My legal docs, my sunscreen (it's a convertible!!), my ipod that's connected to my aftermarket radio w/ 7" screen, my phone charger, & a small rag to wipe down any spills. Does a f'n glove box really weigh that much? Plus, tune the engine of the NC for $250 and you can get 182 hp out of it.
+AutoGuide.com can anyone at AutoGuide please explain why you think torque is measured in pound "feet"? you sound like idiots.. its not "horses power" at the engine and it's not "pound feet" at the wheels.. can someone please explain what you think torque is ?
LOVED this video and comparison. Short but sweet and fun to watch. Thanks for doing it! (P.S. - I'm a proud new owner of a 2016 GT model, and it's my FIFTH Miata. I've had two NB's and two NC's. I have never loved a car more than this one. It is an absolute blast.)
Aesthetically I prefer the older model. Design wise it looked more resolved. The new one with the sharp angles at the front just doesn't look like a harmonious design. The older model also looked squat and chunky where as the new one looks kinda weedy, especially with its skinny pram like wheels.
+/Dream Car Garage 1 (DCG1) I agree it kind of lost connection with previous models, especially in the rear which was in my oppionion beautiful. However... i do like the new car
Agree to some extent. Don’t like skinny wheels on new one but overall is just a totally different car. I see it as a mini late 60s Corvette. I think they copied the vintage corvette lines
Couldn't find a 2015 mX-5 Club with the soft top for this? That would have been the most sensible comparison. The new ND is nice looking on the outside but it has a stupid tablet glued to the dash, electric steering, and push button start. Save some money and go for the NC.
People, the so called car guys need to STOP looking at peak power figures. Peak power means NOTHING in the real world. That's why the new Miata beats the old one and also the 86/BRZ. Torque curve people - learn about fucking torque curve before saying anything about power
+Bruno Danese The torque curve is nice and fat at all rpm ranges. Same reason why a fiesta ST is so fast with only 194 hp. I'm sure they could bump top end power in future models, but it really isn't needed
+Bruno Danese That's not exactly true. Look at the new FRS/BRZ and Fiesta ST. They have almost identical power, yet the Fiesta ST realistically has about 80ft/lbs of torque more. They feel completely different when driving, yet, when you run down he drag strip they are side by side with essentially equal times and mph.
That's exactly what I mean. The torque curve on the BRZ must be better than the Fiesta. More torque does not mean anything if it's just peak torque at a very low rpm. High torque at low rpm is great for city driving, but bad for drag strips.
Bruno Danese I think anyone who's driven both cars would argue the torque curve on the Fiesta is much better...but what is actually true is its power curve is better. The Fiesta makes a lot of low end torque and then slowly lowers boost so the torque dies off...which gives it an unusually flat power curve. The BRZ/FRS build in torque (except for a dip in the middle of the powerband) and feel much more peaky.
Power = torque X rpm Power curve is directly related to torque curve. That's why engineers only talk about torque curve. If a car has a flat power curve then its peak torque is at low rpm snd it drops from there - pretty bad for drag racing, great fir city driving.
I was gonna say too... on the lap times... the GT PRHD doesn't have the same go-fast bits as the Club right? (or, am I wrong). Ha doesn't matter too much to me I supercharged mine... Go Cosworth! :)
@@splatbubble yes, it has the same LSD and sport suspension as my 2015 Club PRHT. It just has extras on top like leather seats, heated seats, and the Bose stereo. having driven both, the old ones steering feel is definitely better, at first i couldn't figure out why the nd didn't feel right to me but after driving it more and more its deff the steering feel that throws it off
I test drove the new 2016 Miata with Brembo brakes, etc. Really like it but the steering. While it's still as precise as my 2013 GT Miata, is too light for my taste. The old hydraulic system gives you more road feeling.
All well and good, but I think the Mk3 looks better all around. More mature and balanced, for instance the dual exhaust. Personally, if it's tech I'm after, I'd get the 2015 and upgrade the stereo to a nav unit. Great car, but I'd personally still go for the Mk3. Was just about to make that suggestion. Would love to see a comparison of the two. I'm a current S2000 owner but the ND MX-5 has had my attention for a while now
+AutoGuide.com Yeah, that would be interesting. Comparing to the S 2000 my current NB 10.Anni is better on the brakes . Lets see how the new ND can compete !
