I went to Best Buy and bought a deadcat for a larger microphone, cut a small piece off, double sided tape cut in a circle around the external mic, and stuck it on. BAM no more crazy distorted noise. Also its worth noting that GoPro's sound processing was turned off on this with no deadcat that's why the audio was so horrendus!
