The thixker stuff will be pushed out of the way almost immediately if there is any expansion room available.
As with all high end polishers the recommended lubrication is superlube only, never use a tacky type of grease like the red or anything else and certainly not lithium grease
@@fredio54 super lube multi synthetic grease. Usable range of minus 45° to 450° and is the only lubrication that Rupes recommends in their polishes. The stuff is amazing and have been using it for years on all polishers and I've extended the life by years by using it as recommended by RUPES
@@willsrestorations Again, that's available in NLGI 2, 1, 0, 00, and 000 - each of these is a different viscosity and applicability. I only use real synthetics myself - have done for 20 years, Amsoil back in the old days, Penrite these days, but the base oil chemistry and the viscosity rating are somewhat independent properties of any oil/grease. Looking at Rupes manuals I could not find any mention of grease, lubricant, lube, NLGI etc - nothing. Where is your source for that info? I was suggesting using a 0 or 00 rather than a standard 2 or 1. What are you suggesting? Too vague so far.
Scott I got tired of waiting for somebody to do a video on a grease swap so I did it myself a few weeks ago in preparation to use it soon lol. I've seen plenty of grease swaps use Red 'n' Tacky. My mechanic was nice enough to give me a few ounces of the green version that's supposed to be better. Would you say what I used is a good option as well?

I did the grease swap as I do it most of my cordless polishers or polishers. The only thing I don't like about Milwaukee is when it comes to a stop you hear that cringe grind and that's just poor machining

Thx for the info, it’s been like 2 months since the last video.
That is good to hear

@GlumdogTrillionaire err don't think so. Mr expert.

I never even thought about swapped the two orbital heads on the machines. That would produce some interesting results im sure!
We don’t yet have the 15 in Aus, so I just swapped out the backing plate. Vibration isn’t really much different depending on pad. Works just fine.
Let me know if you ever do that swap. Wouldnt it be better to swap the control unit though? I have both 21 and 15. 21 works great with the 5" bp, but it would be totally killer if it would go 5100opm like the 15. Shinemate 21 goes to same opm as their 15.
The delta doesn’t pick up on camera much. Should have used a decibel meter to measure before and after. Also, I would probably run a synthetic grease.

Scott. Is everything OK? Haven't seen a video in a while.
My suggestion is to use super lube as is the best for polishers and controls heat much better than lithium grease. Rupes recommends only super lube

Hi Scott, are you going to test the new Harbor Freight Hercules forced rotation polisher? Looks like it just came out a couple of days ago.
I'll check it out! Thanks.
Which DA polisher size (backing plate) is the most versatile for DIY detailers and weekend warriors?
5"
i have tried synethic lithium grease top 1, then tried american white lithium grease, the synthetic lithium was much quieter
You should really only use super lube on those gears
Scott, do you know anything about putting a 5 inch backing plate on the Milwaukee cordless 21mm polisher?
21 mm is a beast but the 15 mm is just plain easier to handle
Scott, how have you found the 15”? Enough battery life and power (with swapping of course) to correct a full car?
After you put the grease and tested it without the backing plate, it vibrates pretty crazy and then after putting the backing plate it goes away for the most part right ?

Hope all is well I see you haven't posted in a while.
Great video! Do you have a smaller backing plate on the 15? And if so where could I find that?
The 21mm comes with a 6in backing plate & the 15mm comes with a 5in backing plate.
Backing plates are not interchangeable on these polishers at all