I'd speculate that the new ND is going to be easier to handle than the S2k. It's a good 500 lbs lighter and easier to control at its limits than the S2000. Whether its limits are as high as the S2000s, let's wait for AutoGuide.com to make a review and show us.
+Alan Barrese that might be the case but the power difference is so big the mx5 will still be left behind. mx5 155hp from a 2.0l, honda 240hp from a 2.0l

I have an nc1, 6 speed, lsd, strut tower brace, etc. I think the steering feel is excellent and question whether I would be equally satisfied with the steering feel in the ND. Any views from others on the comparative steering feel of the NC vs. ND would be appreciated.
As an NC owner who has looked at an ND, I can confirm that this is accurate. When anyone mentions interior storage, the elephant in the room with the ND is the glove compartment, most specifically the lack thereof. Yeah, the ND has no glove compartment. Plus one of the cubby holes is smaller and the cup holders are so far back that you have to slide forwards to access your drink. Think I'll stick with my old NC for the foreseeable future.

By the way its about the smiles per miles it would not be hard to find any number of sport cars that will beat the MX5 in a drag race. It is about the balance feel and pure driving pleasure.
I never really noticed Miatas until the redesign in 2016. I am now a huge fan. I loved my ND and currently loving my NA. The NC just doesn't appeal to me.
nc miata sport version only comes with 5 speed which is slower than the 6 speed model, and the 6 speed model has a lsd which makes it goes faster than the sport version with wield diff, the conclusion is they didnt do their homework before making this video

I want to like the new Miata but the lack of power is too much. The main reason it accelerates faster is because of extreme gearing. Honda made 200 HP 2 liter motors 14 years ago, so why can't Mazda do it now?
inferno14u It's not necessary. Once you add more power than you need to add stronger wheel bearings, stronger differential etc and you end up with a "heavy" S2000.
+TassieLorenzo I would rather have a robust car that is capable of handling more power than a car where they are trying to save every ounce and using trickery like extreme gearing and extra body roll to make it "feel" more fun.
+Den V. I'm not asking for big hp...I'm asking for an adequate amount. There is no real reason that we shouldn't expect more hp and no real reason they couldn't have done it except they were cutting costs and using an existing engine.
inferno14u Well that's what an MX5 is about though.... For high hp you could get a 370Z... they put absolutely no effort into saving ounces on that one. :/
+TassieLorenzo the Miata is supposed to be about driving, and it is true that horsepower isn't everything, but the fact that they have it so under powered and use extreme gearing to cover it up is depressing. They picked that motor to save money period. The fact that they purposely allow an amount of body roll so it "feels" more fun instead of making it planted is disappointing.
+Mike Schlee The only time I really enjoy driving them is in the snow. Found them rather numb and boring otherwise. The best car I ever owned was a 87 325ES in flawless condition. With some Ipikes on it I could slide through snow 2ft deep. Dang I miss that car:-/
I have an 06 BMW 330ci ZHP vert right now and have been a german car fan for a long time but for once I want a japanese car. I wish BMW would make a car like this for a similar price ( M235i) but thats nearly $20k more in base price, OK I'm sure i may have more fun with it but the new Miata is so great looking inside and out, plus I've always been about the driving experience VS raw power.
+John Stramiello Nope, not so much fun with the BMW ... Its just too heavy. Everything is suffering from the enormous weight, tires, brakes, acceleration, fuel consumption . Buy additional used Miata and keep Your Beemer, they are reliable no problems with old ones.
+WarmSoftKitty but the lightest one is apx. 300 kg ( equev. my Yamaha R1 including me and fuel ) heavier as the new Miata. Drive it, I did, I am german, comparing to Miata it is driving lika a family carrier with its uneven weight distribution. And twice the price ...
Who the f..k cares about a glove box, well I do. They ditched the storage in the doors so the only accessible storage whilst driving is behind you between the seats, but this is unusable if you happen to have a water bottle in the cup holder. The past 2 years I have taken my Mk3.75 to the continent on long drives, I'm sorry but a glove box is not only desirable it is essential. Going to Scandinavia next year for a month and guess what, my glove box will be full!!!! I will be keeping my current model for a few years and hopefully by that time Mazda will have woken up to who buys their cars new. As someone else said, It's not all about speed.
