What does it mean to live in a surveillance state? Fault Lines investigates the fallout over the NSA’s mass data collection programs by speaking to the people at the center of the story, including journalist Glenn Greenwald and NSA director Keith Alexander.
Greenwald tells Fault Lines how he got the Snowden documents, what the main revelations are, and why people should care. We also speak with William Binney, an NSA whistleblower who tells us the main turning point was 9/11, when the NSA vastly expanded its programs and began collecting the data of Americans, not just foreigners as they had been before.
After 9/11, surveillance also became more pervasive at the local level. We decided to speak to a group of people who definitely know their being spied on. In New York, the NYPD began a program with the help of two former CIA officials, to surveil Muslim life at all levels: mosques, cafes, infiltrating organizations and student groups etc. We speak to a young Muslim student who talks about what it feels like to be under constant surveillance then meet Linda Sarsour, the executive director of a local community organization called the Arab American Association of NY. The NYPD had a plan to infiltrate the board of AAANY, a center that caters to immigrant women, children, etc. She tells us what the implications of the program is for the local Muslim community and discusses the effects. We also speak to law professor Ramzi Kassem who analyzes these policies as well as a psychologist who discusses the psychological effects of mass surveillance.
Finally, we come to Washington DC, where the NSA program is being debated in the halls of Congress. We attend hearings on the hill, where General Keith Alexander and Director James Clapper are being questioned, we hear from members of Congress from across the political spectrum about it and we even get a chance to ask General Alexander questions ourselves.

When people tell me they have nothing to hide, I ask them for their wallet, social security number, bank account numbers, etc., and just like Glen, no one has ever taken me up on it.

Maybe they feel they have to watch everybody because they feel guilt about what they're doing in other countries. And that guilt breeds fear of retaliation

Great Job! But Linda Sarsour is a threat and should be dealt with that way...the rest of the people I clearly feel sorry for beeing under surveillance but with her it clearly is a safty issue and she is not just helping students with their homework she is actually promoting sharia, violance and oppression not even in a peaceful way that would make her a surveillance victim more the way that promotes actual terrorism

IDC about their surveillance, but when you try to put bullshit and lies into the lives of others, pretending those are the truth, then there are going to be problems.
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has them. Those so called "victimless crimes" are excellent examples. FTS
For instance.... Ticketing or arresting someone for walking down the road smoking a joint, Hiking a mountain and charging them with posession, Etc..
My choices that I make for myself, what I smoke or do, as long as it only affects myself, are mine to make. You have NO right to tell me otherwise, just because you were brainwashed to believe differently with the opinions of those that pretend your best interests are their decisions to make. Especially when many of them are to undereducated to do many tasks for themselves.
Half of the politicians out there couldn't fix their own car if they had to.
The other half couldn't fix a broken hot water tank if they needed to.
Much less know how to deal with the items they know nothing about (like effects of marijuana, FROM EXPERIENCE) to be making that decision for anyone, much less to have it classified.
These same idiots are also the ones writing your state and federal budgets....Managing your retirements....
Oh we were talking about surveillance.....lol
