    George needs a big lesson in how to speak with humility. I’m a coach. I would have told her buy food first, keep lights on, keep car going, keep clothes. THEN pay what you can towards credit cards. Stop using them! If you can’t afford to pay them then don’t! Let them sue you if they want but you’re on a fixed income. Good luck getting anything. Have some kindness in your voice George. I wish Dave took this call.

    Stop telling her to go back to work at 86 years old. She could rent out a room or rooms to a college or undergrad student. This is what a lady up in Massachusetts did and she is just fine. Her house was so big she could not afford the repairs and rented three rooms out to Grad students. The students really like her and checks in on her.

  • @erzabetf9544
    @erzabetf9544 6 месяцев назад +210

    The advice here is INSANE. It’s totally inappropriate for an 86 year-old woman. That existing credit card debt doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t. She doesn’t need to sell her house to pay it off. She needs to hold onto her house for dear life, as it’s protected under Florida law as her homestead. If she can get some help from her daughter, she can survive without increasing it. She should talk to a lawyer.
    Florida is full of lawyers who specialize in issues that impact seniors, and full of lawyers who will provide her with free legal services and help her develop an actual plan. Selling her house, moving into an apartment and getting a job are NOT the best options.
    And Ramsey Solutions should pull this video or add on to it to recommend that she seek professional help.

I don't get health insurance through Medicaid, but I am on another program where they pay my medication co-pay and other things.

Also, she could qualify for some other government assistance potentially or maybe some local charity solutions like Meals on Wheels to ensure she has food regularly. And its far from ideal, but even a reverse mortgage might be beneficial to someone in her dire situation. When you told her to go out and get a job I wanted to slap you through the screen.

Her situation isn't totally known, so she doesn't need judgement. She needs help surviving. She needs help getting connected to her local Senior Services through her county. She likely qualifies for many services at her age and with her health concerns. Services such as food stamps, home energy assistance, legal rights services, meals on wheels, homestead water rate discount, etc. There are senior housing programs too. Maybe she could be paired with a vetted roommate who will not only pay rent, but help around the house too. Before my mom passed, she qualified for many services through our local counsel on aging. My parents (divorced) were in similar situations, and I found out that they were overpaying for cellphone plans (not on senior discount options), cable plan had too many extras, internet was more than what they needed, there were cheaper insurance (auto) options available for them, etc. Not sure if this woman has any opportunities like this, but I think most would be surprised how viable finding $200/mo in cost optimization can actually be. She has so many options, but neither George or Jade know enough about life or money to see any of them.
    She could get a reverse mortgage. This is actually about the only situation where they make sense.
    She could sell the house and live with the daughter. May not be what she wants, but it's a solution.
    She could sell the house and say nets $170,000. Well $170,000/10 = $17,000 a year on top of her social security. So that would give her about $2,600 a month. By the time that runs out she's 96.
    Also, I didn't hear anything about food stamps or other gov't assistance. She should be eligible for a lot of help with food, utilities, etc.
    She shouldn't be reaching out to these idiots, she should get in touch with people who are real professionals.

      I agree with the reverse mortgage. She made a huge mistake not investing for retiement during her working years. The Ramsey folks I am sure wont bring up the reverse mortgage due to violation of their values.
      She needs to reach a deal with her daughter Reverse mortgage vs help me keep the house and take care of the extra $200 with the understanding the daughter gets the home after she passes.

      @@vickieclark5931 Dave is adamantly 100 % against reverse mortgages and he's right, they can be very tricky and leave the owner penniless and homeless. so we'll never see him recommend but at her age the risk is minimal unless the children won't accept the equity in the house being drawn down.

    Where is Dave when you need him?! Would George have spoken to his own mother that way? This is not some 20-something calling in. This woman is nearly 90, took the initiative to call into the show and has a positive net worth for crying out loud! No, her financial life isn't in perfect shape, but she should not have been talked down to by George the way she was!

Are you insane??!! Who cares if she has any debt she’s 86 years old let it go. Her Social Security will not be garnished at this age. I would tell her not to pay it. I’m going to write Dave about this. I’ve never done that. George should be fired! If not, I will no longer be watching this show because I will lose respect for Dave as well. This is just outrageous.