The ND miata has less hp but feels so much quicker. Its amazing what the skyactiv can do. And ive recently added a straight through muffler and it freed up even more top end power.
Yeah, and you can actually drive it for longer than 90 minutes without needing to get of it like your s2000. But comfort is overrated right? As long as we 'look' like we're having fun.
I was lucky enough to have the Mazdaspeed Miata as my first Miata. Then I got to trade it in and get an ND1 Club. I think the ND is the better car, but that Mazdaspeed was special.
Hey Stefan, we didn't time them during the runs, but with a good launch I'd say low six second range. With a clutch abusing launch, getting it under six seconds could happen.
Whats the 0-60mph on the miata? I have a 2006 and I can do 6.8s 0-60 with top down.. I can probably do better if I lost the passenger and closed to roof. This is with running premium fuel ofcourse and added lucas octane booster.
I HAVE A QUESTION PLS ANSWER/DISCUSS... So i recently went to a mazda dealer sat in (luckily) their only miata they had in stock(lowest trim) and i sat in it and i was bummed because i didn't fit ;( I'm like 6.4 and i was amazed because people are saying it should fit better than the nc but i sat in the NC and i fit in it just fine. The nc i sat in was a higher trim(phrt) but it fit me similarly to the brz. does trim difference give more space in 2016 miata?
In the market for an mx5 and not sure whether to go for third or forth generation. The problem is I don't like soft-tops really, so I'd be going for a hardtop... but the fourth gen hardtop is the retractable fasttop and not a full convertible like the third gen which puts me off, as I'd like the top to go fully down... but the interior is so much nice. Decisions decisions...
Mike, could you specify the 0-60 time of the new miata? The point is, I've seen different figures on the internet, from about 6 seconds to 7,5 seconds. I've a feeling that slightly upwards on 7 seconds is reality. Your opinion?
It's hard to imagine that the ND is not at or near the best value in the new car market, right now. If you watch Dave Coleman's rollerskate video and savagegeese's on the lift review and drive the car for a while it becomes clear that Mazda cares deeply about every inch of this car. Cars twice the price are getting half the engineering. Plus, Mazda is going to sell 10,000 units per year in the US and with the shared engine I expect it to be cheap to keep this thing going for years to come.
lazarus mctasty never said I was going to buy one. I was wanted to know for the platform sake if turboing a miata had the same general effect as a Brz. I would assume so but just wanted some more insight. You could also buy a used miata a do the same thing.
Just Joshing well the frs vs miata is basically the si vs the tc both the miata and tc are considered girl cars the si and frs are more drivers cars also the brz/frs can get more power
You're less likely to need a turbo with the new Miatas because the powerband on the miata is superior to that of the FRS/BRZ. The miata doesn't have that "dead spot" around 4,000 RPM like the FRS/BRZ have. It's also a couple hundred pounds lighter and has better gearing. All this results in a pretty responsive and snappy car.
+Just Joshing It's too early to say at this point, as the aftermarket has just gotten their hands on the ND. I'm sure that Flyin' Miata is at work developing a turbo kit as we speak, but we won't know what the gains will be yet. Rumor also has it that the Fiat 124 variant of the ND will have a factory turbo. I also know that some ecu tuners have been getting good gains with the 2.0 Skyactiv. There are other tuners who are working on a 2.5 conversion.
2015 *2480* lbs 2016 *2332* lbs - 148lbs difference - until you add a heavier anti-sway bar to the 2016 so it doesn't roll over on it's side in every turn.
Okay, okay, okay. They weren't comparing the same trims. They tested a PRHT GT against a Club. They picked the heaviest, softest NC trim in the lineup and pit it against the most track-oriented trim in the ND lineup. It should have been soft top club vs soft top club. The ND still would have put down better numbers, but it's doing a disservice to the NC to present the granny model as if it's the most performance-oriented. That said, I've been daily-driving a 2007 MS-R (a very rare, essentially track-only trim) for over two years now, and I would trade it in a heartbeat for a GT.
