As a 222 player, by the time the Churchill AVRE fires; I would've made coffee, drank it, watch the morning weather, go to the grocery store, pick up groceries, drive back, hop back on War Thunder, see the shell still coming towards me, turn my armored car around and sidestep the shell.

you can change how fast the scroll wheel changes the distance in controls (mouse wheel multiplier), but you can also bind increasing and decreasing the distance as well as resetting it instantly back to zero to keys on your keyboard (sight distance control: increase value, decrease value, reset axis value), since you can set the speed at which holding a key changes the distance (sight distance control: relative control sensitivity and multiplier) and the instant reset is even more useful, although obviously you still have to wait for the gun itself to depress.
Bright side, if you are stuck fighting around a building you can effectively prefire a corner so after they complete their 3rd lap of the block the shell will catch them off guard!
This tank is basically the War Thunder equivalent of a T-rex, its got a bite that can deal tremendous damage but its arm length is so short it can't reach
It would depend, if, and this is a massive IF, Gaijin added some more thematic missions, like some of Wargamming's special events, this could be useful. One example would be recreating the Dieppe raid, and having the UK/USA attacking points Germany/Italy are supposed to defend, with alternate flank routes being able to be opened by using enough explosives. Beyond that, this tank is way to dependent on getting close range maps like ruined city and Poland.
I mean, IRL the AVRE was able to knock out a panther from 3 meters away after hitting a telephone pole in front of it. so its kill radius should actually be quite a bit larger then it is in game. Ive also heard that its true maximum range was closer to 230m instead of the awful 100-150m that its got ingame, but ive heard varying accounts on that If it just had a range of damage that was larger than a pinhead then it may actually be worthwhile

I think this is one of the best things added in recent times. I have a 4.8 k/d ratio and consistent 8 kill games in it. Not only is it hilarious watching the round swoop in but it is extremely well armoured for 2.7

in real life, this tank wasnt suposed to engage in tank to tank combat, it was made for the Royal Engineers to blow up bunkers and obstacles. usually this thing carried around some much needed materials for the D day operations
It was mildly worse in real life, it has to be reloaded externally, as in a hatch opened in the hull roof and a guy flipped the barrel down to reload it by sticking his hands outside the tank with a huge HE round, this would not be so bad if the AVRE was not intended to attack fortifications full of machineguns or something. the US tested the Petard system and found it to be so unsatisfactory that it believed using a M12 Gun Motor Carriage was considerably safer for the anti-bunker role, and that says alot considering the M12 is a 155MM artillery piece with almost no armor, but it did not have to engage from sub machinegun range like the AVRE did.
@@deepbludreams I mean, yeah. Reloading was much worse irl but on the other hand, it was more meant to be an engineer vehicle - obstacle removal (any kind of obstacles). Basically: fire once, clear the road. If advancing bunkers etc.: fire, clear, smoke, reverse/give cover to infantry. Also it meant to be supported by Crocodiles or other vehicles (not just go on its own). But yeah, I think Brits didn't really like it either and that's why they've made things with 95mm howitzer or taking 105 Shermans. EDIT: I've allowed myself to dig into Churchills AVRE and Churchills in general, and as far as I can see, AVREs were doing pretty okay job with clearing things (bunkers etc) - mostly due to its armour. Can't read anything about anybody getting for example hit while reloading the AVRE even during the battle. Reloading was indeed pain in the ass, but if it works then works I guess.

I feel like this calls for playing the complete opposite, which is just the CV90120 for something with no armor but decent mobility, range and an AP round and is also importantly still a tracked vehicle rather than wheeled. Also i genuinelly believe that if the commander just pulled out a bazooka from the hatch, it'd be more effective than the actual mortar launcher it has.

Shots 1-5: Clearly missed. Shots 6-9: Missed due to overestimation (due to rangefinder). Shots 10-11: Very close, but overestimation and rangefinder make these reasonable misses. Shot 12: Likely didn't actually fire because he was already dead.
When using AVRE the key is to use the smoke grenades to advance to under 50m before engaging people. Firing at range is just a risk, its a slow rush ambush tank
I learned in the Sturmtiger that the crew voice that comes with the range finder is far more accurate for slow moving projectiles. Which can be bothersome if the radio chat is full with "attack the D point" messages. Or... if you don't speak the language.
You seem to have forgotten that this is a British vehicle, and thus Gaijin won't allow it to be even mildly functional, even as a premium with high explosive.
We talk about certain tanks in this game never being meant to fight other tanks, but this is the first one where that is true enough to affect gameplay.
Ah the AVRE. A beautiful rectangle of British Cast Iron/Suet Pudding composite armour (read: very thick and heavy), with essentially a giant spigot mortar on the front. It fires a dustbin full of HE, then is reloaded by the loader poking himself through the top driver hatch, breaking it like a shotgun, then stuffing a new bin into it
Spookston when he learns that he can, in fact, drive towards the enemy because hes in a Churchill and barrel stuff them instead of sitting still and rangefinding them: 🤯

I've grinded to 8.7 UK and I still uptier my TOG because it's the only British tank that can 1 shot MBTs
