    You taught me something I did not know. I'm fairly new to outboards. I have a 5HP Mercury (new) on my Solo Skiff. Still breaking it in. I did not realize that when the motor is in forward it disengages the lock and you can easily lift it into shallow water drive. I have been reaching back and lifting the lever plate to raise the motor a bit for shallow water. Don't have to. I just went and confirmed on my motor. This is great. Thanks very much.

      OK - found a trim adjustment. There's a three position pin adjustment on the cradle that the shaft seats on. Not too drastic, but I moved the pin aft, and trimmed the prop away from the transom a bit. It's not something you can do while in the water. Only three trim positions on the smaller hp models. I assume there's a reason? I also have a short shaft motor.

    • @Skinnyriver

      @whitehawkeFLA yeah I have a long shaft version. I bet the short shaft is limited because the water intake is higher when you tilt the trim. That’s probably the difference is the short shaft vs long shaft

      @@Skinnyriver not so important in fresh, but crucial in salt. I've seen motors ruined after their time in salt water, because of not flushing. New motors have more protection, but don't run an older motor in salt without flushing the same day.

    • @Skinnyriver
      @Skinnyriver  Год назад

      Thanks for confirming. Curious, when damage from salt water where does most of the damage occur on the motor. Does the corrosion simply start to eat through the cooling channels in the motor?

    • @FrankLadd
      @FrankLadd Год назад +2

      @@Skinnyriver When corrosion happens the metal oxides are often ten times the volume of the original metal so if the motor is old enough to have any raw matal on the inside is is very likely to get completely blocked in the cooling channels. Once water cannot flow, then you cannot flush it our with vinegar and dawn so it is ruined.

    I just ordered a Tohatsu 6 hp and will be running in skinny water (rapids). I'm going to raise the motor as much as I can with a 3" set back. This will also give it better performance. I will have to rig up a low water pickup. I'm thinking of a 90 degree tube facing forward. Hopefully, I'll have enough clearance in front of the prop. What think?

    • @Skinnyriver
      @Skinnyriver  Год назад

      Man that’s awesome, I don’t have a lot of experience with low water pickups or low water nose cones they put on the higher performance motors, but it sounds like it will work really well. I’d just pay attention to clearance and if the tube causes any turbulence in front of the prop (ventilation). But it sounds like a awesome setup. If you really get into the shallow water fun, Tohatsu has a 6hp jet drive outboard that’s made for that kind of stuff. That might be my next motor!