NC more power, but more weight (heaviest model I believe) ND Less power, but less weight by 261 lbs. Now what I would very much like to see is a comparison between the 2016 ND MX-5 and the NC that was renesis swapped
There are open roads where You live ? We have no speed limit here ! My NB is going like hell, by far fast enough for german Autobahn and a dream on our curvy roads along countryside.
Well regardless of whatever statistics or this that or the other thing that happens if you got a Mazda Miata you must be having fun don't sweat the details.
I'm in the UK MX5 owners club and to be honest we don't compare models we just drive them they all are great fun.

inferno14u It's not necessary.
Next review. G37s vs q50s. Thanks
I'll take it! Drove it yesterday and loveeeee it! Now time to order some good snow tires lol
MX-5s are great to drive in the winter. I miss driving my 1990 in the snow.
+Mike Schlee The only time I really enjoy driving them is in the snow. Found them rather numb and boring otherwise. The best car I ever owned was a 87 325ES in flawless condition. With some Ipikes on it I could slide through snow 2ft deep. Dang I miss that car:-/
I have a 2015 club rht. Love it. Never drove a 2016
I have an 06 BMW 330ci ZHP vert right now and have been a german car fan for a long time but for once I want a japanese car. I wish BMW would make a car like this for a similar price ( M235i) but thats nearly $20k more in base price, OK I'm sure i may have more fun with it but the new Miata is so great looking inside and out, plus I've always been about the driving experience VS raw power.
WarmSoftKitty meh
+John Stramiello Nope, not so much fun with the BMW ... Its just too heavy. Everything is suffering from the enormous weight, tires, brakes, acceleration, fuel consumption . Buy additional used Miata and keep Your Beemer, they are reliable no problems with old ones.
+WarmSoftKitty 1250 kg ... 1415 kg it is just a Limousine with an other body. 2 of them are as heavy as 3 MX5 !
+John Stramiello i sold my mx5 sport for a 3.0L z4 as the mx5 might handle better but on the open road the performance was embarrassing!!
those baggy jeans are straight out of the nineties
why not club vs club? !?
very thorough review man. two thumbs up!!
The drag race was odd to me because my NC beats every ND I run against. Lol
I'll take my NC over the ND any day.
I love the older with soft top one better, don't care if its slow
The ND miata has less hp but feels so much quicker. Its amazing what the skyactiv can do. And ive recently added a straight through muffler and it freed up even more top end power.
Old comment I know.. but I think it’s faster just bc it’s lighter
But this is a sports car, so who gives a fuck HAHAHA
I lol'd so hardly 😅
I really like the brz/fr-s and I'm hoping that Toyota/Subaru see this as motivation to improve their car. New Miatas are looking good
as an s2000 owner. the new nd mx5 looks amazing.
Yeah, and you can actually drive it for longer than 90 minutes without needing to get of it like your s2000. But comfort is overrated right? As long as we 'look' like we're having fun.
but this is a sports car so who gives a F,my favorite part!!!
+Mike Schlee mazda say 0-62 is 7.3 dont no how you're gona shave off over a second?
That's an very conservative number from Mazda. Look up some publications that have instrument tested the new car. A lot are in the low sixes.
Blind spot in a two seater? My 2013 which is the same as the 2015 takes very little effort to close the top with one arm unless you’re a weakling.
why would you waste time comparing the 2015 PRHT to a 2016? disregarding this whole video. Find a soft-top NC.
Did you watch the video where they showed the third 5 speed soft top? lol.
MichaelCoolGuy86 and compare club models... not the grand touring
And the drink holders are way back here. But this is a sports car so who gives a fuck. Subscribed.
Whats the 0-60mph on the miata? I have a 2006 and I can do 6.8s 0-60 with top down.. I can probably do better if I lost the passenger and closed to roof. This is with running premium fuel ofcourse and added lucas octane booster.
If you don't like the ND style... Get a Fiat 124 Spider. Done.
1 Miata
2 Miata
Red Miata
Blue Miata
I HAVE A QUESTION PLS ANSWER/DISCUSS... So i recently went to a mazda dealer sat in (luckily) their only miata they had in stock(lowest trim) and i sat in it and i was bummed because i didn't fit ;( I'm like 6.4 and i was amazed because people are saying it should fit better than the nc but i sat in the NC and i fit in it just fine. The nc i sat in was a higher trim(phrt) but it fit me similarly to the brz. does trim difference give more space in 2016 miata?
Quick question, will I be able to fit in the new MX-5? I'm 193cm's tall.
+Maan Salha It would be tight with the roof up. Our 6'4" videographer had some issues fitting in.
I believe 193cm's is 6.35ft. Thank you for responding so quickly. =D
+Maan Salha no, 1,90 is the limit. I just ordered a new ND, just fit in and I am 1,88 ...
+Maan Salha I´m just as tall as you, I fit in. Don´t listen to the lower people, haha!
+Maan Salha go test drive one
Great review and comparison...good job!!
A real man's car...
Why Mazda don't make a Coupe of MX-5?
Sener S bc it won’t be a MX-5
Sener S There was a NB Coupe but only in Japan and very few units made
The 2016 looks better on the in and outside!
So what did you end Buying?
Where is the AutoGuide test track? Cayuga?
Great review!
I have the NC sport. It should be in par with the New ND on drag races. You guys should line up again and change driver.
I think the timing belt is off on your spec sheet logo :P
Your head to head with the 370z and genesis coupe led me here.
I take that back. I was looking at it backward. So i guess my timing eyes were wrong lol.
To the miata aficionados, would slapping a turbo or supercharger to one of these cars have the same lively feeling as doing the same to an frs or Brz?
Just Joshing
so youre gonna spend 30k+
when you could buy a frs and turbo it for that price
lazarus mctasty never said I was going to buy one. I was wanted to know for the platform sake if turboing a miata had the same general effect as a Brz. I would assume so but just wanted some more insight. You could also buy a used miata a do the same thing.
Just Joshing well the frs vs miata is basically the si vs the tc
both the miata and tc are considered girl cars
the si and frs are more drivers cars
also the brz/frs can get more power
2015 *2480* lbs
2016 *2332* lbs - 148lbs difference - until you add a heavier anti-sway bar to the 2016 so it doesn't roll over on it's side in every turn.
Nicely done, guys! Really was looking for something like that. :-)
Are they making hard top anytime soon for 2016?
Will a tuned 2016 or 2015 be faster and more fun?
Firstly the boot isn't any smaller, it equals to the same size, and the cabin is slightly bigger in the new one for taller people....
Wrong tire breath. The 'Boot' in the NC is quite large when compared to the ND.
Oh yeah, MX-5 owner. ND.1 just do it👍👍👍 Good review👍👍👍😎😎😎
I just have a problem with the acceleration test, the two must go in miata nc huge puddle which is a disadvantage
Totally agree with the brother's comment.
I follow your adviceI bought 2 Miata 👍
NC more power, but more weight (heaviest model I believe)
ND Less power, but less weight by 261 lbs.
Now what I would very much like to see is a comparison between the 2016 ND MX-5 and the NC that was renesis swapped
Miata MX 5 NC design far superior.
closing the soft top looked identical lol
I'm not trading in my NC Club for a ND but I'll consider it if there's a Mazdaspeed variant on the horizon. That's dreaming of course.
previous gen looks better
damn right
damn right
nope lol
I agree
serious?
There are open roads where You live ? We have no speed limit here ! My NB is going like hell, by far fast enough for german Autobahn and a dream on our curvy roads along countryside.
You peak power is just a number. The newer car is said to have more power over a wider range than the old.
Well regardless of whatever statistics or this that or the other thing that happens if you got a Mazda Miata you must be having fun don't sweat the details.
Rotary Turbo Miata?! Dreammmm
+Vaioleto 3 Rotor RE 20 B would be nice: 1. gear 100 kmh ( apx.80 miles/h ) like motorbike.
Didn't Mazda say they were done producing the rotary engine?
+Ivan Koshy They can be forced to put Rotary into new Miata - with money. Renisis would be enough, 3 Rotor would be awesome ...
And your wrong about the drop top. NC mx5’s come down like the Nd. It’s the main and nb that took longer. NC is the same as Nd.
